The Redesigned SAT Suite of Assessments: Understanding Scores and Reporting - University Union, Delta Room (3rd floor) With the redesigned PSAT/NMQST launching in October and the redesigned SAT in the spring of 2016, now is the time to get ready! This session will provide an update on the key changes to the exams and the tools available to help prepare you and your students. 1.B. Dipping Beneath the Surface: College Application Essays In the Land of Selfies - University Union, Summit Room (3rd floor)

This session will cover a combination of both cost-reduction strategies and tips for increasing the chances of winning private scholarships that can effectively reduce a family's out-of-pocket college costs by tens of thousands of dollars. Students often struggle to write college application essays that provide unique insights into what they offer college campuses. From both sides of the admissions desk, we will share strategies to help applicants understand the purpose of the essays and learn about themselves in the brainstorming, writing, and editing processes. 1.C. Understanding WUE and Creating Out of State Options for Students – University Union, Orchard I (2nd floor)

The goal of this session is to educate the audience on the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program (WUE). The presentation will cover the history of WUE as well as how WUE is utilize at a variety of schools. Each presenter will share how their institution uses WUE. The session will discuss reasons why students may consider going out of state for college. Women’s colleges have educated some of the smartest and most creative thinkers, leaders, community builders, and change agents in the world. In this session, participants will look at the rich legacy of women’s colleges along with 21st century outcomes for students today and tomorrow. 1.E. Class of 2030: How Higher Education Will Change in the Next Decade and Beyond – University Union, Orchard III (2nd floor)

Over the last decade skyrocketing tuition, technological innovation and increasing globalization have challenged the viability of the traditional university approach. During this presentation the North American Lead for Minerva, a new innovative university program, will review challenges facing higher education today and a few of the innovative solutions that will shape universities in the years to come.

In this session, we will examine a range of application review methods, from least selective to most selective. Topics of discussion will include open enrollment, sliding admission scales, and the nuances of holistic review processes at selective and highly selective institutions. This session is intended for those who are newer to the profession.

2.A. The Coalition is Coming! What the New Coalition Platform and Application Will Mean for Your Students

Understand the effort to recast the admission process from a single application transaction to a four year student engagement process and how you can utilize it to empower students. 2.B. Empowering Student Success on High Stakes Exams – University Union, Summit Room (3rd floor)

This workshop will provide school staff with tools to prepare students to succeed on the SAT and ACT. We will discuss strategies for motivating students by developing test prep plans specific to underserved students at each grade level. We will summarize the key differences from the current SAT to the new SAT, and outline test prep plans to prepare for these new challenges. 2.D. Why a Christian College and What is My Education for? – University Union, Orchard II (2nd floor) With much of society leaning towards the financial cost and benefit of higher education, there is a sense of tension when talking about the benefit of a private Christian education. This presentation will attempt to debunk myths/fears about Christian colleges and instead remind educators about the important role of Christian colleges in the US and remind educators to prompt their students with the question "What is my education for?" 2.E. NCAA Eligibility – University Union, Orchard III (2nd floor) This session will focus on information regarding NCAA transfer and initial eligibility rules. The new rules for 2016 high school graduates and beyond will be explained and their impact discussed. This information is intended to help counselors better advise college bound student-athletes.

3.A. Prior Prior Year and FAFSA Filing: Upcoming Changes Everyone Should Know – University Union, Delta Room (3rd floor)

The upcoming FAFSA changes will allow students and families more time to meet the March 2nd Cal Grant, Middle Class Scholarship, and other institutional aid program deadlines. Opening the FAFSA three months earlier will also allow students and families to learn more about California state financial aid and assist them in making college choices. The California Student Aid Commission anticipates processing earlier Cal Grants for those students who begin to file in October. Students who are offered a Cal Grant will be provided information on the various types of financial aid available to them in California. Reports will also be made available to high school counselors and others, in an effort to assist them in identifying students who have not yet submitted a FAFSA or California Dream Act application. With current campus budget constraints, the necessity to innovate counseling practices is essential for students to benefit from special programs and transfer opportunities. Programs such as FrontDesk, Remind.com, and Google Hangout have been a benefit to counseling practices and connecting students to opportunities that will help support their success. 3.D. Military Service Academies & ROTC Scholarships – How to Best Guide Your Students – University Union Orchard II

(2nd floor) More students than ever before are applying to our five federal service academies and ROTC scholarship programs. The academy application process is not only complex, but time sensitive. This session will outline officer candidate characteristics, the application process, steps to strengthen applications, and alternate commissioning options. 3.E. Welcoming College Reps to Campus with a Student Host Program – University Union, Orchard III (2nd floor) As high school counselors, we are eager to efficiently and enthusiastically welcome every college representative to our campus during fall visits. Developing a student hosting program to greet and shepherd visitors is one way that high schools can help students take on a meaningful leadership role during visits and make an authentic impression on both seasoned and rookie admission reps. In this session we will describe how student hosting programs can work, discuss how to implement a program on your campus, and how to deal with challenges that might arise during the process. The focus will be on the practical aspects of implementing such a program and will include plenty of time for questions.

3.F. An Inside View to the College Admissions Process: A Panel Discussion - The WELL, Terrace Suite (2nd floor)

This session will look at the admission process from the perspective of varied colleges. Learn our admissions by the numbers and what really happens in committee. We will dissect all the parts of the application, and the value each plays in the decision process. As we dissect the importance of the academics attributes, you will learn how they are used in conjunction with personal qualities. How can students be prepared to put their best selves forward?
