Jesus' request to remain silent in this week's gospel is in connection to miracles. A miracle is a grace of God that is given as an answer to faith. A solid, consistent and true faith does not depend on miracles. It manifests and sustains itself in its purity of conviction and its ability to persevere. It is not carried away by extraordinary signs, a theophany or out of the ordinary manifestations, challenging science, human expectations or local culture. A gift from God can enrich the existing faith and it is given as a testimony of the Lord's power. But this does not define God, nor should it define our faith, our response to God himself. A miracle is the product of unconditional belief in God and his power. It is faith that lovingly moves the hand of God to do justice and great things for the benefit of his children. Hence, Christ is not interested in people believing in him for his prowess. He did not want the children of God to know that he was the Messiah because of his reputation, fame or ability to do extraordinary things. He himself had indicated that he who believed could move mountains and even raise the dead. His desire was not for people to believe in favors that he granted or in wonderful shows. Jesus wanted and wants people to have faith and that it doesn’t depend on anything external. That is why he exhorts the deaf and stuttering man not to tell anyone. But we should not limit this event to the physical plane. How many deaf and spiritual stutterers do not wander the world! Beings that do not want to hear the voice of the Lord in their lives or that pretend not to hear it because it is easier to live in the darkness of the absence of God and in the silence of our response to Him. There are also beings who have had their voice and do not have the will to speak and to do justice. They stutter, hesitate to do their Father's things. From this, liberation is needed. It is necessary to break with the chains that bind the human being to give the best possible response to our Father God. And this does not imply a miracle. Only a strong faith, intentional and firm in knowing that "nothing is impossible for God".

La petición de Jesús en guardar silencio en el evangelio de esta semana yace en conexión al concepto de los milagros. Un milagro es una gracia de Dios que se da como respuesta a la fe. Una fe sólida, consistente y verdadera no depende de milagros. Se manifiesta y se sostiene en su pureza de convencimiento y en su capacidad de perseverar. No se deja llevar por signos extraordinarios, teofanías o manifestaciones fuera de lo común, desafiando la ciencia, las expectativas humanas o la cultura local. Un regalo de Dios puede enriquecer la fe ya existente y el mismo se da como testimonio del poder del Señor. Pero esto no define a Dios, ni debería definir nuestra fe, nuestra respuesta a Dios mismo. Un milagro es el producto de la creencia incondicional en Dios y en su poder. Es la fe la que

amorosamente mueve la mano de Dios a hacer justicia y grandes cosas para el beneficio de sus hijos. De ahí que Cristo no está interesado en que la gente creyese

en él por sus proezas. No deseaba que los hijos de Dios supieran que él era el Mesías por su reputación, fama o capacidad de hacer cosas extraordinarias. Él mismo había indicado que aquel que creyese podía mover montañas y hasta resucitar muertos. Su deseo no era que la gente creyese por favores que concediera o espectáculos maravillosos. Jesús quería y quiere que la gente tenga fe y que la

misma no dependiese de nada. De ahí que exhorta al sordo y tartamudo que no se lo dijera a nadie. Pero no deberíamos limitar

este evento al plano físico. ¡Cuántos sordos y tartamudos espirituales no divagan por el mundo! Seres que no quieren escuchar la voz del Señor en sus vidas o que pretenden no escucharla porque es más fácil vivir en la oscuridad de la ausencia de Dios y en el silencio de nuestra respuesta a Él. También hay seres a quienes se les ha quitado la voz y no tienen la voluntad de hablar y de hacerse justicia. Tartamudean, titubean para hacer las cosas de su Padre. De esto se necesita liberación. Se necesita romper con las cadenas que atan al ser humano para dar la mejor respuesta posible a nuestro Padre Dios. Y esto no implica un milagro. Solo una fe fortalecida, intencional y firme en saber que “para Dios nada es imposible”.

Teaching Children How to P.R.A.Y.

“What should I pray for?” my six-year-old daughter, Jocelyn, leaned over and asked as we knelt down in the pew before Mass. Later that day, there seemed no better place to start than with Matthew 6:9-13, the words Jesus used when teaching his followers to pray. To help my daughter, and all children, better understand why Jesus chose the words he did in what is now called the Our Father, I broke the main elements of the prayer into the acronym PRAY.

