When was the Great Wall of China built?

The great wall of china was built over 2000 years ago (year 13) - a long time ago for sure. That was even before they had cars, planes, and electronics!

Some sections of the wall date from 7 to 4 BCE (Before Common Era)

It took over 10 centuries to build the Great Wall.

How big was The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China starts in Shanhaiguan and ends in Lop lake (Lop Nur) in western China. That is very, very long for a wall! It spreads very far across China. It is over 10,000 miles long and over 20 feet tall. It follows the southern edge of outer Mongolia. It is so long, it is the longest manmade structure in the world.

Who built the Great Wall of ChinaMillions of people built the great wall of China. More than 300,000 soldiers built the great wall along with 500,000 other people. If you did something to upset the Emperor, he would punish you by building the wall.

These people, were being punished by the Emperor and helped build the great wall.

What was the Purpose of the Great Wall

The Great Wall of China was built to keep out Mongol and northern Chinese invasions. When the wall was built, they didn’t have planes back then to fly over the wall, to invade China. So it blocked invaders from getting into China.

What was the Great Wall of China made Out of?The Great Wall of China was made out of many materials. It was made from packed earth, stone, brick, mud, rocks, and many other things. Most of it was made from stone brick.

Fun Facts

• The Chinese name for the Great Wall is Wan-Li Qeng Qang • Before The Great Wall of China, there used to be several

long walls protecting the towns and cities, but invaders were able to get in. So, the Emperors and soldiers built walls in between them in order to connect them into one great wall.

• Over the years, the Great Wall of China changed from the color brown, from the stones, to a whitish-grey color because of aging, weather, erosion, and tourists.
