My first president’s message comes to you with a heavy heart regarding the devastation that flood waters have caused across Louisiana. So many of us have been impacted by the flooding in some way, my thoughts are with those who lost so much. I’m sure you can agree that witnessing the strength of our community over the past weeks is a testament to Louisiana’s resiliency.

On the heels of this unprecedented rainfall event, dropping an estimated 6.9 trillion gal-lons of water in Louisiana, causing 1/3 of our state to have historic flooding; September brings the largest water quality event in North America, WEFTEC 2016 in our backyard of New Orleans (September 24-28). I encourage you to attend the event any way you can; with technical speakers, workshops, tours, exhibition hall, service opportunity, and fan favorite operations challenge.

We are continuing our partnerships with Louisiana Conference and the Louisiana Solid Waste Association Conference to provide more opportunities for you to combine techni-cal topics with networking events in spring 2017. As we begin planning for these events as well as continuing our chapter luncheons, I want to make sure that we are providing speakers and topics that you want to hear; please email me ([email protected]) any suggestions.

I’m looking forward to this upcoming year and working with you in continuing to make LWEA great. To do this, I need your help: join a committee, suggest a topic or be a speaker. Our volunteer organization wouldn’t be what it is without you.

Our area is just beginning to recover from a disaster and many people are in the cleanup process. While having to deal with insur-ance companies, adjusters, and the overwhelming task of home restoration, everyone should also keep in mind the hidden dangers that lurk during this cleanup process. Some dangers include electrical dangers, carbon mon-oxide, heat stress, downed power lines, and stress and fatigue.

The National Institute for Oc-cupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that work-ers take precautions during the cleanup process. These suggested precautions from the NIOSH include but are not limited to:

• Turnoffthepoweratthemainbreaker or fuse in your home if water has been present near your electrical circuits. Do not touch electrical equipment if the ground is wet, unless power has been turned off. Never handle a downed powerline. • Operateallgas-powereddevicessuch as generators, pumps, etc. outside because these devices re-lease carbon monoxide which can be deadly.

• Drinkwaterevery15minutes,even if you are not thirsty, in

order to reduce the potential for heat stress. Wear loose clothing and work during cooler hours whenever possible. Take frequent breaks throughout the day.

• Workingroupstoperformheavy lifting of debris and con-struction material that weighs more than 50 pounds per person.

• Properlycleanallopenwoundsand cuts to prevent illness. This is extremely important when expo-sure to waters potentially con-taminated with human, animal, or toxic wastes exists.

The risks of suffering an illness increases when combined with stress, long hours, and fatigue. In order to reduce the risks of illness, the NIOSH suggests you set priorities, resume a normal sleep schedule as soon as possible, and take advantage of disaster relief programs in your community.

With so many members of our community affected, it is impera-tive that we all pitch in and stay cognizant of friends and family who may be in need of emotional or physical support.
