Dues, Snooze, Looz

Hello Ashland BPOE #944 Members!!

If you notice, about this time each year your dues at old #944 and your Federal

taxes become due. BPOE dues are due and payable by April 1 each year (by man-

date of the Grand Lodge) and the Grand Lodge portion must be sent to the Grand

Lodge on that date.

So, on April 1 of each year our secretary, Steve Booth, must send the dues for

ALL 800 + members of #944 to Grand Lodge. Thus the unhappy, mournful look

on Steve's face because only about 300+ of us have paid our dues by April Fool’s

Day! This results in a severe defi cit in the bankroll of 944. In the neighborhood of

$10,000.........Ouch.

So what's the answer?? You will receive your bill for dues for the 2013 fi scal year in

March AND THEY ARE DUE AND PAYABLE BY APRIL FIRST. Please keep Steve happy

and pay your dues on time.

ELKS CARE-----ELKS SHARE-----Do you care enough to pay on time?

at the Lodge meeting when their name was drawn:

ER’s Message

This is the penultimate month for me as your Exalted Ruler. I will save next

month’s article for reminiscing, as there is a lot to talk about that just happened,

and is about to happen at the Lodge!

As I write this, I am still recovering from the cold/fl u/whatever that hit me and

so many of us after the Chili Cook-Off , but that did not hamper my enjoyment

at the event. We had an excellent turnout of fi refi ghters. And lots of good chili

to share. Polly did a great job organizing and keeping the evening running, and

Hamfi st was a lot of fun to listen to! My thanks go out to all the volunteers who

made this event possible!

This was followed by the O.S.E.A. Presidential visit to the Southwest district at

our Lodge. Again, we had an amazing crew of volunteers to make this event hap-

pen. (Pictures and thanks in the next bulletin.) I think Kay and Mike had a enjoy-

able day with some wine tasting at 2 Hawk Winery. (This is a gorgeous tasting

room, made of recycled material from all over the Rogue Valley. If you have not

seen it, you should really check it out.) This was followed of course by the dinner

for the District and State Elks. Although I was disappointed in the turnout from the

other Lodges in the district, Ashland was very well represented by all the offi cers

who did not already have the crud, and a lot of members who came out to sup-

port Kay and the Lodge for this important event.

Dinner was followed by an auction of a beautiful wooden intarsia elk head

made by Fred Hatfi eld, PER. The Ashland offi cers and some members chipped in

to raise enough money to win this auction, and this sculpture will be hanging in

the Lodge in a place of honor. Then we gave Kay & Mike and Bill & Sharon James

some gifts from the District. The traditional Southwest District gift is a myrtlewood

clock, and Bill & Sharon received a small one, and Kay received a president sized

one! This was no surprise to Kay who has seen this gift given year after year, but

she was still looking forward to receiving it. What was a surprise to Kay was the

other sculpture that Fred made. This was another wooden intarsia piece, but this

time it was a giant reproduction of the pin that Kay designed for her year as Presi-

dent. I think she was actually speechless with surprise at this extra special eff ort

from Fred for the Ashland Lodge. (See image below.) No Turning Back entertained

us the rest of the evening, making this a truly successful visit. As always, we had

great compliments from District and State attendees.

That brings me up to the present, and February also has some important

events as you will see in this bulletin. The fi rst and second nominations of offi cers

are coming up in the next two weeks. We are still searching for a couple of posi-

tions, so if you have any interest at all in what it means to be an offi cer, contact me

or Aaren. (Our numbers are listed on page 2.) PER/Old Timers night will be on the

13th. This is a fun meeting to attend, as it is all done by previous Exalted Rulers. Be-

fore the meeting is a free Prime Rib dinner at 5:30 p.m. Come on out to the Lodge,

and if you are friends with any of the pin-worthy Elks listed to the right of this ar-

ticle, encourage them to come down to the Lodge, maybe even off er them a ride.

February 16th is the Sweethearts, Friends and Lovers Ball & Awards Ceremony.

