1.0 Welcome Message from SAVTE

Dear friends and colleagues:

On behalf of the scientific and organizing committees, it gives me a great pleasure to invite you to the Second (SAVTE) International Symposium on Updates on Venous Thromboembolism that will be held in Sheraton hotel, Casablanca, Morocco on 01 -03 May, 2012.

The Saudi Arabian Venous Thrombo Embolic diseases advisory group (SAVTE) established in December 2008 as part of Saudi Thoracic Society (STS) and in 2011 it become The Saudi Association for Venous Thrombo Embolism.

Our main mission in SAVTE is to increase the awareness and knowledge in VTE, equally important is to facilitate advances in the treatment of affected people, as well as the routine implementation on VTE measures among Health Care Providers (HCP) within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. SAVTE will provide expertise to advise physicians, scientists, health authorities and the health care industry regarding medical technologies and pharmaceuticals relevant to VTE.

One of the important functions of SAVTE is to conduct periodic international, national and regional symposia to disseminate information acquired from the SAVTE activities, and identify research projects relevant to its activities.

We are sure that the scientific program will present a valuable and unique opportunity for participants to update their knowledge, advance their skills, as well as give a perfect environment to interact with colleagues, regional leaders and world experts in the field.

We look forward to see you in Casablanca, Morocco in this Second (SAVTE) Assembly and we trust that you will find it a memorable scientific, cultural and social experience.

2.0 About Us

SAVTE Founders

2.1. Saudi Association for Venous Thrombo-Embolism (SAVTE) The Saudi Association for Thrombo-Embolic diseases (SAVTE) is a national medical and research body that is considered as a part of the Saudi Thoracic Society (STS). SAVTE is devoted to increase the awareness and knowledge of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), and to facilitate advances in the treatment of affected people, as well as the routine implementation on thromboembolic prophylaxis measures among Health Care Providers within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

SAVTE is a non-profit, national group whose directors, executive officers and members receive no salary. Its central office is located at STS offices in Jeddah, KSA.

Fahad Al Hameed, MDMD, FCCP, FRCPC Chairman of Saudi Association for Venous-Thrombo-Embolism (SAVTE)

Dr. Al-Hameed is the head of the Saudi Association for Venous Thrombo Embolism (SAVTE). He is also the deputy chairman of the intensive care department and Director, ambulatory care Center & Services at National Guard hospital, Jeddah.

Dr. Al-Hameed Is a Professor assistant of Medicine/Critical Care King Saud Bin Abdelaziz University for health sciences KSAU-HS.

His interest is mainly related to the field of venous Thromboembolism, both from the prophylactic and therapeutic aspects.

He obtained his MBBCh from King Abdulaziz University Medical College, Jeddah in 1992. He joined the department of Internal Medicine at KFSH & RC as a resident in the Arab Board program from 1993 to 1995 then he was honored a scholarship to Canada by the Heath Affairs in National Guards.

He completed his residency training program at University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada in 1998 (1996 to 1998) and the fellowship training program in pulmonary and critical care at University of Manitoba, Canada in 2001. During this period, he obtained the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1999, The Royal College of Physician and Surgeon of Canada specialist certificate of Internal Medicine in 2000. Subsequently, he obtained the American Board of Pulmonary Medicine and the Canadian Board of Pulmonary/Respiratory Medicine in 2001 then the American Board of Critical Care Medicine and the Canadian Critical Care Medicine Fellowship in 2002.

In 2000, he was appointed as Consultant Intensivist and Pulmonologist, Assistant Professor of Medicine at University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada as well as Acting Director of Intensive Care Unit at Grace General Hospital.

He joined the Department of Medicine at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Western region in 2002 as a Consultant, Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine and he was in charged of the High Dependency Unit/Medical ICU. In 2003 till present, he was appointed as Deputy Chairman, Intensive Care Department and in December 2009, he was also appointed as Director, Ambulatory Care Center (Services). He is also the Chairman, Saudi Association for Venous Thrombo Embolism (SAVTE) since 2008.

Prof. Elalamy has been involved in the field of thrombosis and antithrombotic therapies since 1991, and his research interests include improving therapeutic strategies, identifying new biomarkers and the application of novel diagnostic techniques to the clinic.

He was a Post-Doc fellow at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, from 1998-2003, Associate Professor of Haematology at the APHP, Paris, from 1998-2008, and has also been Head of the ER2-Paris IV Research Group since 2005.

In his current position, Prof Elalamy has established an expert centre for HIT diagnosis and management in Paris, and a research centre for cancer and thrombosis, with specialised clinical and laboratory activity in platelet studies.

Since 1998, Prof Elalamy has given over 150 symposia and plenary lectures at international congresses, on a diverse range of issues including; platelet activation, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, hereditary thrombophilia,

antithrombotic strategies and resistance to anti-platelet agents. He has written over 120 peer reviewed articles and collaborated on several books on haemostasis and thrombosis, as well as editing the first French language book on Heparin-induced Thrombocytopenia in 2006. Prof Elalamy is an invited reviewer in a number of peer review journals, including; British Journal of Haematology, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Blood Coagulation and Fibrinolysis, and Thrombosis Research

Majdy Idrees, MD

Dr. Idrees is the head of the Saudi Advisory Group for Pulmonary Hypertension. He is the head of pulmonary vascular unit and the former head of the division of pulmonary medicine at Riyadh military hospital.

His interest is mainly directed toward pulmonary vascular diseases, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary thromboembolic diseases. He had contributed extensively to the educational activities in the field of pulmonary vascular diseases in the Middle East and North Africa.

In addition, Dr. Abdelaal holds the position of Chairman of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Head of King Abdullah International Medical Research Center. Dr. Abdelaal holds several achievement awards and is active on various fronts of teaching, academics, research with over 90 publications, management, quality improvement and auditing. His areas of research interest are thromboembolism, leukemia and lymphoma.

Dr. Mohamed Abdelaal, MD. FRCPath, FRCPI is a senior Consultant Haematologist at the adult Haematology/Adult BMT, Princess Noorah Oncology Center, King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Jastaniah obtained his Medical Degree from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1996. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in General Pediatrics in October 2001 and June 2002. He obtained his fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and Hematology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada in Year 2002, and certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in November 2006.

Dr. Wasil Jastaniah is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine in Umm Al-Qurah University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia since 2007. He is also a Consultant and Section Head of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT since January 2007, A/Chairman of Princess Noorah Oncology Center since 2010 at King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard Health Affairs, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Vice President of the Saudi Arabian Pediatric Hematology Oncology Society (SaPHOS) since 2011. Prior to this he was the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine in Umm Al-Qurah University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia and worked as a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT Consultant in Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT at the British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from July 2005 till January 2007.

Dr. Jastaniah has won numerous awards and distinctions, including the Award of Outstanding Academic Performance and Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Academic Performance and Leadership from the Saudi Arabian Cultural Attaché in Canada, Subspecialty Consultant of the Year “Rookie of the Year” award from British Columbia Children’s Hospital, Vancouver, Canada, and “Tutor of the Year” award from KAMC-Jeddah. He is also a member of the American Society of Hematology and an international associate member of the Children’s Oncology Group and other international societies.

Dr. Jastaniah has had numerous publications and has been an invited speaker at several international congresses. His current research interest is in acute leukemia and sickle cell anemia.
