1 Lion, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14B, I hope that everyone managed to stay warm and healthy during the harsh January weather. We are now into February, a month known for Groundhog Day, President’s Day, and Valentine’s Day. When one thinks about Valentine’s Day the first symbol that comes to mind is the heart. The heart is the universal symbol for love and kindness. To quote one of the most famous friends of the Lions, Helen Keller, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart.” As I enter the home stretch of District Governor club visitations, it is with heartfelt appreciation that I say thank you to all the clubs that have let me be a part of their meetings. Although each club’s memberships makeup is a little different from each other and no two meeting are run exactly the same, all clubs and it members have one thing in common, they all have heart. When there is a need in their communities they open their hearts to help eliminate the need. When Mother Nature forces her will on other parts of the country and the world, our members open their hearts by donating goods and money. Therefore, as we go forward let’s continue to make an effort to wholeheartedly be the best Lions we can be. I will end this part of my message with a quote by the nineteenth century writer, Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Write on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” Although, spring seems a long way off, it is time to start thinking about club officers for the next Lions year. It is important that we have leaders that can guide their clubs and continue the fine tradition of service that set Lions apart from other organizations. There have been many fine men and women who have been initiated into the Lions clubs of District 14B this past year, let’s make them the Lion leaders of tomorrow by putting them on the boards of your local Lions club. Who knows if one of more of them may become future District Governors!! Speaking of District Governors, we are still looking for First and Second Vice District Governor candidates for next year. If you meet the criteria for these positions, please consider this opportunity to serve. It is with heartfelt sincerity that I thank you all for being Lions. Lion, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14B,

I hope that everyone managed to stay warm and healthy during the harsh January weather.

We are now into February, a month known for Groundhog Day, President’s Day, and

Valentine’s Day. When one thinks about Valentine’s Day the first symbol that comes to

mind is the heart. The heart is the universal symbol for love and kindness. To quote one

of the most famous friends of the Lions, Helen Keller, “The best and most beautiful things

in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart.”

As I enter the home stretch of District Governor club visitations, it is with heartfelt

appreciation that I say thank you to all the clubs that have let me be a part of their meetings.

Although each club’s memberships makeup is a little different from each other and no two

meeting are run exactly the same, all clubs and it members have one thing in common, they

all have heart. When there is a need in their communities they open their hearts to help

eliminate the need. When Mother Nature forces her will on other parts of the country and

the world, our members open their hearts by donating goods and money. Therefore, as we

go forward let’s continue to make an effort to wholeheartedly be the best Lions we can be.

I will end this part of my message with a quote by the nineteenth century writer, Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“Write on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”

Although, spring seems a long way off, it is time to start thinking about club officers for the next Lions year. It is important

that we have leaders that can guide their clubs and continue the fine tradition of service that set Lions apart from other

organizations. There have been many fine men and women who have been initiated into the Lions clubs of District 14B this

past year, let’s make them the Lion leaders of tomorrow by putting them on the boards of your local Lions club. Who knows

if one of more of them may become future District Governors!! Speaking of District Governors, we are still looking for

First and Second Vice District Governor candidates for next year. If you meet the criteria for these positions, please consider

this opportunity to serve.

It is with heartfelt sincerity that I thank you all for being Lions.

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,

I hope all of you are surviving the winter. It’s been more “wintry” this year than last year.

February brings us Valentine’s day and President’s Day. I hope all plan to do something

nice with your significant other for Valentine’s Day and give some thought to George

Washington and Abraham Lincoln and what great Presidents and leaders they were.

I recently attended a weekend long 1st Vice District Governor’s (FVDG) Constitutional Area

1B Training Seminar, which included about 30 FVDG’s from Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia

and Pennsylvania. Our facilitators were PIDs Stephen Glass from West Virginia, Steve Sherer from Ohio and Cindy Gregg

from Pennsylvania. This is one of the training sessions that all FVDGs must attend. The main gist of the training is goal

setting. The facilitators were very helpful to us in learning how to set goals for our upcoming year as District Governors.

The goals that Lions Clubs International (LCI) requires District Governors to set fall into four areas; Leadership,

Membership, Service and LCIF. The first three areas you will recognize from the Global Action Team (GAT), which is

comprised of the Global Leadership Team (GLT), Global Membership Team (GMT) and the new in 2017 Global Service

Team (GST). These teams originate at LCI, but there are teams at the Constitutional Area, Multiple District and District

Areas. LCI also wants us to have a GLT Chairman, GMT Chairman and GST chairman at each Lions Club. The GLT

Chairman is supposed to be the 1st Vice President of each club, with the President filling the role as the GAT Chairman just

as the District Governor is the GAT Chairman of the District.