I will get to recognize some great members with the Elk of the Year, Offi cer of

the Year, and Citizen of the Year awards. Jim is cooking dinner and best of all his

famous Strawberry Seduction Dessert! After the awards, Robbie DaCosta will play

music for a night of dancing and fun. Get your reservation in for this event.

As always, I want to thank all of the members who have made these events pos-

sible. We are a volunteer organization, and I am constantly proud and impressed

at how well our Lodge performs. If you have been any part of these events, either

as a participant, or a volunteer of any kind, you should also be proud. If not, then I

urge you to make an eff ort to do whatever you can, at whatever your ability, to be

a contributor to this amazing group.

Fraternally,

Michael Golden

Old Timers Awards List

Please come Wednesday, February 13th and enjoy a FREE Prime Rib Dinner at 5:30

p.m. ALL Elks invited. Join us for Lodge at 7:30 p.m. run by PERs. Longevity pins

will be awarded. Our heartiest congratulations to the following:

The Happy Corner

At our January 9th meeting Ron Corallo’s name was drawn for our

Big Kitty and, since he was present, Ron is now $170.00 richer!

Where is the Love? As Elks, we love our communities. Instead of sending val-

entines, we show our communities we love them by meeting

local needs. That’s why so many Lodges work to meet the Na-

tional President’s per-member-giving goal of $4.50 to qualify for

a $2,000 Elks National Foundation Gratitude Grant. Lodges use these grants to

serve their communities in many ways.

Look at Boulder, Colo., Lodge No. 566, which used its ENF Gratitude Grant to

support local veterans. The Lodge supplies veterans in need with necessities, en-

tertainment items and more.

“Our Gratitude Grant gives the Boulder Elks an opportunity to help community

members in need,” says Project Manager James Luckow. “There is never enough

we can do to repay our veterans for their sacrifi ces, but with the help of our ENF

grant, we’ve made their lives a little easier.”

This Valentine’s day, let’s show our community how much we love it. How can

our Lodge use ENF Community Investments Program grants like the Gratitude

Grant to meet local needs? Visit www.elks.org/enf/community for complete de-

tails on the ENF Community Investments Program.

The Elks National Foundation helps Elks build stronger communities through

programs that support youth, honor veterans, and meet needs in areas where Elks

live and work. For more information on the ENF, visit www.elks.org/enf.

Chili Cook-OffThe Chili Cook off was once again a huge success. Over 100 people came down to show their support of the Firefi ghters and the Lodge. We had 11 Chilis entered into

the contest this year. More than 20 Firefi ghters and their families attended. The band was wonderful as always. (People even DANCED!) It was just a great night. A

basketful of thank you’s to all for coming and to all you Chili cookers. Congratulations to Mary Danca, Jim Marston and Linda Goldfarb for their winning concoctions.

I’d like to especially thank the servers and cooks, cashiers and bussers: Jim Potter, Mary Cooper, Michael Bates, Michael Golden, Leslee Freeman, Mary Danca, Christina

Dunlap, Gary Johnston and Victoria Lane, Pat Stonier, Linda Goldfarb, Cameron Hanson, Joe and Barbara Judy, Ron Corallo, Karen Wellburn, Diane Bennett, Jim Marston,

Martin Williams and Pam Crowley. And of course Maria Baptiste, April Carrington, and Kathy Price for busting their tails off . Patrick, thank you for taking all those great

photos. HAMFIST: YOU ARE AWESOME! Thank you and see you next year!

