A DIRECTORY OF "SPIRITUAL CHURCHES"IN GHANA

A major problem facing a researcher in the area ofIndependent Churches in Ghana, is to know just what churchesare in existence, where they are located, when they were founded,who founded them, and their total membership. To meet this needwe have embarked on the compilation of a directory at theInstitute of African Studies.

It is difficult to give the correct estimate of thenumber of such groups in Ghana, since their numbers are constant-ly increasing. Professor Baeta dealt with nine of such groupsand he himself called his book "a study of some spiritual churches".Since the publication of his book many more churches have comeinto existence. Barrett estimated that there were about twohundred such groups in Ghana. In a paper* read at the 1969 Con-ference of the Historical Society of Ghana, I put their number atabout three hundred. But there is reason to expect the figureto be far more than that.

Information for the directory below was gathered throughpersonal acquaintance with some groups; through correspondencewith leaders of Spiritual Churches, as well as references to thefiles of two large associations comprising of Independent Churches,namely, the Pentecostal Association of Ghana, founded in 1962,

with its headquarters at Bibfanf in the Western Region; and theGhana Council for Liberal Churches, founded in 1968, with head-quarters at Accra. Further information was also obtained fromthe Deeds Registry of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources,where Spiritual Churches are requested to register in accordancewith the Trustees Incorporation Act of 1962.

Compilation of the directory is in process and the completedirectory will be published as soon as all the available informationis in. In the meantime, we furnish the Information gathered up todate.

, The directory Is arranged in chronological order and theaddresses, names of founders and dates are furnished where known.Information about total membership has been excluded but an attemptwill be made to estimate the total membership of these groups Inthe complete directory.
