It is really important that if you feel like you are not coping you speak to a trusted adult.

If the current news is making you feel anxious, worried or stressed, here are some things that you can do.

This activity can help you to understand how strong emotions can take hold, and how to find peace when these strong emotions feel overwhelming. Mindfulness

Jar

What you will need• A clear container that

will hold liquid tightly. A mason jar or a clear plastic bottle will work well.

• PVA glue • Glitter • Food colouring

(optional) • Glitter glue (optional)

How to make your mindfulness jar1. Take your jar or bottle and fill it almost to the top with

warm water.2. Next, add a big spoonful of PVA glue (with additional

glitter glue). Have fun getting the consistency right for you – the more glue you use, the longer it will take for the glitter to settle.

3. If you want to, you can now add a few drops of food colouring for a more vibrant effect.

4. Now add the glitter and stir the contents together. You may need to add more water, but remember to leave some space to allow the liquid to move.

5. Finally, put the lid back on your jar and shake to make the glitter swirl! If you are using a bottle, you might want to super glue the lid on to prevent any liquid from escaping.

mindfulness jars with her

Take it out on the jar – Shake it! Imagine that the glitter is like your thoughts when you’re stressed, mad or upset. See how they whirl around and make it really hard to see clearly? That’s why it’s so easy to make silly decisions when you’re upset – because you’re not thinking clearly. Don’t worry this is normal and it happens in all of us (yep, grownups too).

Let the glitter (and your thoughts) calm down…Now watch what happens when you’re still for a couple of moments. Keep watching. See how the glitter starts to settle and the water clears? Your mind works the same way. When you’re calm for a little while, your thoughts start to settle and you start to see things much clearer. Deep breaths during this calming process can help us settle when we feel a lot of emotions.Focus on one emotion at a time, such as anger, and think about how the shaken verse the settling glitter is like that emotion.

Debate – Why is it so important? A debate is a structured and formal argument over an issue or policy.

There are two sides - one supporting, one opposing.

Benefits of debating include:•Allowing you to think about aspects and perspectives you may not have considered.

•Encourages you to speak strategically.•Improving public speaking skills.•Learning how to create a persuasive argument.

•When you have to argue against your personal view you realise that there are two sides to the argument

It is from the British parliamentary tradition that much of today’s debating takes its inspiration. As we live in a democracy, it is important that we listen to each other and discuss the best ways to develop our country. Watch the

video to learn how debate helps to structure our society.

Debating can look intimidating from the sidelines, with speakers appearing confident, passionate and unwavering, but it consists of skills that anybody can learn. These skills can be incredibly valuable.

At the end of your debate use the Google form that you have been sent to discuss these statements.

Prompt questions

• How has COVID-19 changed the way we go about our daily lives and interact with others?

• Do we have to be more considerate to others now? Why/Why not?

• Many organisations have focused on promoting kindness – what is the benefit of this?

• Will people be able to empathise with others after so long not socialising?

• Should we only concentrate on being kind to those in need?

• Has it changed how you think about people locally and globally?

• Has lockdown meant you have personally had to help someone? How did that feel?

• What would you say are the three things that you value in society now?

Debate – People will be kinder to others after this pandemic…

FACT: Ten million UK adults have been

volunteering in their community during the corona virus.

FACT: More than £1bn was spent on services and goods that people knew they would never be able to use during the pandemic, including payments to home cleaners and gardeners.

Debate – Children should choose what they learn in school…

Prompt questions• Would this include all children in primary and

secondary school? • Could children learn anything they wanted?• If you aren’t interested in a subject, are you

going to learn anything in that lesson? • Are there some things everyone should learn,

even if they find them boring?• Would this help children to prepare for jobs

when they are adults? • Would children bother to learn literacy and

numeracy? • Would teachers be happier teaching interested

children? • What would you choose to learn in school?

FACT: The UK introduced a national curriculum in 1988,

meaning all schools had to teach more or less the same subjects.

FACT: Students studying for their GCSES have to study English, Maths and Science.

FACT: Some special schools do let pupils decide what they want to learn, and when, but they are very rare.

Debate – Everyone has the responsibility to tackle climate change…

Prompt questions• What do you do in your day to day life to help

protect the planet? • What do you think would make the biggest impact

on reducing global warming?• How do you think lockdown has impacted climate

change?• Who do you think is most affected by the current

climate situation?• Do the actions of an individual make a difference

compared to those of big organisations? • Young people around the globe went on strike to

advocate fighting climate change – do you think this had an impact?

• Some world leaders do not believe that climate change is something to be concerned about. Why might this be a problem?

FACT: The United Nations says we could have just 10 years left to limit a climate change catastrophe.

FACT: A normal transatlantic round-trip flight can release around 1.6 tonnes of CO2 – almost as much as the average yearly emissions of one person in India.

Climate change refers to the average long-term changes over the entire Earth. These include warming temperatures and changes in precipitation, as well as the effects of Earth’s warming, such as:• Rising sea levels• Shrinking mountain

glaciers• Ice melting at a faster

rate than usual in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic

• Changes in flower and plant blooming times.
