FROM YE OLD SCRIBE … I hope this finds you and your loved ones well and enjoying the summer. It has been a very busy month since we last communicated, so here we go with your Secretary's update for the September 2012 ATHEL-STANIAN .... Let's start with the good news first ... CONGRATULATIONS ! "Mazel Tov !" to our new Right Worship Brother SCOTT ALLAN KLEIN on his appointment as the Grand Representative of the "Grande Loge du Benin, Africa" near the Grand Lodge of the State of New York and as a member of the "Purple" of our fraternity. Brother Scott is certainly de-serving of these high honors for his many, many years of selfless and devot-ed service to Athelstane Lodge, his predecessor Lodge (Tappan Zee), our Orange-Rockland Masonic District, and to our beloved fraternity. We wish our R:.W:. Scott much happiness, personal fulfillment and an abundance of good health to enjoy this new opportunity for service to the craft for many years to come. R:.W:. Scott will also continue to continue to serve as Assis-tant Grand Lecturer of the Orange Rockland District. We look forward to the "formal" apron presentations later this fall to R:.W:. Scott and to R:.W:. DAVE RICHARDS, previously announced as the new appointee as Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Nevada near the Grand Lodge of the State of New York. At our September 4th meet-ing they will receive their commissions from our District Deputy Grand Master, The R:.W:. John Cola. Do hope you will join us in this well deserved tribute to our two active and well respected brothers. Congratulations also to our new Very Worshipful Brother MARK HANSON, (dual member of Athelstane Lodge) whose appointment was announced this summer as Assistant Grand Lecturer of the Orange Rockland District. That makes two AGLs in Athelstane! BEST WISHES ! We extend our heartiest congratulations to the winners of the 2012 Athelstane Lodge Educational Assistance Scholarships, their parents and sponsors. This year there were five recipients of these awards intended to assist children and/or grandchildren of Athelstane Lodge members in pur-suit of their higher education. These awards are made each year in memory of three of our distinguished Athelstane Lodge Brothers ... R:.W:. FRED DRESDALE, R:.W:. CLARENCE "PETE" ERICKSON, and R:.W:. MAR-TIN LINDINBERG. And the 2012 recipients are: JACQUELINE GOLDBERG, Granddaughter of Bro. PHILIP NELSON attending: NYU;

(From Ye Olde Scribe . . . Cont.) DANIELLE KLEIN, daughter of R:.W:. BRUCE KLEIN who will attend SUNY New Paltz; JESSICA SCANLON, Granddaughter of R:.W:. MARVIN GESS who will attend Muhlenberg College, Pennsylvania; MATTHEW STEWART, Son of Bro. RONALD STEWART and Grandson of R:.W:. RON STEINER, who will attend Lyndon State College, Vermont; and COURTNEY STEWART, daughter of Bro RONALD STEWART and Grandson of R:.W:. RON STEINER attending SUNY Oswego. We were also proud to note that Jacqueline Goldberg and Courtney Stewart were recipients of Grand Lodge Educational As-sistance Awards this year. Matthew and Courtney Stewart also re-ceived Royal Arch Mason Scholarship Awards, and Courtney was also the recipient of a Scottish Rite Scholarship award this year. Well done !!! SAD TIDINGS ... It was with profound sorrow that we learned of the untimely passing on July 22nd of a cherished friend and devoted Athelstane Lodge Brother, PAUL TENDLER. Paul had been courageously bat-tling cancer for many years and was in Hospice care in Florida this past month. Funeral services were held in Florida where he and his wife Sandy lived the past few years after Paul's retirement as Exec-utive Director and CEO of JAWONIO. Paul petitioned Athelstane Lodge for membership in 2005 and was Raised in May 2006. Alt-hough a Brother for a relatively few years, Paul will long be remem-bered as a soft spoken gentleman whose outstanding work for chil-dren and adults with disabilities and special needs in New York and New Jersey will forever be a living legacy to his memory. His accom-plishments merited his stature in the community and spoke volumes of his inherent Masonic beliefs and his ideals of service to his fellow-man. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to his wife Sandy and his loving family. Cards of condolence can be sent to:

