  • The

    Annual

    Surface Print Design Competition

  • i-dott CIO

Since i-dott was founded as a charity in 2013, well over 3,000 artworks have been submitted to our annual surface pattern design competition

giving students from around the world the unique opportunity of having their work appraised, critiqued and judged by senior industry design

    professionals.

Our competition also gives them the opportunity to put their work directly in front of the wallpaper and textile industries’ decision makers; CEO’s,

Managing & Studio Directors and Studio Managers.

Each year we have new colleges and universities entering the competition and several of our past students have found positions within our

industries as a direct result of entering the competition which proves that it does work - bringing universities, colleges, students and industry closer

together can only result in good things for all.

    The Competition

The competition is at the heart of the charity and is and will always remain, our priority.

We have built strong relationships with a good number of universities and colleges around Europe who have returned to the competition year on

year and each year the number of entries increase markedly.

Our aim is to connect with Academia around the world to offer surface pattern design students everywhere the opportunity of meeting the

world of work through our competition.

The competition is devise to give students an experience of what it could be required of them when employed in a real-life

    design studio working environment.

The competition consists of 4 design categories and students are invited to enter one or all of the categories providing they follow the rules of

    the competition.

    The student will need to

    • create work/s which answer the design brief

    • create work/s that fit into the chosen dimensions as laid out in the technical brief

    • understand the importance of assigning copyright and protecting intellectual property

    • produce digital imagery which is a true representation of the artwork/s and are of dimensions as stated in order to create room-shots,

    marketing, advertising and publishing material

  • Judging – fair and square

To ensure that all entries are judged on merit alone the artworks have any and all identification removed.

In fact the only piece of information the judges have to identify the work is the time limited copyright number which is assigned at registration

    upon arrival at our offices.

This number is also the copyright number by which i-dott claims ownership of the design for the limited time period as set out on the copyright

    document.

Both judging panels are totally unaware of:

    • The establishment the student attends

    • The sex of the student

    • The ethnic origin of the student

    • The age of the student

o First RoundThis panel of four senior design professionals have a window of 5 working days to review the works digitally and select a percentage of designs

from each of the 4 categories.

By using digital format for this round enables us to work with senior design people from around the globe without interrupting their very busy work

schedules too much. It also means a much wider audience is seeing all of the entries.

The students who are shortlisted at this stage are informed by e-mail and given a certificate as a record of their achievement.

o Round TwoThis panel of 4 judges is made up of representatives appointed by the design category sponsors.

All the designs selected by our first panel are retrieved, sorted into the relevant categories and put before the second panel of judges.

This is done face to face around the table; the panel comes together to discuss and critique the merits of the works and whether or not the work

meets the criteria set out in the competition terms and conditions.

As each category is judged, the judge appointed by the sponsor will take the lead role in the decision making in the event of any dispute.

The winning students are informed, sent a certificate and invited to join the trustees and receive their awards at the Gala Dinner held in the

    October of each year.

The evening gives the student the opportunity to speak directly with company owners, decision makers and senior managers from the surface

print industry from around the world.

Students’ WorkThe Copyright of all the designs entered into the competition is transferred, for a time limited period, to the charity. We offer these designs for

sale to our members and then to the wider surface print industry.

The category sponsors will have the opportunity to purchase designs before going for sale to the membership.

The proceeds of any sale is split equally between the student and the charity.

  • Design Category Prizes

The prizes in each category is £500.00 for 1st place, £300.00 for 2nd place and £200.00 for 3rd place. In addition each student receive a ‘goody

bag’, contents vary year to year.

    Other Prizes

    The Masterpiece Prize

A prize sponsored by the IGI (global Wallpaper Association) and is awarded to the student who has, in the opinion of the sitting President of the

IGI created the most outstanding piece of work. This prize is paid in sterling to the equivalent of 1000€
