Frequently asked questions

CAR RENTAL THEFT AND DAMAGE INSURANCE

Q Is injury or damage to other vehicles or property covered?

A Damage to other vehicles or property and injury is not covered. If you hit another vehicle or object, the insurer would only pay for the damage to your rental vehicle and no other damages. Please discuss Liability and Bodily Injury coverage needs with the rental agency or your personal insurer.

Q Who may drive the rental vehicle?

A Provided the car rental was fully paid for using your American Express Government Travel Card and you decline the LDW (or other similar insurance) offered by the rental agency, then you, the Cardmember, or any fellow Government of Canada employee or anyone else you permit to drive, may drive the vehicle. However, all drivers must otherwise qualify under and follow the terms of the rental contract and must be legally licensed and permitted to drive the rental car under the laws of the jurisdiction in which the rental car shall be used.

Q Is the Car Rental Theft and Damage coverage worldwide?

A The coverage is worldwide where allowed by law. Certain laws prevent our coverage from applying in various places, and these places change all the time. Please contact your rental agency or travel agent to determine if this coverage will be accepted.

CAR RENTAL THEFT AND DAMAGE INSURANCE (continued)

Q Is there an age limitation on drivers?

A There is no age limitation on drivers. However, all drivers must qualify under and follow the terms of the rental contract and must be legally licensed and permitted to drive the rental car under the laws of the jurisdiction in which the rental car shall be used.

Q How long may I rent a car (or cars) for and be covered?

A You can rent a car for forty-eight (48) consecutive days and be covered. The insurance covers you if your rental contract or rental contracts (back to back rentals), do not exceed 48 consecutive days in total. If you need rental cars for a longer period of time than 48 consecutive days, you will need to purchase all your coverage from the rental agency. This policy will not cover these extended rentals.

Q Will I be covered if I drop off one vehicle in Montreal, fly to Vancouver and pick up a second vehicle the same day?

A Yes, you will be covered. The two rentals would not be considered consecutive since they are in substantially different locations.

Q Is the Car Rental Theft and Damage coverage worldwide?

A The coverage is worldwide where allowed by law. Certain laws prevent our coverage from applying in various places, and these places change all the time. Please contact your rental agency or travel agent to determine if this coverage will be accepted.

In no event, however, shall we pay more than $2,000 Canadian in total per occurrence.

Frequently asked questions

TRAVEL ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Q Are chartered air flights covered under my TAI?

A While chartered flights can be covered as “Common Carrier” in the policy there are two exclusions that limit the types of chartered flights covered. There would be no coverage when a covered person flies on a non-scheduled licensed common carrier hired by a single organization. A chartered flight will only be covered as long as it is a regularly scheduled flight, the provider is licensed to carry passengers, and the aircraft is not owned, leased or hired by a single organization or sponsoring organization.

Q I have a central billing account for airline charges and would like to purchase a ticket for a contract employee. Would they be covered for the $500,000 TAI coverage?

A Contract employees and volunteers (for example, Red Cross or United Way) are considered employees or authorized travellers and as such they are covered under the Policy.

Q What if I take a business trip, extend my trip for a few days vacation and return home. If an accident happened on my trip home, am I covered?

A Only the business related portion of the trip is covered. Coverage is not extended to any personal side trips before, during, or after the business trip.
