OVERVIEW

ABOUT THE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS DRUG AND ALCOHOL COMMITTEE (NIDAC)

The Australian National Council on Drugs (ANCD) which provides independent advice to the

Australian Government on alcohol and drug policy, in agreement with the Australian

Government established NIDAC in 2004 to provide advice on Indigenous drug and alcohol

issues across Australia and the most appropriate and effective ways to address them.

As the leading voice in Indigenous alcohol and drug policy, NIDAC provides advice to

government, based on its collective expertise and knowledge from those working in the field,

health professionals and other relevant experts.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The harmful use of alcohol and other drugs among Indigenous Australians remains a significant

public health issue, as well as incurs significant social and economic costs to individuals,

families, communities and the nation as a whole.

Following on from the first two National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Conferences, the 3rd

National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Conference aims to highlight approaches that are

working to reduce the harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs and its associated harms

among Indigenous Australians.

This Conference will provide opportunities to showcase how different approaches are working in

the areas of:

Prevention and early intervention.

Treatment, including aftercare.

Workforce issues including provision of professional and peak bodies for Indigenous AOD

workers and organisations.

Partnerships between non Indigenous organisations and Indigenous controlled

organisations.

It is also seeking to have a focus on what works for Indigenous Australians in the areas of:

National frameworks for putting alcohol and other drug policy into action.

Supply reduction strategies including availability of alcohol, alternative fuels and culturally

sensitive law enforcement.

Harm reduction strategies including alternatives to alcohol and other drug use, such as

education, employment and sporting activities.

Factors that facilitate the provision of effective alcohol and other drug services to

Indigenous Australians, having regard to community control, adequate resourcing and

support and planned comprehensive interventions.

Policy development based on Indigenous peoples strengths, which is properly resourced

and for the long term.

Data to guide decision making and resource allocation.

High quality outcomes and evaluations of Indigenous specific interventions.

SPONSORSHIP BENEFITS

The 3rd

National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Conference will be able to provide sponsors with

valuable exposure to a range of culturally specific knowledge, marketing and networking

opportunities across Australia. Since NIDAC has immediate access to Indigenous people, the

alcohol and drug workforce, service providers, health professionals and experts, key

stakeholders, government and policy makers through its national networks, the Conference will

allow excellent learning, skills development and networking opportunities.

The Conference will also provide an opportunity for policy makers to gain an understanding of

what the issues and needs are to address harmful alcohol and other drug use and associated

harm among Indigenous people, what tools, initiatives, resources and practices work best, and

the evidence base that specifically targets these issues.

A conference of this kind would provide a valuable contribution to:

National standards of practice, guidelines and tools for those working to address Indigenous

alcohol and other drug misuse.

Future research to address gaps where there needs to be an evidence base.

National uptake and utilisation of successful evidence based practices, treatment and

initiatives.

Building productive partnerships between stakeholders and the service industry.

Substantially building the capacity of those working in the field and contribute to building a

local workforce.

Showcasing Indigenous policies, practices, leading models and initiatives that are culturally

safe, evidence based, locally designed, relevant and useful as best practice.

Acquiring useful knowledge and skills for workers and communities to address Indigenous

alcohol and other drug issues in their own locality.

Bringing people together from across Australia to share the latest information and

knowledge about addressing Indigenous alcohol and other drug issues.

Building collaborative partnerships and support networks.

Leading the way in achieving Indigenous health equality.

Acknowledging Indigenous workers for excellence in achievement in reducing the impact of

drug and alcohol use among Indigenous peoples.

WORKER SPONSORSHIP $NEG

A critical component to the success of the Conference is the attendance and participation of the

workforce who are working to address harmful Indigenous alcohol and drug use and its

associated harm. There are many organisations and workers across Australia who find it difficult

to take up opportunities that can equip them with the latest knowledge and best practices being

successfully used across Australia. This is particularly the case for those working in remote

areas, where travel and potential backfill / staff development opportunities can be extremely

limited and costly.

Sponsorship for workers may cover the cost of travel (return airfares), accommodation costs,

and/or registrations for specified workers. Financial support that allows workers to attend the

Conference will not only be of benefit to the individual but also to those organisations, service

providers and communities who are reliant on the workforce to provide quality services.

An example of costs for a person to attend from a remote area in Australia can be:

NT remote air travel $1,500 - $2,500*

SA remote air travel $1,500 - $2,500

WA remote air travel $2,000 - $2,500*

QLD remote air travel $2,000 - $2,500*

3 nights accommodation $700 - $800

Approx total cost per person $2,200 - $3,300

*Air Travel from regional and national airline prices are approx quotes based on average fares.

Air charter prices, where there is no domestic air travel service, have not been included.

*If you are interested in Worker Sponsorship to assist workers to attend the Conference and

would like a package to suit your specific needs, please contact us to discuss this opportunity.

INDIGENOUS DRUG & ALCOHOL AWARDS $6,000

NIDAC is seeking to acknowledge the tremendous work done by Indigenous workers around

Australia. Accordingly six awards are to be granted to individuals for their work in reducing the

impact of drug and alcohol use among Indigenous peoples.

Awards will be presented to one male and one female Indigenous drug and alcohol worker who

have made a significant commitment and contribution to reducing the impact of drug and alcohol

use among Indigenous peoples.

In recognition of the unique environment facing workers from remote locations two awards will

also be provided for one male and one female worker working in this setting.

An encouragement award is also to be made to one young male and one young female worker

who shows initiative and promise in their work in reducing the impact of drug and alcohol use

among Indigenous peoples.
