Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Carers

Each week staff give colleagues ‘pats on the back’ to show appreciation and

recognition of a fabulous job well done. In the last week of term, my first

‘pat on the back’ goes to our children who have done a brilliant job and as

best they can under such unusual circumstances, my second ‘pat on the

back’ is to our amazing parents who have been juggling so much at home –

we think you’re amazing, connecting with each other when you can,

supporting our children with their learning (we are ever so grateful) and

last but certainly not least, my last ‘pat on the back’ goes to our wonderful

teachers and staff who have not missed a beat in supporting our children

and families this time. It’s been a tough gig for all and we all certainly

earned our holidays.

Thank you for your support, encouragement and feedback that has helped

us all continue to grow and support our children to the best of our ability.

support in ensuring that ALL devices are stored away with their chargers

for the holidays is very much appreciated. We have had more damaged

school work and not for personal use. I thank you for your support with

this.

might be returning to school onsite. Please be assured that when I have

to onsite schooling, we will see the students on Monday 4th October in their

usual WebEx meeting. Your child/children’s class teacher will be in

We are thrilled to announce an exciting new program at

APPS for our Grade 6 students. The Albert Park

Community Award launched 3 weeks ago and has been

enthusiastically taken up by our students. Students are

encouraged and supported to involve themselves in

community focused activities where they can share their

time and skills to help others.

They currently have 4 projects they can take part in to earn

their community service hours:

Mentoring Morning – G6 students reading and mentoring

G1 students (28 pairs of students and growing – just

brilliant!) every week.

Share the Food – students put meal bags together with

recipes for families in need.

Letter writing – writing letters to aged care residents in

isolation. Reaching out and connecting.

New! Knit one Give one (knitting for families in need) –

information sheet coming today.

Upcoming projects will continue to be developed.

Students work towards earning a bronze, silver or gold

award in recognition of their community service hours.

Our Grade 6 students have stepped up, already we are so

very proud of them!!

Thank you to our adult community volunteers in getting

this up and running – Lou, Sheena, Catherine, Jo and Fiona,

not to mention the great support from our G6 teachers.

Making a small but significant difference with time and

effort.

YEAR 4s LEMON CHALLENGE DURING REMOTE LEARNING #5

In the previous bout of remote learning, the Year 4 teachers challenged their classes to make lemonade out of

lemons, literally. ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’ is a popular phrase used to encourage optimism and a

positive can-do attitude in the face of adversity or misfortune. As we knew they would, the year 4 students

completed a brilliant range of activities that centred around lemons to have some fun. Students used lemons to

cook, play, bake and as inspiration in fictional stories. Well done to all the year 4 students and families who used

lemons creatively in lockdown. We loved seeing you make lemonade out of lemons!

PREPS VIRTUAL EXCURSION TO HEALESVILLE SANCTUARY

On Wednesday morning, prep students went on a digital excursion to Healesville Sanctuary. In Nature Play the

Wurundjeri Way, students discovered what makes this Country unique and why Healesville Sanctuary is special to

the Wurundjeri people. We listened to dreaming stories, explored simple Woiwurrung language and learnt about

Wurundjeri connections to plants and wildlife. Our tour guide, Bec, was so engaging and knowledgeable!

There were a few ideas of what students could make or do following our excursion including going on a nature

treasure hunt. Some of our students were so inspired, they decided to have a go at building a nest for local birds in

their neighbourhood. Margot (Prep E) and Emily Jane (Prep E) provided some photos of what they made.

GRADE 4 INQUIRY – CREATE

Over the past few weeks grade four students have been inquiring about our world and the people that live here.

As part of the CREATE phase we asked students to create a world that included native plants and animals, food

sources, fresh water, shelter and climate. Here are some of the learning that has occurred during the create phase

demonstrating understanding of geography and people. Students knew that they would be successful if they could

create a model world that shows their understanding of geography and people.

Our Grade 2s became entrepreneurs in the second half of term 3! They explored the past and present to inform

their predictions about the future. They brainstormed, planned designed, built and pitched their ideas for an object

of the future. As they are the inventors of the future, it only makes sense to start now!

Last Fridat we all gathered for the presentations and awards; all voted for by the stduents. Thanks to Candice T and

Andrea for coming along.

Congratulations to everyone involved!

ART TERM 3

Here are some of the wonderful entries for the National Portrait Gallery Little Darlings Portrait Prize. All of these

portraits were done at home with limited materials. Each one gives us a glimpse of the personality or interests of

the person.

MORE FABULOUS ARTWORK FROM OUR STUDENTS

The weather and our place

Grade 6

We considered how First Nations people often portray the weather and environment in their artworks. Students thought about

how our place and the weather could be portrayed using line and colour. During term 2, Grade 6 explored and experimented

with different line weights and patterns. They used these techniques to create tone and texture in these wonderful prints.

Birds in our Backyard

Grade 3 and 4

We live inner city with tiny gardens but fortunately we also have the beach and parks to call our backyard. Grade 3 and 4

thought about how lucky we are to have such a diverse range of birds that live with us in our suburb including beautiful swans,

owls and penguins! We thought about the places we see the birds including on our front fences, at the beach, on café tables and

by the lake. The artworks demonstrate thoughtful attention to the unique shape, colour and delightful character of each bird.

We hope that our portrayal of these beautiful birds also leads to a greater care of and respect for our backyard and their

habitat.