P = Praise “Hallowed be your name …” (Matthew 6:9) As we reflect on all the wonders God does in the world, counting our own blessings as we do, our hearts swell with gratitude. Jesus knew that a thankful heart always draws us closer to God.

R = Repent “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors …” (Matthew 6:12) It’s only when we admit our sins to God and seek forgiveness that we’re washed clean, inspiring us to move back into the circle of his love. When we grant forgiveness to another, we mirror the same mercy God extends to us.

A = Ask “Give us today day our daily bread …” (Matthew 6:11) God is a God of lavish blessings. It brings Him great joy to shower us with far more than what we need, but only when it’s for our good. Therefore, we can ask for anything. God knows what is best for us and will always answer our prayers accordingly.

Y = You (Make yourself an action verb) “Your kingdom come, your will be done …” (Matthew 6:10) No matter our age, we all have the ability to create good in this world. Before ending our prayer time, we should listen for God’s promptings for how we are to serve. Whether it’s being kinder to our neighbor or resolving to visit the elderly, we can take action to fulfill Matthew 6:10 by helping to create God’s kingdom “on earth as it is in heaven.” (Fragments of article by Claire Mcgarry, published in Catechist, February 2020)

Enseñar a los Niños a Orar (P.R.A.Y.)

“¿Para que debo orar?” me preguntó mi hija, Jocelyn, de seis años, mientras arrodilladas en la banca antes de comenzar la misa. Más tarde el mismo día, me pareció apropiado comenzar con las palabras de Jesús en Mateo 6:9-13, las palabras con que enseñó a orar a sus seguidores. Para asistir a mi hija, y a todos los niños, en comprender mejor porque escogió Jesus estas palabras Jesús en lo que hoy conocemos como el Padre Nuestro, organice los elementos principales en el acrónimo PRAY.

P = Praise (Alabar) “Santificado sea tu nombre…” (Mateo 6:9) Mientras reflexionamos sobre todas las maravillas de Dios en el mundo, incluyendo nuestras propias bendiciones, nuestros corazones se llenan de gratitud. Jesús sabe que un corazón agradecido siempre nos acerca a Dios.

R = Repent (Arrepentimiento) “Perdona nuestros pecados, como perdonamos a los que nos ofenden…” (Mateo 6:12) Solo cuando admitimos a Dios nuestros pecados y buscamos su perdón somos hechos limpio, inspirados a regresar dentro del círculo de su amor. Cuando perdonamos a los demás, somos reflejo de la misericordia de Dios hacia nosotros.

A = Ask (Preguntar) “Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día…” (Mateo 6:11) Dios es un Dios de abundantes bendiciones. Se regocija en colmarnos con mucho más que lo que necesitamos, pero solo si es para nuestro bien. Desde luego, podemos pedir por lo que sea. Dios siempre sabe lo que más nos conviene y responderá a nuestras oraciones en consecuencia.

Y = You (Yo—Sea un verbo activo) “Venga a nosotros tu Reino, hágase tu voluntad…” (Mateo 6:10) Todos, sin importar la edad, tenemos la habilidad de crear el bien en la tierra. Antes de terminar nuestro tiempo de oración, debemos escuchar las impresiones de Dios sobre como debemos de servir. Ya sea siendo más cariñoso con el prójimo o resolviendo visitar al anciano, podemos tomar acción de realizar Mateo 6:10 ayudando así a crear su reino “en la tierra como en el cielo.” (Fragmentos de artículo por Claire Mcgarry, publicado en Catechist, febrero 2020)

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every other Wednesday in the Thiele Center from 10am to noon. This group knits and crochets prayer shawls while praying individually and as a group for the recipient of each shawl. These shawls represent a visible symbol of our prayers

and presence. Shawls have been given to those facing challenging times, illness or to celebrate a special moment to bring the comfort and warmth of God’s love and healing. For more information on how to request a prayer shawl please contact the parish office, 773-278-4808.

El Ministerio Mantas de Oración se reúne cada otro miércoles en el Centro Pastoral de 10am a medio día. Este grupo hace mantas de oración hechos de tejido o de ganchillo mientras rezan individualmente y como grupo para que el receptor de cada manta. Estas mantas representan un símbolo visible de nuestras oraciones y presencia. Las mantas se han dado a aquellos que enfrentan tiempos difíciles, enfermedad o para celebrar un momento especial para llevar el apoyo y la calidez del amor de Dios y la sanación.