Polly Stonier, Tiler

New Year’s Eve GratitudeMany thanks to all the members and volunteers who helped make our New Year’s Eve Party a success. The morning crew did a fantastic job of decorating and the

evening crew did a terrifi c job of making sure guests...all 160 of them...were welcomed at the door, off ered raffl e tickets throughout the night and served food quickly

and effi ciently. My volunteer list seems smaller than the number of people who made this a success. If I have missed anyone, my sincere apologies to you. I still thank

you in my heart...please let me know and I will note it in the next bulletin. Those who supported the event with their volunteer time are (in no special order): Michael

Golden (well, he is always fi rst on my list), Charlie Eien, Susan Dallas, Wayne and Elaine Hamlin, Berniece Monning, Wendy Adams, Rhonda Brustol, Mark and Peggy

Severson, Julia, Tom and Andrew Woosnam, Paul Gleason, Pat and Michael Bates, Jim Marston, Cameron Hanson, Scott Hall, Suzanne Haveman, Sharon Manfre, Victoria

Wade, Fred and Debi Hatfi eld, Jeannette McCartney, Howdy and Debbie Miller, Hal Bishop...I just know I am missing someone....sorry and thank you all again for your

hard work and commitment to our Lodge. Special thanks to Jim Potter, his cooking crew: Jim Marston and Garrett Johnston, his waitresses from Rooster’s Restaurant,

to our dishwasher Scott, and bartenders April, Kathy and Morgan. My thanks also go to Ashland Scout Troop 112 for helping with dinner!

Veterans’ Activities ReportThanks to Polly’s dedication, our volunteers, and generous supportive members

and friends at the Annual Wine and Silent Auction, we are able to provide our

local Veterans at (VA) Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics anoth-

er year of social activities. We also stocked the infi rmary cart with personal care

items, more than I ever thought we could provide.

We closed 2012 by donating over $800 in quality Christmas gifts from babies up

to teens to SORCC families and hosted a Christmas lunch with gifts for the lady

residents, who were delighted to be at our Lodge.

On January 4, 2013 we started the year with a Happy New Years Lunch for HUD

VASH veterans (HUD Assisted Services Housing) at our Lodge - complete with

beautiful holiday decorations. Two weeks later, on January 15th we sponsored a

lunch at Roosters for the Activity Exploration Class from the VA. Lunch was great

and we all enjoyed the day.

Coming up in February we will host a lunch for the PRRC (Psycho-Social Rehabili-

tation and Recovery Center) program. We will need six volunteers to help serve

on Friday, February 22. This is a rare sit -down meal for the men. Following the

luncheon, SORCC staff will present awards to the attendees. This is a very nice

event and as always, the veterans are grateful for our support.

Coming up later in the season: Lunch for the ladies in February, Jet boat excur-

sions for both men and women this Summer and other fun events. I will keep you

posted as more activities materialize.

Thank you to our members who have graciously spent time with the Veterans

during our activities. It means a lot to both the men and the women to have

people take an interest in them, listen to their stories and learn about their lives.

We all appreciate being liked and cared for, and Veterans appreciate the social

interactions. Self worth is a giant step in each Veteran’s recovery and these events

help their ability to interact and move on in life.

Please contact me if you are interested in participating in upcoming events. You

will benefi t as much from the experience as our Veterans appreciate your support.

On top of that, you will have a fun and interesting time.

Lodge Hosts Scholarship InterviewsOn Saturday, January 5, 2013 the Lodge’s Scholarship Committee hosted inter-

views for the annual scholarship competition. This competition is open to all se-

nior students at Ashland High School and Phoenix High School. The competition

is based on several factors, including fi nancial need, grade point average, extra-

curricular activities, demonstrated leadership and an essay. The fi nal stage of the

process is the interview panel, which was conducted by Lodge members Tim Mc-

Cartney, Joan Becich, Larry Christensen, Mike Ainsworth and Tighe O’Meara.

This year we had 22 applicants apply for the scholarships, all from Ashland High

School. After initial scoring by scholarship committee chairperson Barbara Chris-

tensen, the top three boys and the top three girls moved on to the interview stage

held on the 5th of January at the Lodge.

The interviews allowed members of the panel to ask questions of the applicants

concerning their plans for the future, and what has been their most important ac-

complishment in high school, along with other questions.

