“SAINT ANDREW’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH PRESENTS”

DR. SEAN KIM ON JUNE 28

The second lecture in “Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church Presents” series will be by Dr. Sean Kim as he continues his series on “The Great Cities of Asia.” The subject of the second lecture will be Seoul — with a metropolitan population of over 25 million, home of the fourth largest economy in the world and many other accolades. This is a city that is near and dear to Sean’s heart. It is his birthplace and home for his very young years until he and his parents immigrated to the

United States. He has also returned three times to visit his birthplace and family still in Korea. As a sidelight, Dr. Kim will also delve into his family tree of the ruling clans of Korea which goes back to early in the 13

th century.

Harvard educated, Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Central Missouri University, and a member of Saint Andrew’s, we can be assured that he will give us his usual, delightful lecture. For those of you with hearing problems, we will have the headset wireless microphone in place this time. It is hoped that the sound will now be a problem of the past. Join us for the second “Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church Presents” lecture which will be on Friday, June 28 at 1:30 in The Chapel of the Epiphany. Be sure to feel free to invite your friends also to come and hear Sean’s lecture.

SPRING PIANO CONCERT FEATURING GRACE KOHAN STUDENTS

Enjoy a wide variety of music, from classical to contemporary, at the Spring Piano Concert presented by the piano students of Grace Kohan. Students ages 7-13 will be performing special selections at varying degrees of difficulty, and they look forward to mingling with everyone at the reception following the performance. You won’t want to miss these delightful performances! Please join us at 2:00

on Sunday, June 2, in the Madison Living Room.

In 2010, Chuck Adkins married Vicky Vaughan and the two internationally known and respected recording/performing artists then combined their musical talents and years of experience as entertainers to form “Cool Breeze”. With a refreshingly clean sound that spans a variety of genres and eras, Chuck and Vicky delight audiences with their easy-listening style and talent in every setting. This fun, spirited concert will be performed at 3:00 on Friday, June 21, in the Madison Living Room.

“COOL BREEZE” IS BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

Vacations are restorative and helpful and enjoyable. When we reminisce about vacations that were special, we realize that the experience may have lasted just a few days, but the memories live on and on. Sometimes we can close our eyes and transport ourselves to the beauty of the mountains or the thrill of a sporting event or the peacefulness of a sunset over the water. It is important for people to take breaks from everyday routines and to have regular fun in their lives in order to maintain balance. Well, that’s a great idea, but what if time or money or health conditions don’t make a trip a very viable option? Perhaps a “staycation” might work in that case. A staycation means not going anywhere but taking a break from the regularity that guides our daily lives. Ideas for a staycation are unending: Invite some friends over for light refreshments and play board games; read a humorous book or try a book of poetry for a change; sleep late or get up early to watch the sunrise or make a point of watching the sunset; eat something scrumptious that you usually avoid; exercise or dance to a video; learn a new skill (the youngsters you know could teach you how to text); visit tourist destinations in our own community, such as the Truman Library, Kauffman Gardens, the World War I Museum, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. How about a visit to the zoo or to a park or to an outdoor theater? Spend an afternoon at the library, browsing and enjoying all the displays. There are many, many ways to get away without getting away. And these memories will last for a long time, too. But, make sure that you remember that you are “on vacation.” What a great excuse to be lazy! The idea is to take a break from the norm and have fun. It will restore your spirits and leave you feeling refreshed. And you can contribute the money you saved to a charity of your choice!

— Chaplain Linda Yeager

SPRING BIBLE STUDY WITH CHAPLAIN LINDA

Why in the world do we need four gospels in the Bible to tell one story? Who decided which gospels would be included? And why don’t they agree on all points? These are just a few of the questions that we have been addressing in our spring Bible study concerning a comparison of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The final two sessions will be held at 1:30 on Friday, June 7, and Friday, June 14, in the Westport Room, and will be facilitated by Chaplain Linda.

