“The Christ-Pointing Game”

Michelle James, Associate Pastor

313-383-0100, ext. 16 - [email protected]

Wow! This election cycle has been like no other, and if you’re like me, regardless of who you’re backing (or backing away from!), you’re tired of it! But there’s one thing this election has taught me – we can’t focus on what’s important when we behave as we have seen our political candidates for President, and many of our media talking heads.

I’m glad to be able to turn off the TV in order to escape the political mudslinging! But we can’t escape it for long, can we? It’s just about everywhere we turn, and sometimes, we see iterations of the same in our own workplaces, in our families, schools, and even in our church.

As followers of Christ, we are not to back away from or turn our backs on the political sphere, nor the social or financial realm, but rather, to influence them in the ways of justice and peace as Jesus teaches us. No matter our political affiliation, our social connections, or our financial influence, all of it should point to Christ. And make no mistake, as soon as we affix the name “Christian” to ourselves, we automatically point to Christ. We need to ask ourselves what kind of pointer we are.

Before we make a keystroke or utter a word, we should ask how our actions or words glorify God and build up Christ’s body here on earth – in our workplaces, our schools, our homes, and especially in our churches. Let us

Allen Park Presbyterians be found guilty of love-slinging and kindness-calling, working to outdo one another in compassion.

This past Sunday was our Presbyterian Women’s Mission Sunday. We heard about a lot of ways church and social agencies are working to spread God’s love and compassion in the most difficult circumstances, multiplying God’s hands and feet in our world. These are the important things we need to be focusing on as the church, the followers of Christ – making God’s love palpable. In this, God is glorified.

At the Third Service this same Sunday, Kerri Van handed out a 10/10/10 flyer – 10 things we can do to help – daily, weekly, monthly…. Some of them are easy, some are more difficult. Some will require assistance, but that’s how the body is strengthened, isn’t it. The more we work together, the more work we accomplish, and the happier our world is.

So this political cycle, this financial period, this time in our life together, let’s focus on something important. Let’s start slinging some love and compassion and see how many people we can hit!

Go ahead…I dare you. I double-dog dare you, you Christian…you Christ-pointer, you!

Tag. You’re it! And…go!

May blessings abound through you today and all month long!

Session Synopsis (October 11, 2016)

Judith Ouellette, Clerk of Session

Committee Reports

Report from Trustees: We learned of some concerns from our insurance carrier regarding our property. These safety issues are being addressed. The exterior door refinishing project is now complete. We hope to be closing on the sale of the Cleveland Street manse. Report from Associate Pastor: Rev. James will be attending the Presbyterian Pilgrimage Nov. 10-13. A church family restaurant day fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, November 1 at Secret Recipes Family Dining in support of our high school mission trip. The youth group will also be selling Yankee Candles which have a nice return on the investment and make great gifts Report from Interim Pastor: Rev. Faile will be at Camp Wakanda for the family fall color camp (October 14-16) Report from Presbytery Meeting: Leadership training session will take place on January 28. Pat McBride is the new Accountant for the Detroit Presbytery. Budget and Finance: The committee is hard at work formulating a budget to present to the session at the November meeting.

Public Worship and Music: The Masquerade Ball will take place on Friday, October 28 (supports P.O.R.T.) and the Ford Chorus will present a concert on December 9 (General Fund). Stewardship: A mailing will take place on October 26. All members and friends are asked to return their pledge commitment and “talents” cards before November 13. Please be sure to attend the Fall Harvest Stewardship Luncheon on that date. Let us celebrate in joy all that God has given us. Technology: Investigating setting up Wi-Fi in the Fellowship Building dependent on the cost. This would greatly benefit the groups that use the building and attract others to use/rent the space. Planning and Vision: Reviewed first three pages of New Beginnings reports, discussed points on assessment of New Beginnings. Reviewed comments made in small group meetings. Discussed our mission statement. Think and pray about this and bring back ideas next meeting.

New Beginnings Report

A brief report on the New Beginnings Assessment conducted in 2015. We have been considering methods for making the full report accessible to whomever would be interested in reading it. Further discussions will be conducted by the officers and congregation in preparation for the search for a new Pastor.

Synopsis of the New Beginnings

Assessment and Meetings

The New Beginnings Assessment was conducted at Allen Park Presbyterian Church during 2015. It was based on a comprehensive report (80 pages) prepared by Rev. InHo Kim after his on-site review of our church and our community.

The report was evaluated and discussed by approximately 100 of our congregants at a series of six small group meetings (eight different groups) in the third quarter of 2015. A brief consensus of these small groups follows.

We identified the strengths of our church: Worship Missions/ministries (youth programs, camp,

music, internal senior programs, medical equipment outreach, handicapped accessibility

Physical facilities (local campus, camp, transportation)

History in the community

We identified the weaknesses: Finances Limited congregational involvement Personal objectives Declining membership and low average

worship attendance; no follow-up program for non-active members

Leadership Other observations based on the Assessment

and the discussions of the small groups: Changes in our community have not been

reflected in our missions and our outreach. We are an aging congregation and remain somewhat ignorant of the needs and realities in our community. Options for the future of our church were discussed and the form of a “Mission Redefinition” was agreed upon. Elements of this approach include better knowing our community, improving communications (internal and external), being realistic about our resources, embracing change, establish “out-reach” ministries, and, as much as possible, either improving our finances or reducing the extent of our existing ministries and expenses.

