The small patch of the land of Jerusalem has been the crib for three of the most important monotheistic religions in the world. This enigmatic and Holy ground has nestled Judaism, Muslim, and Christianity in a space no bigger than downtown Chicago. The three traditions look towards this glorious city of Jerusalem. Besides politics, religion seems to be the source for the conflict. This conflict, hurt, and bloodshed is the result of believing that only one way is the only way to go to heaven, to reach the Divine, to go to God. When we think like this what we are doing is turning only to ourselves and denying that God can do wondrous things outside our own religious tradition. God is bigger than anything we can imagine! We must not limit the power of God. We forget that an action can be good and Godly without necessarily been performed by one who belongs to our religion. To believe that there is strictly one way to reach God is misguided and childish. Childish was the notion of the apostles in the Gospel as they complained because others were casting out demons in the name of Jesus. They witnessed an “outsider” doing a similar work to theirs and yet he was not part of their group. They considered him not licensed to preach and wanted to silence him. Jesus made it clear that all good comes from God and that doing good things is not restricted nor confined to a particular person specially if it was done in his name. Jesus rejects this club mentality as he reaffirms that God moves where he wills and chooses whom he wills. In this individualistic world and society it’s easy to fall into the error that we can only do good our way. Goodness in the world comes from God and not from men. Even within the Church this notion of exclusivity can be seen. We have all been witnesses of how unhealthy rivalry has affected the life in many parishes. And we see divisions among the different spiritualties in the assembly, the traditionalist, the moderates, and the liberals without comprehending that we are all the body of Christ. The Gospels tell us that any person of goodwill doing their best to follow Christ’s footsteps graces the world. Therefore downgrading the motives behind someone’s charitable gesture amounts to spiritual envy. As Catholic we must remember that the Lord Jesus, our Savior, did not only establish a simple community of disciples, but constituted the Church as a salvific mystery. We also believe that outside of the structure of the Church many elements can be found of sanctification and truth. This includes other religious traditions. Therefore without relativizing salvation we must see that at the long run we all work for the same boss. May God enable us to see that we are not working against each other, despite our religious traditions, but with Him. Where is goodness, you may ask? Goodness is where we give it and goodness is where we find it.

¿El pequeño pedazo de la tierra de Jerusalén ha sido cuna de tres de las religiones monoteístas más importantes del mundo. Esta tierra santa y enigmática ha enmarcado el judaísmo, el Islam y el cristianismo en un espacio no mayor que el centro de Chicago. Las tres tradiciones miran hacia esta gloriosa ciudad de Jerusalén. Además de la política, la religión parece ser la fuente del conflicto. Este conflicto, dolor y derramamiento de sangre es el resultado de creer que sólo un camino es el único camino para ir al cielo, alcanzar lo Divino, ir a Dios. Cuando pensamos así, lo que estamos haciendo es volvernos solo hacia nosotros mismos y negar que Dios puede hacer cosas maravillosas fuera de nuestra propia tradición religiosa. ¡Dios es más grande que cualquier cosa que podamos imaginar! No debemos limitar el poder de Dios. Olvidamos que una acción puede ser buena y piadosa sin que necesariamente la haya realizado alguien que pertenece a nuestra religión. Creer que hay una forma estricta de llegar a Dios es equivocado e infantil. Infantil era la noción de los apóstoles en el Evangelio

cuando se quejaban porque otros estaban echando demonios en el nombre de Jesús. Fueron testigos de un "extraño" que hacía un trabajo similar al de ellos y, sin embargo, él no era parte de su grupo. Lo consideraron sin licencia para predicar

y querían silenciarlo. Jesús dejó en claro que todo lo bueno proviene de Dios y que hacer cosas buenas no está restringido ni limitado a una persona en particular, especialmente si se hizo en su nombre. Jesús rechaza esta mentalidad de club al reafirmar que Dios se mueve donde quiere y elige a quien quiere. En este mundo y sociedad individualista, es fácil caer en el error de que sólo podemos hacer el bien a nuestra manera. La bondad en el mundo proviene de Dios y no de los hombres. Incluso dentro de la Iglesia se puede ver esta noción de exclusividad. Todos hemos sido testigos de como

la rivalidad insalubre ha afectado la vida en muchas parroquias. Y vemos divisiones entre las diferentes espiritualidades en la asamblea, los tradicionalistas, los moderados y los liberales, sin comprender que todos somos el

cuerpo de Cristo. Los Evangelios nos dicen que cualquier persona de buena voluntad que haga lo mejor para seguir los pasos de Cristo es honra en el mundo. Por lo tanto, la degradación de los motivos detrás del gesto de caridad de alguien equivale a una envidia espiritual. Como católicos debemos recordar que el Señor Jesús, nuestro Salvador, no sólo estableció una simple comunidad de discípulos, sino que constituyó la Iglesia como un misterio salvífico. También creemos que fuera de la estructura de la Iglesia se pueden encontrar muchos elementos de santificación y verdad. Esto incluye otras tradiciones religiosas. Por lo tanto, sin relativizar la salvación, debemos ver que a la larga todos trabajamos para el mismo jefe. Que Dios nos permita ver que no estamos trabajando unos contra otros, a pesar de nuestras tradiciones religiosas, sino con Él. ¿Dónde está la bondad, puedes preguntar? La bondad es donde la damos y la bondad es donde la encontramos.

This Catechetical Corner is devoted to presenting to you one of our four catechists for this year: Martha is a twenty-year veteran with the Chicago Police Department, with a Master’s in Specialization in Forensic Psychology. She is a part-time Mental Health Therapist and also does security part-time at Senn. High School. She has contributed her charitability by working with Cornerstone (homeless center) and with Lutheran Social Services providing over 700 hours of counseling. Martha has taught Catechism in the past and has currently volunteered to serve as a Catechist for the second year of Communion for the present year.

Este Rincón Catequético es dedicada a presentarles a una de nuestras cuatro catequistas para este año: Martha es una veterana de 20 años con el Departamento de la Policía de Chicago, con una Maestría en Especialización en Psicología Forense. Ella es una Terapeuta de Salud Mental a tiempo parcial, y también trabaja como Seguridad a tiempo parcial en la Escuela Secundaria Senn. Ella ha contribuido su tiempo caritativa trabajando con Cornerstone (centro de personas sin hogar) y proveyendo más de 700 horas de asesoría con Lutheran Social Services. Other beloved ones can be remembered during weekday mass. We will be accepting registrations until October 28.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Wednesday in the Thiele Center from 10am to noon. This group knits and crochets prayer shawls while praying individually and as a group for

the recipient of each shawl. These shawls represent a visible symbol of our prayers and presence. Shawls have been given to those facing challenging times, illness or to celebrate a special moment to bring the comfort and warmth of God’s love and healing. For more information on how to request a prayer shawl please contact the parish office, 773-278-4808. El Ministerio Mantas de Oración se reúne todos los miércoles en el Centro Pastoral de 10am a medio día. Este grupo hace mantas de oración hechos de tejido o de ganchillo mientras rezan individualmente y como grupo para que el receptor de cada manta. Estas mantas representan un símbolo visible de nuestras oraciones y presencia. Las mantas se han dado a aquellos que enfrentan tiempos difíciles, enfermedad o para celebrar un momento especial para llevar el apoyo y la calidez del amor de Dios y la sanación.