ALTAR GUILD SERVES BISHOP SPENCER PLACE

www.BishopSpencerPlace.org 9

When we think about hospitality and welcome in our chapel, we usually speak of greeters meeting us, smiling warmly, and handing us a bulletin. But, those smiling faces have another ministry of hospitality that they exercise long before anyone walks into the chapel for the celebration of the liturgy. These smiling faces belong to members of Bishop Spencer Place’s Altar Guild. Their duty is to prepare all things necessary for the celebration of the Eucharist or any other service. The work of an altar guild is a ministry, a gift of time and talent to serve God, and it is also a privilege to serve God in this way. Preparing the altar, washing the linens, polishing the brass, and folding the programs are just a few of the ways that these dedicated women serve. Current members of the BSP Altar Guild include Carol Owen, Harriett Kokjer, Molly Bean, Joan Zoller, Ferne Welles, Sally Chapple, Bonnie Lowrey, Katie Vogel, and Tommye Dodd. These dedicated women carry out their ministry under the direction of Chaplain Linda Yeager. If you want to know all the people who have served on the BSP Altar Guild, you can find their names on a new plaque that was given to the chapel by Dr. David and The Rev. Joan Zoller. It hangs just inside the chapel, on the left. New members are always welcomed. If you are interested in being part of this valuable and meaningful ministry, please tell one of the BSP Altar Guild members or Chaplain Linda.

“NOSTALGIA LIVE” TO TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

Come join us for a musical revue evoking memories through songs from the 1920s to the present, featuring two singers — Don Estes and Norman Begin — who will perform Broadway show songs and old standards as they take us on a trip down memory lane. Estes and Begin performed in New York theater and toured for 15 years in such shows as 1776, The Student Prince, How to Succeed in Business, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and West Side Story. Stars they have appeared

with include John Cullum, Jane Powell, Dorothy Collins, Ray Walston and Constance Towers. You won’t want to miss this blast from the past at 2:30 on Monday, June 10, in the Madison Living Room.

REMINDER— If you haven’t already done so, please review the photo release request letter and

form sent to you from Mendi Hanna, Director of Marketing. We would love to have your signature and approval to utilize photos of you taken at community events! If you do not have the release form, you can find additional copies at the Madison and Jefferson concierge desks. Thank you!

BSP WELCOMES RENOWNED PIANIST & FLUTIST FOR SPECIAL RECITAL

We are fortunate to have two renowned musicians entertaining us this month! Flutist Mary Holzhausen and pianist Kairy Koshoeva will be performing at 3:00 on Monday, June 24, in the Madison Living Room.

Mary Holzhausen, flute, has appeared as a soloist in venues across North America and Europe. In addition to her solo work, she is principal flutist in the Kinnor Philharmonic of Kansas City and a member of several chamber ensembles. As a teacher, Mary serves on the faculty of the Village Music Academy, teaching both flute and piano and serving as the Director of the Chamber Music Institute. Mary received her Doctoral of Musical Art in Flute Performance at the UMKC Conservatory of Music in May 2006, and received her Master’s in Flute Performance at Wichita State University.

Kairy Koshoeva, piano, has received the top awards at several national and international competitions, and she has performed in recitals and as a soloist in nine different countries, including Russia, France, Italy and Germany. In September 2003, she was invited to perform at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow as guest of the Kyrgyzstan government, and she was also named Honored Artist of Kyrgyzstan — one of the highest distinctions awarded in her native land. Kairy received her Doctoral of Musical Art in Piano Performance at the UMKC Conservatory of Music, and her teaching experience includes Avila University, Park University and Rockhurst.

SARAH DION BROOKS RETURNS TO BSP

Sarah Dion Brooks is back with her upbeat style of classic musical entertainment. A master entertainer covering a host of genres, Sarah enjoys a wide fan base and gives a great performance. You won’t want to miss her encore! Please join us at 3:00 on Tuesday, June 4, in the Madison Living Room.

NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS: LES MISERABLES

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever. Join us for the BSP “Night at the Movies” special presentation of the 2012 screen adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. This star-studded movie garnered three Academy Awards — including one for Best Actress in a Supporting Role — and many other awards and nominations. We look forward to seeing you “at the movies” at 7:00

on Monday, June 10, in the Westport Room!
