About Gordon Hayward:

Gordon has been designing gardens professionally from his home in southern Vermont since 1985 with particular emphasis on gardens in the Northeast, as well as the Eastern Shore of Maryland, though he does work nationwide.

He is a nationally recognized garden writer and lecturer. He wrote for Horticulture Magazine for 25 years and lectured with the magazine on nine multi-city lecture tours across America. He was a contributing editor at Fine Gardening Magazine for six years and a contributing editor at the newly revamped Organic Gardening Magazine. Gordon is the author of eleven books on garden design, two of which have won national awards.

Gordon Hayward: The Inevitable Garden

A garden with a soul, clarity, varied emotions and an (un)self-conscious design, (and a feeling of inevitability) comes out of the fusion of three key elements as they pass through the mind and emotions of the designers:

• The people who live in and care for the garden and whose style and life stories are embedded in the design.

• The style, layout, materials and history of the interior as well as exterior of the house and or buildings associated with the garden.

• The land, its features, its history and its light. Light and shadow illuminate everything.

This lecture gathers around images of fine European and American architecture, gardens and their makers. It also includes lessons learned from magnificent farms, vineyards and cattle ranches across Europe and America.

Join Peter Brace of Nantucket Walkabout and Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation for a two-hour guided walking tour of the flora found on the Linda Loring Nature Foundation property. Today he and his wife, author and founding chef of Nantucket’s Straight Wharf Restaurant, Marian, spend summers at their home in Shawkemo. There “he” grows and “she” cooks from a vast vegetable garden. Morash occasionally contributes columns in the I&M on gardening as well as monthly items for the magazine “Nantucket Today.”

Floral Arrangement Workshop with Mary Beth FerroTUESDAY, JULY 19 | 10-NOON | $80 | NANTUCKET LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL

In this two-hour, hands-on course, Floral Designer Mary Beth Ferro will share the fundamentals of floral design as well as priceless tips on how to prolong the life of arrangements. Beautiful fresh-cut flowers and a vase will be provided for each participant, as well as all the supplies needed to create a lovely take home centerpiece. Please find Mary Beth’s bio on page 19.

Botanical Printmaking Workshop with Bee ShayTUESDAY, JULY 19 | 1-4PM | $80 | 44 TENNESSEE AVENUE

Spend the afternoon in a spectacular Madaket garden with local artist Bee Shay, creating beautiful prints with leaves and flowers. After two hours of hands-on printing with water based inks and Asian papers, participants will learn how to turn their prints (and bits of prints gone rogue) into cards, gift tags and more. All participants will leave with their creations packed safely into a beautiful portfolio made just for this class, along with a booklet detailing the techniques covered in the workshop. Join Bee Shay for an inspiring day of creating art with materials found in a garden. Participants will print, weave and create botanical inspired art from materials collected in nature. Activities include: painting and printing with sticks, grasses and leaves, off-loom weaving, block printing with potatoes and more. Please find Bee’s bio on page 20. This is a drop-off class for children ages 7+.

A healthy snack and lunch will be provided. Please come with sunscreen and a hat. Children will be outdoors for the duration of the workshop.

Children ages 2 – 5 will learn what makes a garden grow and create their own mini edible gardens to take home. Class includes planting time (complete with worms) and story-time. Fairy Garden ContestMON, JULY 18 – FRI, JULY 22 | ALL DAY | FREE | FAIR STREET PARK

Fairy gardens are the sweetest, smallest and most enchanting of all gardens. Participants are invited to work alone or as a team to create and display a magical fairy realm.

If you are looking for inspiration, sign up for our Fairy Garden Building workshops offered on Tuesday, July 19th and Wednesday, July 20th. Children who participate in either workshop will be able to submit their creations, if desired.

All other participants should drop off and register their fairy gardens on Monday, July 18th between 8-5pm at the Fair Street Park. Prizes and pick up - Friday, July 22nd between 8-Noon.

Open to all ages. All sizes and types of vessels are welcome.

ALANA CULLEN

Alana’s childhood was filled with handmade dresses and patchwork quilts. She grew up alongside her crafty mother and hardworking father, making and gardening, with the sound of the sea as her mainstay. Today you’ll find her foraging plant materials for her textiles and collecting sea-worn shells for her jewelry with her children by her side. She leads the “Little Lighthouse” playgroup at the Nantucket Lighthouse School and sells handcrafted wares via her website, Tafari Designs, and at Sustainable Nantucket’s weekly Farmer’s Market.

PETER BRACE

Peter B. Brace is the author of “Nantucket: A Natural History” and “Walking Nantucket: A Walker’s Guide to Exploring Nantucket on Foot.” A Nantucketer for 23 years and counting, Peter formerly covered the environmental beat for the Nantucket Beacon and the Nantucket Independent. He is currently a freelance writer for Sound Magazine, the Nantucket Chronicle and the Nantucket Coastal Conservancy. Peter knows Nantucket’s natural environs from shoreline to shoreline, its multitudes of plant, mammal, bird, fish, insect and reptile/amphibian species.

KAITY FARRELL

Kaity Farrell is the creative force behind Fare Isle, a local handmade business, featuring organic and wildcrafted goods along with her flower art prints of the island. Kaity writes and shares her delicious plant-based recipes on the Fare Isle blog for all to enjoy. When she’s not making and cooking you can find her out adventuring around the island with her husband and their joyful young son, Iley.