As I said before, some of the goals that DGs set will be Leadership, Membership, and Service and these will be developed

by the FVDG with the help (and approval) of the Multiple District 14-B GAT Chairman (PID Cindy Gregg) and

Constitutional Area 1B Chairman (PID Stephen Glass). At the 2018 International Convention, LCI is rolling out a new

LCIF program which will be like Campaign Sightfirst and Campaign Sightfirst II, except it will not just target Vision, it

will be a very aggressive campaign to raise funds for the New Service Framework comprising Diabetes, Environment,

Hunger, Vision and Pediatric Cancer. Leos will be included in our service projects under the Framework’s Focus on Youth.

DGs will not be setting LCIF goals. LCIF will tell us what the goals are.

We were taught that our goals must be SMART goals, which are developed with the help of a SMART Goal and Action

Plan Template. SMART means Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time Bound. In other words, a goal must

be well defined; you must be able to measure your goal; you must be able to accomplish your goal; it must be a reasonable

goal and you must be able to accomplish it in a set time period.

While we, as upcoming District Governors will be planning and setting our goals, the goals themselves are really district

goals and we must rely upon the Lions in the Districts to accomplish them.

I’m hoping that I will be able to count on all of you, the Lions of District 14-B, to help me to accomplish our goals and have

an Excellent Lions Year during 2018-2019.

“Life is short and unpredictable. Eat dessert first”

-- Helen Keller

(from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette-Portfolio section)

What a gift!

As a member of the West Mifflin Lions Club, I was collecting donations

for the blind on our annual White Cane Days at the Giant Eagle next to

Kennywood Park back in August. A young lady placed what looked like a

$20 bill into my White Cane can. Later I discovered it was some 20’s along

with two $100 bills. We thank her for her most generous donation. Her

contribution plus the contributions of many who participated will benefit

blind organizations in the Pittsburgh area. BILL SCHARRITTER

The club held it 75th anniversary / Christmas party on 12/12/2017 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Bethel Park. There were 48

members and guests in attendance. Lion Dave Lovejoy did a power point presentation highlighting the 75-year history of

the club, and a choral group from St Valentine's provided musical entertainment including a Christmas Carol sing along.

There was also a grab bag gift exchange.

“Mostly what prompted me was I really liked the

individuals who were involved in the club,” he said

about his three times at the helm, “and the idea of

serving the community and working with people

locally.”

Willison was among the past presidents – his wife, Judy, included

– to be honored as the club celebrated 75 years of community

Danielle Gosnell, the 2017-18 president, also acknowledged club members who are Melvin Jones Fellows, the award named

after the Lions founder that represents the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the

nature and purpose of the international organization. She presented honorees with gifts and letters of appreciation, saying

in part: “You have done remarkable work. While having such a busy schedule, it is really commendable that you managed

to complete so much for the club. I also feel proud to be linked with you in the process. I am very happy to be a part of this

organization and feel a great sense of achievement. Your accomplishments are an inspiration for everyone. Keep up with

your hard work and community leadership. It will never go unnoticed!”

Jim Willison, a retired Bethel Park teacher and administrator, served as president from 1982-83, 2004-05 and 2015-16. He

has been with the club since 1977, surpassed in longevity by Dr. Jay Wells, a former state representative with 45 years of

membership.

“When I joined,” Willison said, “I was in my early 30s, and all the members seemed

so much older. But it was a wonderful opportunity to get to know them and become

involved. Most of them were local community leaders or businessmen, so it seemed

like a special privilege to be involved with them. And later on, I was so glad I had

gotten to know so many of them.”.

He also is a Melvin Jones Fellow, along with Wells and current members Carl

Battistone, Ruth Battistone, Dominick Battistone, Jack Boyle, Bob Pflueger and Bill

Raymer.

Carl Battistone was

club president in

1985-86 and went

on to serve as a

director of the

International

Association of

Lions Clubs from

1998-2000.

Pflueger went the Grover Cleveland route and was

president for two terms, 2006-07 and 2013-14.

Other past presidents honored were Wells, 1991-92; Bob

McKnight, 2005-06; Jack Boyle, 2009-10; Judy Willison,

2012-13; and Dave Lovejoy, 2016-17. Lovejoy’s father,

Malcolm, served as governor of Lions District 14-B from

1958-59 as the first of five Bethel Park members to advance to the

top position of regional leadership.

