What’s new around the St. Francis Campus

Here is some of what is new with the renewed efforts to keep all we love about St Francis working, cost effective, beautiful and maintained.

We are currently reviewing Slip Mats to protect the carpets of the church. The churches heat controls [like a thermostat in your home] continues to be an issue. We are looking into replacement of the controls to safeguard and improve comfort levels, energy efficiency and the cost of maintenance. Lighting project for Parish Hall. This was a success. We needed an upgrade to our lighting system which had become costly to maintain as age had taken a toll and most of the equipment was worn out. Thank you to all involved in this project and please enjoy the lights in the cafeteria, one of the most obvious improvements. We were able to take advantage of public incentives to keep this upgrade very cost effective. This allowed installation of brighter lights that use less energy, reducing the Co2 footprint and in the long run saves St. Francis money. Glass replacement on South and West walls of the church We are moving forward to plan and get a final bid to replace the windows that have lost their seals. Other projects: Box Elder beetles are still a problem on campus but we are winning the battle for now. They are much better than last year. We had a roof leak in the school that is being repaired. As the roofing systems age we expect to see some issues. Contractors and the Maintenance team are working to keep the buildings safe and dry. Walkway light poles are showing their age and becoming costly to maintain and run. We will be looking into upgrading these lights to improve lighting and reduce costs. We have been working tirelessly this year to reduce clutter in storage areas. This will be a continued effort to organize and reduce clutter. Organization saves everyone time.

We made a ton of progress this summer on reclaiming our landscaping to keep the campus beautiful. There is a lot left to do.

Volunteer Opportunities At St. Francis

__________________________________ We can’t have an active parish

without you! There is a new section on the St. Francis website which lists the volunteer needs of

the parish. Please consider checking it out periodically and contributing to your parish

family in service. Examples of volunteer efforts: baking pies with the Holy Rollers, helping in the kitchen

for events, setting up bedding for Hope Shel-ter, setting up tables/chairs for events, etc.

Mass Explanations Attention, starting immediately and continuing through winter, we will NOT be distributing the Precious Blood during Mass. The reason for this change is to help avoid spreading colds and flu during this season. The explanation of why we should not clap at the end of Mass: From the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1325: “The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communication in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirt.” “Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment.”–Cardinal Ratzinger, before becoming Pope Benedict XVI

Respect Life

Catholic Corner

How does the Sign of the Cross express the

mystery of the unity and trinity of God?

“In the name” expresses our belief that there is

only one God; “of the Father and of the Son and

of the Holy Spirit” expresses our belief in the

Trinity; tracing a cross on ourselves expresses

our belief in our Redemption by the death of

Jesus Christ on the cross.

Next week: Are distractions in prayer sins?

Thank you to everyone who has ever supported our school or any school with Campbell’s Labels or Box Tops. The Campbell’s Label program was discontin-ued last year. The Box Top program is changing from clipping Box Tops to a digital program.

If a product still has the old label, clip it and bring it in before the expiration date.

The new labels will look like this:

If you see this label, use the new Box Top App to scan your receipt. The app will find the participating prod-ucts and the receipt. They are still worth 10 cents each. And if the school is having a classroom contest, you can still designate the classroom that should get cred-it. Eventually, all Box Tops will be digital. Other ways to support the school and parish: On Amazon, sign up for the Smile program and choose St. Francis Church. You can also register your Fred Meyer card with St. Francis. Grab a blue bottle bag, fill it up and return it to the church. Watch for events like the annual Holy Rollers pie sale.

ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL SIXTH GRADE NEWS

As I reflect on the activities our 6th graders at St. Francis have experienced over the past month, the wind is blowing fall leaves into little whirlwinds outside my window. There is a definite chill in the air. The end of October not only marks the change of seasons, but also marks the changes our 6th graders have made since school began. I am proud to share the students’ accomplishments with you so far this year! Blessings, Ms. Gelao

Field trip to St. Mary’s Academy: On October 17th, our 5th and 6th graders attended St. Mary’s Academy production of “A Wrinkle in Time.” The theme of this classic science fiction story dramatizes the conflict between good and evil, and the importance of being true to who you are. Many 6th graders came back to school motivated to audition for the St. Francis Christmas play. Way to show your confidence, 6th grade ac-tors!

Projects, Projects, Projects! Our sixth graders have been busy with project-based learning assignments this month. In science, they have created “Cell Scenes” choosing a variety of dramatic and colorful ways to dis-play their knowledge of human cells. In social studies students have been busy learning about the mummifi-cation process used in Ancient Egypt by mummifying chickens in the classroom! In music, students worked in pairs to develop Power-Point presentations on a variety of musicians which they shared with their class-mates. In religion, students have chosen a saint to research and are in the process of typing up biographical reports. Their teachers are proud of the 6th graders for taking risks, trying new things, and supporting each other, as they face the rigors of middle school!

Halloween Howls: The sixth grade class is looking forward to a well-deserved break from their academic studies on Halloween. All St. Francis students are encouraged to wear their costumes to school on Hallow-een day. At 1:45pm there will be a parade in the gym, followed by a Halloween carnival! Our two 6th grade Student Council representatives, Hadley and Siena, have been busy working with the Council to prepare tricks and treats for the student body. Thank you Hadley and Siena for your creative ideas and hard work!