SARAH TREANOR BOIS

Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD, is the Director of Research and Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF). Having first joined the conservation scene on Nantucket in 1998, Sarah has worked at or with most of the island’s non-profit conservation groups. Sarah received her PhD from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut where her research focused on invasive plant distributions in New England and efforts to prioritize species management. Sarah’s current position at LLNF marries her interests in research and education where she encourages people of all ages to participate in science and research at their own comfort level.

ILLYA KAGAN

MARY BETH FERRO

Mary Beth Ferro has been a part of the Nantucket Looms staff as early as 1984 when she started as a skilled handweaver under co-founder Andy Oates. Now an integral part of the Nantucket Looms Design Team, Mary Beth also runs a successful floral design service. She now designs flower arrangements for weekly private home installations, parties and weddings as well as weekly flower bouquets for purchase at Nantucket Looms. Mary Beth loves to add unique touches to her arrangements, regularly scouring estate sales and yard sales for vintage containers that make her designs truly one-of-a-kind.

NEIL FERGUSON

Neil Ferguson, born and raised in Hampshire, England, decided to become a chef at age 12. Missing a school trip because he was ill, he went on vacation to Scotland with his parents instead. As luck would have it, they took him to a restaurant run by British Chef Brian MacPhee. Neil was in awe and his fate was sealed. Neil spent time at the best restaurants in London- Le Gavroche, Claridges, Pied A Terre, La Tante Claire, The Square and Aubergine- taking from each a different skill-set and style. In 2006, Neil moved to the United States to open Gordon Ramsay at The London in New York. Shortly after, Neil was hired to open Allen & Delancey in the Lower East Side, which took Manhattan by storm. Neil was hired by Galley Beach in the summer of 2011 and was made Executive Chef in 2013. In 2015, he and his wife, Shelley, purchased American Seasons where he is now the owner and Executive Chef.

EVENT BIOS

Originally from Florida, Michelle found her way to Nantucket and very quickly fell in love with a little island 30 miles out to sea. She attended Ringling College of Art and Design and received a BFA in Illustration. She is a maker of dolls, portraits, cards and valentines, and unique toys, which she sells via her website Dancey Pants Disco and at Nantucket Bookworks. Michelle and her husband, Zak, have a son named Odin and they are expecting their second child this fall.

Renowned Nantucket artist Illya Kagan’s expressive paintings capture the essence of our landscape. He works on location “en plein air” throughout the seasons, painting the changing light in broad brush strokes that are the hallmark of his inimitable style. Working from the beautiful landscapes of the French West Indies to the Mountains of Colorado to his home on the Island of Nantucket, Illya paints diverse subjects that bring the viewer to feel his strong connection with the place.

KATIE HEMINGWAY

Katie Hemingway of Grass Roots Gardens has been gardening with color for over 15 years on Nantucket island. When she is not in the gardens or greenhouse she can be found at the beach, in the kitchen, or at her painting easel (usually painting gardens or flowers!) Katie lives on Nantucket year-round with her husband Dane and their four children

AMY PALLENBERG

Amy Pallenberg, owner of Amy Pallenberg Garden Design & Care, is a curator of beautiful spaces. She transforms the ordinary into verdant, high design, inspired spaces that are direct reflections of her customers’ style and desire. Design and cultivation of gardens, containers and interior floral arrangements are her specialty.

ALICIA KELLER

Alicia joined the Nantucket Lighthouse School faculty in 2004 and has been integral to the vibrant Small School program ever since. An accomplished weaver, cook, and avid boater, Alicia raised and home-schooled her two sons Carl and Noah here on Nantucket with her husband Carl Keller. Alicia has taught art education programs at NISDA, the Maria Mitchell Association, and the Nantucket Atheneum.

Julie has made landscaping her career focus since 1995. After apprenticing for a landscape designer, she returned to Nantucket and was hired as a head gardener for Nantucket Island Resorts where she managed the greenhouse operation as well as designing and maintaining gardens for all NIR properties.

Hither Creek Gardener was born in 2002, from Julie’s desire to work independently and in a manner consistent with her core values. “Cultivate beautiful spaces, but do no harm” is her working mantra. Julie completed the accredited NOFA organic Land Care program and is passionate about organic landscaping.

Kyle Zachary is the executive chef of TOPPER’S at The Wauwinet. A graduate of the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, he honed his skills in restaurants including Alinea in Chicago, Wheatleigh in Lenox, the Winnetu Inn on Martha’s Vineyard, and TOPPER’s as sous chef in 2005. Most recently Kyle was the sous chef at the Intercontinental in Dusseldorf, Germany. He returned to take the reigns at TOPPER’S in 2010. Kyle’s seasonally inspired cuisine at TOPPER’s has recently won critical acclaim from Forbes Travel Guide, Zagat, Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler and Saveur Magazine.

Bee Shay, a published author and island resident, specializes in the art of printing with nature. Although she has been known to practice “gyotaku” (the art of fish printing), her first passion is printing with botanicals. She uses these prints to make functional art as she believes that bringing beauty into everyday life is an essential way to live. She is currently serving as Executive Board President to an international group of printmakers. She has been a practicing artist and instructor since 1978.
