The FBI Report Father Bob Irish, Pastor 669-8335 ext. 11 [email protected]

Next Sunday’s Scriptures: A reflection on the readings for Mass next Sunday, November 25.

Jesus, King of heaven and earth, cares for all his people and calls us to love and serve him in return. This final Sunday in Ordinary time is marked as the Feast of Christ the King. Jesus, our King, has all power in heaven and earth. The Church represents the kingdom on earth. We, as members of that kingdom, are expected to follow the example of Jesus. He rules with love, service and compassion, and calls us to do the same. All of today’s readings address the idea of kingship. Daniel’s, 7:13-14, vision sees the king in everlasting glory being served by all nations. The second reading, Revelation 1:5-8, names the King as Jesus Christ and affirms his reign as absolute and everlasting. John’s Gospel, 18:33b-37, relays the exchange between Jesus and Pilate before his crucifixion, where Jesus confirms his kingdom is not of this world.

Reflection on this weeks reading! We are called the Catholic Community of St. Jude and our Mission Statement that appears on the front of this bulletin and our website says this about whom we are, whom we strive to be and whom we hope others will see us as.

We, the people of the

Catholic Community of St. Jude, are followers of Christ, striving to live the Gospel and reflect the compassion and

love of Jesus to all people.

What word or phrase stands out for you when you think of why you are a member here? What do you hope to receive from this family of faith? What are you willing to do with the skills God has endowed you with? How are you, personally and collectively as a family, reflecting the compassion and love of Jesus to others? How are you contributing to build up the Kingdom of God in our faith community?

These questions are good food for thought and reflection as we enter the season of holidays and holy days that begin with Thanksgiving this coming Thursday. A day for us to join together, at 9:00AM, in prayers & with songs of thanksgiving to our God for the many gifts and skills he has given us.

When we give thanks, we bring to mind God’s gifts to us. This, in turn, reminds us of God’s gracious nature. We think, not just of what God has done, but also of who God is. Thus, giving thanks is a point of entry to praise. In the language of Psalm 100, we “...enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His Name.” There’s no biblical rule that states that thanks must always come before praise. But, for many of us, thanksgiving for what God has done leads us to praise God for whom he is.

To be thankful (from the Greek Eucharistia) is a profound biblical reality and practice: “O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good….” This is just as dominant a theme in the New Testament as in the Old: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth….” This brings to mind just how thoroughly we stress the role of thanksgiving in our lives as Christians. May we follow these words of advice from Saint Mother Teresa:

“Be thankful for small things, it is in them that your strength lies.”

Tapping the Faith

This wonderful event is open to people of all ages! Join us this Tuesday, November 20, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at Reno’s North for a Tapping the Faith special event! Based on the favorite debate game of our high school Rooted Youth Group, we will be having a night filled with rounds of “Sin or No Sin.” In this game, we will explore our own convictions on what is right or wrong, debate them, and then find out whether they are truly sinful actions. This evening will prove to be entertaining and informative! Come, have some delicious food, share beverages, chat with friends, and learn more about our Faith!

Happy Thanksgiving!!! I pray that all of you enjoy a family filled and faith filled Thanksgiving, recalling wonderful memories of past Thanksgiving celebrations along with creating memories for future Thanksgiving celebrations. This past Wednesday we heard about the cleansing of the 10 lepers with just one of them returning to give thanks to God (Luke 17:11-19). In Fr. Bob’s homily, he reminded us of the importance of thanking God for all of the blessings in our lives. I don’t know about you, but I could sure use some work on that. When I am experiencing trials and challenges I have no problem voicing my frustration and unhappiness but when I experience the everyday miracles of normal existence, I tend to take it for granted and believe that this is the way it is supposed to be. I lose sight of the fact that everything I have is a blessing from God! The basic essentials like shelter, food, water, clothing, good health and peace are expectations of mine even though there are people right here in our own community who are lacking in one or many of these blessings. How often do I thank God for my blessings in prayer, and also realize that I am called to share my blessings with others. They are not only for me. This fact was driven home on Thursday when a few of us travelled to St. Francis Prayer Center in Flint to provide Thanksgiving food baskets and assisted with our own Thanksgiving food basket donations. In both cases I paused to thank God for all of you and your willingness to give thanks by offering to share the blessings you have experienced with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Our parish is blessed to have so many of you willing to give thanks to God by giving of yourselves to others. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!
