THE
EAST INDIA MARINE
ASSOCIATES i .
Founded 1981
‘Tur East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Mu-
seum of Salem assembled for their first Annual Dinner on
Thursday, May 26, 1983, in East India Marine Hall. With
echoes of similar gatherings of harmony and conviviality
in a different century of the Museum’s historic past, this
memorable occasion marked the beginning of a series of
annual affairs in recognition of the Marine Associates and
their vital role in furthering the goals and aspirations of
the Museum.
Augustus P. (“Gus”) Loring, “The Practical Naviga-
tor,” was honored by family, friends, and Trustees and
Staff of the Museum for three decades of service as a
Trustee. During his stewardship for twelve years as Presi-
dent of the Board, ending on May 7 of this year with his
retirement, the Peabody Museum prospered in a fashion
not unlike the fortunes of members of the East India Ma-
rine Society in Salem’s first “golden age.” May we indulge
in the hope that it will always be so.
“May each mariner record,
so that Enterprise may discover.”

PREFACE
=e
‘Duis snooker has been prepared in recognition and ap- preciation of the interest and loyal support of the members of the East India Marine Associates. It contains sections from the catalogue of the Salem East India Marine Society, first printed in 1821, making it one of the earliest museum catalogues in the United States.
One hundred years after the founding of the East India Marine Society, at the centennial anniversary meeting in 1899, only twenty-one full members were still living. None- theless the commitment of a dedicated group to share re- sponsibility for the care and supervision of the Museum was no less essential then than it is now or at the time of the Museum’s founding in 1799. It was the grasping of an op- portunity provided by virtue of their profession that en- couraged those captain founders to establish a museum when even the idea of such an institution was not yet fully formed in social consciousness.
And the embers from that glorious era still glow. For almost two centuries the collections in the Peabody Museum have made it an international center for educational pro- grams and for scholarly maritime, natural history and ethnological research. Today, with a new building and many handsome additions to its collections, the Museum is
more than ever a vital link to our country’s and New En- eland’s maritime past and present.
To help preserve that link the East India Marine Asso- ciates was established in 1981 to perpetuate the high stan- dards of leadership and support necessary for the de- velopment of the Museum. As a group of special friends and benefactors, East India Marine Associates are bridging
pale
the past with the future through their devotion and gener- ous assistance. They can continue to fulfill the hope ex- pressed by former Museum officer John Robinson as he closed his report to the members at the centennial meeting in 1899:
May we indulge in the hope that the present develop-
ment of the Museum shall not rest here, but that a
greater usefulness may be made possible for it by such
additions to the funds now available in the hands of
the Trustees, so that collections may still be further
increased and ample accommodations provided for
them.

INTRODUCTION
CS
‘Tur Savem East Inpia Marine Society is com- posed of persons who have actually navigated the seas be- yond the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn, as masters or supercargoes of vessels belonging to Salem. It was founded in October 1799, and obtained an Act of Incorporation in 1801.
The chief objects of this institution are — First, To assist the widows and children of deceased
members, who may need it, from the income of the funds of the Society, which at present amount to nearly seven thou- sand dollars, obtained from the fees of admission and the
annual assessments. Second, ‘To collect such facts and observations as tend
to the improvement and security of navigation. For this purpose, every member, bound to sea, is authorized to re- ceive from the Society, a blank journal, in which he is to
insert all things worthy of notice which occur during his voyage, and upon his return it is to be deposited with the So- ciety. These journals are afterwards bound in volumes, each containing ten numbers, with an index, by the Inspector.
Third, To form a Museum of natural and artificial
curiosities, particularly such as are to be found beyond the
Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. This object has been obtained to a considerable extent, chiefly by the voluntary donations of the members as well as of others friendly to the institution; and the whole collection is placed in the Hall where the Society holds its meetings.
How far the Society has fulfilled the expectations of its founders, can partly be seen by the catalogues and state- ments subjoined. ‘Though much has been accomplished, it
[3 ]
is hoped, from the late accession of a great number of young and active members, that more will be done to increase our
nautical knowledge, and to render the Museum a still greater object of attention to the man of science.
Salem, Nov. 26, 1821.