Mrs. Sandy Tendler 6512 Via Milani Lake Worth, FL 33467

(From Ye Olde Scribe … , Continued) There will be a short Masonic Memorial Service for Brother Paul in Lodge on September 4th and a Memorial Service at JAWONIO on September 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at The Goodwin D. Katzen Early Childhood Education Cen-ter, 155 Phillips Hill Road, New City, N.Y. ON THE MEND ... The well wishes of the Lodge are extended to MARIE LARRINAGA, wife of our Grand Chaplain R:.W:. FEDERICO LARRINAGA who had re-cent knee surgery. The daughter of Chandra, Bro JOHN GEBBIA'S lady, who was recently hospitalized but has hopefully been discharged and returned home by the time this reaches you. JOAN STEINER, my cherished wife, who came through spinal sur-gery in early July and is making good progress. Many thanks for all of your cards and calls and for your concerns for me after my two cataract procedures in July. HOSPITALIZED . . . BEA OSTER, loving wife of our own W:. AL OSTER, in and out of the hospital during July and August, but now home and on the mend! Be well Bea and please stay well!!! Distressed to hear from our own W:. GERRY RICHARD that Broth-er SAM NIXON was hospitalized in Macon, Georgia. We spoke with Sam’s wife Edna and extended our thoughts and prayers. Ditto our Brother BILL THORNE who kept the nurses and docs at the Bronx VA Hospital on their toes . . . Hopefully bill is home by the time this reaches you. Can’t keep good men down. SUMMER ACTIVITIES .... Athelstane Brothers continued to do good things in the community. Brothers RICHIE SCHWARTZ, DSA; W:. AL OSTER; DSA; JOHN GEBBIA; DOUG WARD; and yours truly volunteered to assist at three dif-ferent golf outings (including one "rainout") sponsored by JAWONIO and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Rockland. Their good deeds in lending a hand at these fund raisers were invaluable to the charities we support. We can always use additional "hands" ... so please step up and help. There are upcoming Ma-sonic Safety IDs where we always need help. No skills needed. Please answer the call.

(From Ye Olde Scribe … , Continued) GLAD TO HEAR FROM ... Brother MANNY TORRES called from his home in Anchorage Alaska to send his warmest regards to his Athelstane Brothers and to say "Thanks!" for his 25 Year Award from Grand Lodge which we forwarded to him with his 25 Year pin. Manny also reported that Brothers from Anchor-age Lodge, as well as the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alaska, M:.W:. JERRY W. PINON, came to his home to help celebrate this mile-stone in his Masonic career, for which he is truly grateful. "G-d Bless !" Manny, and many more years with good health to enjoy !!! A WORD ABOUT OUR FIRST MEETING IN SEPTEMBER .... We have a special treat in store as we return to our labors on Tues-day September 4th. After our usual pre-meeting fellowship and dinner, we will have a special friend of the Lodge return to give an interesting talk on Brother RUDYARD KIPLING. R:.W:. HARRIS MANDEL, present Chair-man of the Grand Lodge Publications Committee and Vice Chairman of Grand Lodge Communications, will enlighten us on some of the really fasci-nating history of Kipling, noted author, poet and distinguished and proud Mason. Most of us are familiar with Jungle Book, The Man Who Would Be King, and Gunga Din ... but come and learn more about this renowned Brother. You'll be glad you did. Keep those phone calls, e-mails, and letters coming Brothers. We look for-ward to hearing from you. REMINDER . . . There is more to being a good Mason than simply paying your dues. Please think how you can improve yourself . . . how you can assist your Lodge, and how you can make a difference in our community! All the best !!! Fraternally, Ron R:. W:. Ronald J. FROM THE EAST My Brothers:

Summer is upon us, and we had a wonderful Installation and year-end party at Athelstane Lodge on June 5th. We had our last meeting on June 19th before going dark for the summer with SW Doug Ward in the East.

Although dark, the Summer isn’t without activities. On July 16th, we participated in a Big Brothers, Big Sisters Golf Outing Fundraiser, and on August 2nd we held a Safety ID program at Jawonio.

On a sadder note, Brother Paul Tendler laid down his working tools in Florida on

July 21st, 2012. We will be having an excellent first meeting on September 4th with a lecture on

Brother Rudyard Kipling given by R:.W:. Harris Mandel. Additionally, we will have a meet-ing of the Guild that night.

We had scheduled an Entered Apprentice Degree on September 18th, however, as

that is Rosh Hashanah, and we will be missing a number of Brothers, we will be applying for a Dispensation to hold the Degree on the following Tuesday, September 25th.

I want to wish all of you a safe and happy summer, and hope to see all of you in

Lodge in September.

Fraternally, W:. Howard Whitman
