The Armed Forces’ Christian Union (AFCU) The AFCU is an all-ranks, tri-service prayer union. We are Christians who wish to grow in our faith, have fellowship with one another and share it with those with whom we serve. Tracing our origins back to a call to prayer for the spiritual wellbeing of the Army in 1851, prayer is still our 'basis and bond'. Membership of the AFCU Anyone who believes in prayer to God through our Lord Jesus Christ, and who is willing to pray regularly for the spiritual welfare of the Armed Forces, is welcome as a member. Those serving as a Regular or Reservist in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army or Royal Air Force join as serving members. Serving membership is also open to officer cadets and recruits under training, while those serving in foreign armed forces are welcomed under our non-serving membership.

Non-serving membership is open to retired members of HM Forces and all others who have a concern for the spiritual well-being of Service personnel and their families. Our AFCU Prayer Support Team (PST) prays regularly in groups, couples or even individually throughout the UK and overseas for specific serving members and their families, as well as for the needs of the AFCU, overseas military Christian fellowships and for AFCU missionary partners. Serving members need to ask to be linked to the PST for this type of regular, confidential intercessory prayer.

What members receive In addition to prayer, serving members receive two copies of the AFCU magazine ‘Contact’ (one to give away!), and, other than an initial hard copy, receive electronic copies of the AFCU newsletter Dispatches, which gives news of members, details of AFCU activities, teaching material, and the AFCU Prayer Diary. This literature is designed to encourage prayer for individuals and the Services in general. If you would prefer to receive all the literature in hard copy, we will be pleased to arrange this for you. The AFCU staff endeavour to visit serving members whenever possible. Finance The Union is financed by voluntary contributions; there is no fixed subscription. Members are invited to contribute what they wish towards the cost of running the Union. Gift Aid donations are tax efficient, and money can be paid regularly by banker’s order. As a rough guide, it costs us about £100 a year per member to run the Union, and a gift-aided standing order of £7 per month would cover those costs.

Spouses of Serving Personnel It is an advantage to join the Union as an non-serving member in your own right to enable you to keep in touch with AFCU activities. Electronic mailings will automatically be sent to both email addresses, and a hard copy of the mailing may also be obtained (for those who prefer to receive it in this form) during a deployment.
