I would like to graciously thank our sponsors and exhibitors of this event. They are our greatest asset; without their support the technical conference and scholarships we provide would not be possible:

On Wednesday, April 17th through Friday, April 19th, the Louisiana Water Environment Association, held its 21st annual conference, entitled "Our Louisiana Waters are Worth It" at the Marriott Convention Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our thanks go out to all who attended. We hope you had a great time, and were able to leave with some newfound knowledge and ideas from the superb technical sessions offered this year. We enjoyed seeing all of you, and are already looking forward to next year’s conference. The planning committee will soon be working hard to put together a wonderful program.

This year’s conference gave participants access to a series of unique ques-tion and answer sessions presented by some of the state’s top experts. In addition, participants were able to attend dynamic technical presenta-tions with experts covering areas such as shoreline cleanup and assess-ment, engineering ethics, nutrient removal, stormwater compliance, and the ever popular collection systems roundtable.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to support this remark-able event, especially our board, committee chairs, conference partici-pants, speakers, sponsors, award recipients, and exhibitors. Again thanks to all who were present, our conference is a powerful tool to help spread our vision.

OPERATIONSCHALLENGE

Congratulations to the Lafayette Utilities System Operators for Winning the 3rd Annual LWEA Operations Challenge!

LWEA hosted its 3rd Annual Louisiana Operations Challenge competition on April 18-19, 2013, in conjunction with the LWEA 2013 conference in Baton Rouge. The Ops Challenge is a test of skill and speed for teams of wastewater treatment professionals who compete in timed events for the chance to represent LWEA at the national competition at WEFTEC, which will take place later this year in Chicago. The competi-tion showcases the skills and talent of Operators who work at Louisiana’s wastewater treatment plants and collections facilities. These employees perform highly specialized tasks by treating millions of gallons of wastewater every day, keeping Louisiana’s waters safe and clean. Operators from Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) have spent all year preparing for the various events, including pipe assembly, pump repair, safety, laboratory skill, and process/wastewater knowledge.

Thanks to the support of their bosses at LUS, the Lafayette Water Dawgs have been able to spend a good amount of time preparing, training, and getting acquainted with the Ops Chal-lenge Events. As you can see from the pictures, Kevin Richard and his crew have assembled all of the equipment necessary to put on a full-fledged Ops Challenge for LWEA. With support from Victaulic providing the pipe assembly for the Victaulic

Event, Steve Hoss & J’Ohnnie Wilson providing the process test, and J’Ohnnie Wilson & Mary Evans providing the sup-plies for a full-fledged laboratory event, we were able to host a full Ops Challenge in 2013. We want to thank Mary Evans for coming all the way from Texas to help out with the Laboratory Event this year. Of course the most anticipated event was the safety event which had to be held in the parking lot due to the enormous size of the equipment. The Lafayette Water Dawgs had some strict judging by the assembled panel of judges, which included the WEF representative George Martin, who came from South Carolina to participate in the 2013 Conference.

The Water Dawgs are gearing up, training, and preparing to travel to Chicago this October to participate in the national Ops Challenge at WEFTEC 2013. Thanks to the generosity of exhibitors and sponsors of our conference and golf tourna-ment, LWEA is able to assist the Water Dawgs on their road to Chicago.

If your municipality or company would like to participate in Ops Challenge 2014 and afford your operators a chance to work hands-on in a subject matter area that might be new to them, please contact LWEA so we can get you started! If you or your operators would like to see what the events are like, Kevin Richard has offered to give demonstrations on the road, give any of the LWEA board a call and we will make the connection.

I am very proud to announce that the 2013 LWEA Waste-water Collection Systems annual golf tournament and panel presentation went off without a hitch. Months of hard work, planning, and dedication by all of our committee members went into this year’s panel presentation and golf tournament. I can certainly say now that it was all worth it!

This year’s collection systems panel presentation was designed to highlight some of the notable wastewater projects and programs across Louisiana. Presenters on the panel included Greg Gordon, Director of Environmental Services for St. Tammany Parish, Peter Stump and Joanne Massony, Veolia Water (representing the City of Kenner), and Mike Noto, Director of Operations for the City of Slidell. Each repre-

sentative presented facts and information on their respective sewer program. The presentations included sewer system / service area facts, history leading to enforcement action, a de-scription of the sewer program to date, the current status of the sewer program, the sewer program’s forecast over the next year, 5 years and 10 years, the sewer program’s biggest chal-lenges, program funding strategies and lessons learned. After the presentation, it was quite evident that even though each of these municipal sewer systems is unique, they all face the same struggles and challenges. I have received a ton of great feedback about the presentation. Special thanks to Greg, Peter, Joanne, and Mike for making this panel presentation a success! Feel free to contact me if you would like a copy of the presentation. Continued on next page

The 2nd annual golf tournament was held at Santa Maria Golf Club in Baton Rouge, LA and we raised over $17,000!!! This money will go to-wards the three (3) LWEA scholarships: Frederick G. Deiler Memorial, Kenneth L. Keffer Memorial, and Harold Norman Memorial. Proceeds will also help cover the cost of sending an operations challenge team to compete at the WEFTEC Annual Conference. I would like to person-ally thank the 24 teams that signed up for the tournament as well as all of our food, beverage, and hole sponsors for their generous contribu-tions. I would also like to thank all of the volunteers who showed up to assist with the tournament. The winning team of this year’s tourna-ment, with a score of 58, was composed of myself, Duane Graham, Darryl Graham, and Brad Graham. Coming in 2nd place, with a score of 61, was Brian Conroy, Mike Rhodes, Brad Dutruch, and Fred Reyn-olds. Picking up the coveted last place trophies, with a score of 78, was Michael Johnston, JC Blanchard, Chris Lacroix, and Josh Fontenot. Luckily, no one was injured during their round of play.

Last, but not least, I would like to thank the following members of the wastewater collection systems committee for their time, support and dedication to our committee: Jacob Loeske, Mira Para, Greg Kolenovsky, Jake Lambert, Shane Sangalli, Mike Noto, Randy Smith, Mike Rhodes, and Spencer Tuell. I would also like to be the first to welcome our new member Peter Stump to the committee. We typically meet once each month via conference call to discuss relevant news and events within the wastewater industry and to plan for all of the LWEA conference festivities.

If you would like to be a part of the ever-growing collection systems committee, or would like more information regarding any of the topics discussed in this article, please feel free to email me at [email protected]

Respectfully Yours, Josh GrahamLWEA Collection Systems Committee Chairman