“I’ve been around this my entire life,” Dave Lovejoy said.

Dr. Jay Wells, the club’s longest-

serving member, wears his festive

jacket to each year’s holiday

celebration.

The current governor, Geoffrey Temple of

Pleasant Hills, attended the celebration and

acknowledged Bethel Park as the largest

community-based club in the district, which

encompasses Allegheny County.

The Lions Club of Pittsburgh partnered

with Blind & Vision Rehabilitation

Services and the United Way of

Allegheny County to sponsor the holiday

fruit basket event. The Lions Club

generously purchased 100 fruit baskets

that were delivered throughout Allegheny

County on December 22nd by members of

the Pittsburgh Lions Club, staff of Blind

& Vision Rehabilitation Services and

volunteers of Meals on Wheels to

seniors. This generous donation brought

many smiles and much needed nutrition to

an underserved population during the

holiday season.

This is a great way to connect with our

community members who desperately

need our support especially during the

holidays while also supporting a great

cause, Blind & Vision Rehabilitation

Services. If you or members of your club

are interested in participating next year,

please don’t hesitate to contact Leslie

The Bridgeville Greater Area Lions completed

“Year One” with a holiday party on January 6th.

Celebrating our first year as a Lions Club was a

huge success. New club development should be a

team effort in order to ensure the success of

recruiting efforts and the new club. (and that

happened) Team members should be hardworking,

committed to the development of the new club and

passionate about being a Lion. (and we are)

Some of the year’s highlights were: a charter night

event attended by more than 100 people including

Lions Club leaders, township commissioners,

police and fire personal, 4 speakers and other Lions

Club members and quests.

We had our first annual well attended spaghetti

dinner, started a speaker series during our monthly

meetings, and made monetary donations to many

local and national organizations.

The club participated in local community days and

celebrations, volunteered with food rescue

organizations, and donated important safety

equipment to the police department.

Advisory Board comprised of Lions from Districts 14B and 14E. The

Board is selling a $1,500 raffle ticket with two numbers at $5 each to

kick off the beginning of the Diabetes celebration. Clubs can contact the District’s Cabinet Secretary and

Advisory Board Treasurer, Elli Latterman, at 412-664-2590 in the McKeesport Hospital Foundation for tickets.

Lions Ralph and Michele commended the Clubs, UPMC McKeesport and Lion Tracy Petras for their assistance

Before we study, before we practice, before we do just about anything - we have a choice:

To do what's easy or to do what's better...

It’s easier to eat out. It’s better to cook at home.

It’s easier to play someone that you know you can beat. It’s better to play the person who might

beat you.

It’s easier to read the SparkNotes. It’s better to read the book.

It’s easier to do it how it’s always been done. It’s better to challenge, stretch, and experiment.

It’s easier to talk about goals. It’s better to lace up and go to work on them – off stage.

It’s easier to enhance your strengths. It’s better to go to work on a weakness.

We’re presented this choice literally all of the time. The problem is: easy is fast, easy is fun,

easy is comfortable – and we’re wired to lean in that direction.

But we grow by choosing better.

We’ll never be perfect with this, but being aware of the choice can help us win the battle a few

more times.

Before you start, ask yourself: “Am I choosing easy, or am I choosing better?

Have a great day!

Make a difference today,

Love Clint

PA Lions State Convention

January 6, 2018

Lions, Lioness and Leos,

The Lions of District 14-W will host the PA Lions State Convention in May 2019. In an

effort to make this convention appeal to as many people as possible, and encourage your

attendance, we have put together a survey. We ask that you take a few minutes to answer

the questions and send your response to [email protected]. Your opinion

matters, and we want to make this the type of event that all Lions, Leos and Lioness want

to attend.

Your participation is voluntary, and all responses will be kept confidential. Once completed

the survey can be sent by e-mail to: [email protected], or mail to PDG Andy

Piskel, 668 Liberty Court, Hazleton, PA 18201. Please send all responses by March 31,

2018.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. We look forward to your response

on how we can make the 2019 convention a fun filled informative event for everyone.

Should you have any questions or comments, please contact PDG Andy at 570-956-1245,

PDG Mimi Tosh at 570-814-4847 or [email protected], or PDG Joan Milligan at 570-

Sincerely,

PDG Joan Milligan
