Academy of Medical Educators?
• The Academy of Medical Educators is the professional organisation for all involved in the education and training of medical students and doctors.
Role of the Academy
• to provide leadership,
• promote standards and
• support all those involved in the academic discipline of medical education

Good Medical Practice
• General Medical Council’s (GMC) Good Medical Practice (2001) requires that:
• ‘If you are involved in teaching you must develop the skills, attitudes and practices of a competent teacher’ (para.16).
• How do employers, regulatory bodies and teachers themselves recognise, promote, value and develop education and training skills?
Professional standards
• The Academy’s professional standards are designed to provide a recognised national and international framework to demonstrate achievement
• And help to develop a transparent career structure for specialist medical educators.

• Two levels of recognition– Fellowship – defined by achievements– Membership – defined by commitment
Membership• Commitment in themes 1 and 2
– Attributes of educational professionals – Educational scholarship
• A demonstrable commitment within at least one of the other four themes
– Teaching and supporting learners– Assessment and feedback to learners– Design and planning of learning activities– Educational governance
Fellowship• Contribution linked to themes 1 and 2

• Either:– Achievements within each of the other four
themes
• Or– A substantial achievement in at least one of
the other four themes