*Canned Fruit Noodles *Spaghetti Sauce *Spaghetti Noodles Boxed Milk Powered Milk

* denotes more immediate needs.

SCOUTING REPORT:

Troop 1051

Andy Johnson, Assistant Scoutmaster,

Troop 1051 - 313-717-8756

Email: [email protected]

The troop, along with APPW’s new Girl Scout Cadet/ Senior Troop, spent Oct. 14-16 camping at D-bar-A Scout Ranch and haunting visitors that attended the annual Haunted Forest and Family Fun Zone. The Family Fun Zone was full of games and prizes, a magic show, bounce house, tractor hay rides and concessions. They boys and girls setup on the ¾ mile haunted walking trail ready to scare unsuspecting visitors. This is a tradition the troop participates in every year and is spearheaded by John Dam. The scouts are very thankful for all of Mr. Dam’s hard work. He spends hundreds of hours preparing for this event every year and begins setting up the area four to five days in advance. He donates his time, talents and many fun animatronics including a skeleton gatekeeper that opens and closes the gate for the guests.

November is Scouting for Food month. In the Boy Scout Promise, a boy scout

promises to help other people at all times. By participating in the Scouting for Food program, scouts come a step closer to fulfilling those words.

Across the country, in many councils and districts, thousands of troops and packs with millions of scouts involved collect tens of millions of pounds of food which is distributed to needy neighbors. The pack and troop will be distributing bags to homes with instructions, picking up the bags sitting on porches in our area on Saturday, November 12, and then will deliver their bounty back to the church. Their collections will be donated to the Deacons Food Pantry.

If you or a boy in 1st grade and up is interested, please come to a Monday night meeting in the Fellowship Building at APPC.

You are always welcome. You can also contact Asst. Scoutmaster Andrew Johnson at 313-717-8756 — [email protected].

The Haunted Forest at D-bar-A Scout Ranch in Metamora, MI consists of a non-scare area with a bounce house, face painting, games, and candy for younger children, and a 3/4 mile walking trail through the woods. Guests are transported to the start of the walking trail on hay wagons, and there is a separate one mile hay ride. There is a concession stand in the dining hall, and a magician that entertains guests while they are waiting in line. We are hoping to add a corn maze next year. The final numbers were not available, but there were over 400 staff and 1,000 guests went through in less than four hours!

It’s November, which also means it is time for the APPW Annual Holiday Extravaganza Craft Fair and Bake Sale. This will be our 26th year. I hope to see you there shopping and helping to support our bakers. The money earned supports the mission work of the ladies of APPC. I want to thank all of you that donated goodies last year and also those that purchased them. We had one of our best years in quite a while. I hope to do even better this year. Your donations are NEEDED! They can be dropped off “ready-to-sell” on Friday, November 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Building Please clearly mark on each bag or container if the item “contains nuts” or “contains peanuts.”

With several of our circles merging, we do not receive as many Door Prizes as we have in the past. We are asking for donations from the congregation to help. Gift cards are always a great donation for a door prize. They are also easy to mail to the winners. Our shoppers are always excited when their name is drawn for a prize and we get many great responses from them.

Second Mile Center of Detroit will be hosting the November PWPD Gathering. It will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd from 9:45 a.m. through lunch. This month’s program is Information and Resources to Prevent Gun Violence and will be presented by Rev. Barb McRae, Rev. Kevin Johnson and Pam Frucci of The Detroit Presbytery’s Gun Violence Prevention Work Group. Attendees are asked to please bring a nonperishable food item for the Second Mile Center Holiday Food Baskets. The items needed for each basket are:

1 box of elbow macaroni 2 cans cranberry sauce 1 large can of yams 1 box cake mix or brownie mix 1 container frosting 2 cans green beans or corn 1 box or bag white self-rising corn meal

For the purchase of perishable items, please issue a check payable to “PWPD” or “The Second Mile Center of Detroit,” or purchase gift cards from Kroger, Walmart or Target. The Thank Offering is received in the fall and we will be collecting and dedicating it at

the November Gathering. The theme for this year is “For it is God who is at work in you enabling you both to will and to work for [God’s] good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13, NRSV.

APPW’s next Gathering will be Tuesday, November 15th at 7 p.m. in the Parlor. This Gathering will be hosted by Dorcas-Rebekah, Miriam and Phoebe-Hannah Circles.

The program will be “Come Gather on Our Porch…Rest Awhile…and Chat.” There is always time to sit on the back porch and chat. Come share an evening with your church friends for good conversation...in the Parlor (our back porch).....rest awhile.....enjoy refreshments and reconnect with old and new friends.....guests always welcome! AND......Bring a memory to share.....here are some ideas of conversations we might bring and share:

An item handed down in your family with a back-story.

A photograph or picture that is meaningful and why.

A gift given to you that you treasure, maybe from your child or grandchild, family member or good friend.

A favorite book and why you like the message. Something you made...you gifted, received or kept

and why it gave you “warm fuzzies” An event you hosted or you attended that made

you smile.
