2014 Concert SERIES Announced at WUMC Our next concert will be presented Sept 20. Complete flier for our 2nd annual concert series is available in our narthex and on our website www.wumcdmd.org. The 2014 series has been well-received with performances by the Maryland State Boychoir and organist Christian Lane with soprano Jolle Greanleaf. Upcoming concerts feature a silent movie night and our Chancel Choir in a special Christmas concert. Our concert series is a fantastic opportunity to welcome the community into our church. Besides being a free gift of music to all, the series is also a fantastic evangelism tool. Please pick up a flier about the series in the narthex and share it with others in the Westminster community. If you see a visitor at one of the concerts, be sure to welcome them to our church. With your support, together we can continue working to Be Disciples and Make Disciples!

Do YOU KNOW…. Acts of Kindness?

In Luke 10:25-29 we read:

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself." "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Recall these are the verses that proceed Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan.

TV news and the daily newspapers often seem to focus on fires, murders, acts of terrorism, etc. - the dark things of life. Yet, everyday there are great positive things that happen—most of which go unreported, or at least are too infrequently covered by the media to offset the previously mentioned dark stuff.

Do you recall hearing on TV, or reading about the many courtesies and the generosity received by weary travelers—acts of kindness including places to sleep, food, toiletries, medicines, clothing, diapers, entertainment, use of phones and computers - all provided to complete strangers by the people and families of Newfoundland? Note 1 What follows will remind or introduce you to what occurred.

Following the 9/11/01 attack on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, the air space over the entire United States was closed. Planes scheduled to land in the US were told to land at the nearest site outside of the US. 53 planes with more than 10,000 passengers and crew from more than 3 dozen countries ended up in Gander, Newfoundland, a town with a population about equal to these new arrivers. What happened to these uninvited and unexpected people in the next few days they were there is a most wondrous example of the goodness of one group of human beings to another. The ‘plane people’ were welcomed and treated as special guests by their un-expecting hosts—a modern real life example (perhaps a parable) of "loving your neighbor as yourself.”

To learn more read, The Day the World Came to Town - 9/11 in Gander Newfoundland, by Jim DeFede.Note 4

My guess is, if you choose to read this book, you will have a renewed sense of what one does for a "neighbor.”

Perhaps you will reflect on and/or change how you "love your neighbor as yourself." Notes 2,3

NOTE 1: Newfoundland is an island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the most easterly province in Canada with one of the lowest crime rates in the country. Its land area of 156,453 square miles is bigger than the state of Montana (the fourth largest state in the US) and its population of 485,066 is less than Wyoming’s (the least in the US). Thus, the population density is about 3 persons per square mile. By contrast, the population density of Carroll County is about 373 persons per square mile.

NOTE 2: Suppose many people from one of the large cities near Westminster were forced to evacuate and ended-up in our town. What would we (you) do to for such uninvited and unexpected "neighbors"? Perhaps you will think of other situations where a "neighbor" could be, or is, in need. How you will respond?

NOTE 3: Is this a book you will ask the persons in your family to read regarding how leaders and common folk react to unexpected circumstances?

NOTE 4: If you purchase this book from Amazon you can order a paperback version from $5.54, or a Kindle version for $9.78.

Wouldn’t You Love Some

Since I understand God to be good and all-powerful, how can I make sense out of blatant evil and undeserved suffering in this world?

Does modern science make it impossible to seriously believe in the Christian message?

How should we relate to people of other faiths? Muslims, Buddhists, etc.?

Wasn’t the God reported in the Old Testament brutal? How should we understand the “Old Testament God”?

Beginning September 7, an adult Sunday School class will be using a thought-provoking video series to look at these and other issues that are obstacles to faith for many inside and outside the church. For seven weeks, a well-known theologian will present on video, followed by an energetic discussion.

All are warmly invited, just bring an open mind and willingness to grow with fellow Christians. The class meets at 10am for one hour in the New Life in Christ classroom, across the hall from Martha Manahan Room.

SERIOUS ANSWERS to HARD QUESTIONS

Flip Flop Thank You from The Cold Weather Shelter Team

Many thanks to members of our Sunday School classes, their families, and all others in our congregation who responded to the call for plain, rubber flip flops. Dozens of pairs will be

donated to the homeless guests of the Westminster Cold Weather Shelter for use as “shower shoes” because of your generosity. We also appreciate other supplies contributed to this cause—based on our experiences last year, every bit will be used.

We will continue to accept adult-sized flip flops throughout the months ahead and to seek volunteers for Friday night shelter staffing. Shelter workers arrive at 6 PM and leave at 11 PM when the nighttime guard arrives. We will establish teams that include experienced volunteers to help all newcomers to this effort, and on-site training is provided by staff of Carroll County’s Human Services Programs (CCHSP) before the mid-November through March season begins.

A FOOD EFFORT is being organized that will create a separate team of volunteers to provide and/or deliver and serve dinner to the approximately 40 guests who use shelter services nightly. We hope the good cooks of our congregation will help feed Westminster’s homeless during winter months while others deliver and serve hot, prepared food at the shelter.

More information will be forthcoming on all aspects of CWS needs as cold weather nears. To add your name to our volunteer roster for this year’s cold weather season, please contact Suzi Radcliffe via email to [email protected] or by calling 443.605.5106 or Clare Kazyak at [email protected].

Dear Westminster United Methodist Church

I hope all of you are enjoying the beautiful weather the Lord sent our way.

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”

The last instructions from the mouth of our Lord. Are we listening? Are we looking?

...a story from behind the walls about this Power:

“Thank you … for all your help and support. You have made a difference in my life through your teaching of God’s Word. I have hope, now, for a bright future and strength to get me through the hard times. With the Bible as my map and Jesus as my Guide I am no longer lost and my eyes have been opened. God bless you.”

Thank you so very much for being a partner with me in this great work… I thank God for you.

‘So very grateful for your generous support. I thank God for the work you are doing in our world.

God Bless!

Bob Kimmel, Chaplain