After the interviews were completed, scores from all of the members of the panel

were tallied and the six fi nalists were ranked for a fi nal standing. After scoring, the

boys were ranked as: 1st place Alexander Sukles; 2nd place William Crowley; and

3rd place Niilo Snyder. The fi nalist girls were ranked as: 1st place Isabel Whitcomb;

2nd place Theanah Hannon; and 3rd place Kasey Baker. Each of these very impres-

sive young people will be awarded a scholarship from the Lodge.

Alexander Sukles and Isabel Whitcomb will move on the Elks’ district competition

in Coos Bay, and from there (hopefully) on to state and national competition. The

further Alexander and Isabel can make it through the district, state and national

competition, the more money they will be awarded to go toward college.

The Lodge will host an awards ceremony for the six fi nalists on February 27th at

6 p.m. Please plan on arriving for dinner a bit early to congratulate them all, and

wish all of the scholarship applicants good luck.

Initiation Night...featuring Dinner! Each month on Initiation night, for just $7, we are serving

dinner at 6:15 p.m. before the meeting. Come out and have

dinner, and then come to see the initiation of our newest

members!

These dinners are cooked, served and cleaned up by an all

-volunteer staff . If you would like to help, please call Fred

Hatfi eld. 541.601.5002

Friday Night Dinner MusicAs some of you may have already experienced, we have had a special guest

for some of our Friday dinners. Scott Morris Salterman has been kind enough to

come and play our piano during dinner, and I expect he will be coming back in

the future. He is incredibly talented, and a pleasure to listen to. He does not have

a regular schedule with us, but I expect to have him over for dinner frequently.

If you know of any other musicians who would be willing to come play during

dinner for tips and a meal, please have them contact me.

Our Lapsed MembersCome Back...We Need You!I urge all of those members who have not yet paid

their 2012 dues to contact the offi ce to arrange pay-

ment as soon as possible.

Lapsed members hurt our lodge in many ways. Of

course, we hope that all Elks want to continue to

be Elks. It makes a healthy, vibrant lodge to keep our

membership up and current. In addition it COSTS the

lodge $$ to have lapsed members. This is not just be-

cause we are counting on the membership dues (we are,) but part of those dues

must be prepaid to our national and state associations. We do not get a refund if a

member does NOT choose to pay or renew. Money is one of the lodge's most pre-

cious resources, and conserving it, raising it, and using it wisely is in my opinion,

one of the most important charges that the offi cers and trustees have.

What follows is a list of lapsed members as of this writing. If you have paid since

this went to publication... THANK YOU! If not, please do so, as your lodge needs

you. This list is not presented to cause anyone embarrassment. It is the only way I

have of communicating to all of you who we need to contact, and a way for you to

know if you think you have already paid, that we don't have record of it.

Come Back! We Need You!

Michael Golden, Exalted Ruler

and items you’d like to bring to enhance the potluck. (Chris

Belcastro says she’ll be making her Polynesian meatballs that

were a hit last year.) The lounge will open at 3 p.m., with kick-

off slated to begin shortly after 3:30 p.m. A donation of $5

is suggested to help defray the costs to the Lodge. Be there

to watch the teams battle it out on the gridiron with your

favorite beverage and fellow Elks close at hand. Not a football

fan? Bring along your favorite Trivia game (Beatles and I Love

Lucy have been suggested), backgammon board, dominoes

or card games. Someone’s always up for a game.

to provide us with music for dancing every

LOVE TO COOK?Do you love to cook? Have an interest in helping your Lodge? We need volunteer

chefs for the Initiation meeting of each month. We have a few members who

have cooked simple, inexpensive meals for dinner before our initiation meeting

and would like to have more people to rotate in each month. If you are interested,

please contact an offi cer to let us know. Sample menus have included lasagna,

teriyaki chicken, macaroni and cheese, etc... We usually serve 30-40 dinners and

the lodge will support you by ordering the main ingredients for you. You can cook

at home and bring it in to warm up or use the kitchen for cooking. (Expenses will

be covered by the Lodge.)
