Bradford Ecumenical Home, Inc. has been announced as the recipient of a paid college internship award for Information Technology. The award, granted by LeadingAge PA, a state trade association representing not-for-profit senior services providers, will provide $6,000 to cover the costs of hosting a paid college intern within the organization for a period of 8 to 10 weeks.

Lisa Johnson, CEO, states, “As healthcare and technology continue to evolve, we appreciate that LeadingAge PA has recognized our desire to provide current and future workplace support to the senior living field by enhancing students’ professional experiences.”

A selection committee comprised entirely of volunteer members from LeadingAge PA chose Bradford Ecumenical Home, Inc. as one of four award recipients from the 26 submissions that were received.

Julie Chartreau, Director of IT, comments, “Information Technology is integral to the provision of quality healthcare. As the electronic health record and telemedicine are rapidly emerging, we are fortunate for the opportunity to partner with local colleges and universities to provide a solid learning experience to information technology students in a long-term care setting.”

The paid college internship program was created by LeadingAge PA to increase awareness among college students about the opportunities and rewards available to them by pursuing a career in the field of long-term care. Interested college juniors or seniors majoring in Computer Science, Information Technology, etc. are encouraged to apply by sending a resume to Bradford Ecumenical Home, Inc., attention Lisa Johnson, CEO.

Bradford Ecumenical Home, Inc. Named As Recipient of Paid College Internship Award Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW), will mark its

39th year this July and August. PFEW was founded to teach rising high school juniors and seniors about the American private enterprise system and what it means to our country. PFEW annually holds five sessions in July and August, serving nearly 2,200 students, four at Lycoming College and a fifth at Pennsylvania College of Technology, both located in Williamsport, PA.

The focus of each session is to group the participants into management teams of junior executives who have inherited imaginary companies. These teams, under the guiding hands of volunteer Company Advisors, operate their firms for a computer simulated three-year period of time. They work with balance sheets, statements of income, market share surveys, etc., and must react to a variety of external factors as well. Sound familiar?

Every student attends the program on a fully tax-deductible $575 scholarship (the actual value of the scholarship is about $1,500) provided by a local firm. Each student wears the name of their sponsor throughout the week and writes them after graduation to report on what they have learned. PFEW is also an approved organization through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.

If you would like to learn more about this program, contact Scott Lee, vice president of marketing & development for the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education at (814) 833-9576 ext. 101 or e-mail [email protected]. PFEW is open to current sophomores and juniors in Pennsylvania and information on attendance, as well as program applications, can be found on the website. Questions can be directed to Amber Goss, Schools Assistant for PFEW, by calling her office at (814) 833-9576 ext. 103 or emailing [email protected].

Let’s talk about...In celebration of Financial Literacy Month, Northwest Bankannounced that its schools-based financial education program is making a positive impact on students’ understanding of critical financial topics in Pennsylvania area schools.

“Data shows that rigorous financial education delivered early in a young person’s development leads to positive financial behaviors later in life,” said Julie Marasco, region president of Northwest. “By providing students with the knowledge and skills they need to make smart financial decisions, we’re investing in the future economic well-being of the communities we serve in Pennsylvania.”

Northwest has partnered with leading education technology company EverFi to bring the program to local students at no cost to schools or taxpayers. The Northwest Financial Scholars Program features an interactive new-media learning platform specifically designed to introduce financial literacy skills early in a child’s cognitive development.

The 6 hour curriculum for high school students is a challenging but engaging course that aligns with state and national financial education standards. It offers an in-depth and age appropriate view into topics such as banking, budgeting, savings, payment types, credit and debt, income, investing and financing higher education.

Northwest has partnered with EverFi to reach over 15,000 students across Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio at no cost to schools since 2012.

4 Ways the Chamber Can Help Make You a Better NetworkerNetworking opportunities are everywhere. You no longer must leave your house to be able to network, but studies now show that online networking doesn’t hold the same power as in-person networking. Networking is critical to landing a job, learning about opportunities before they are broadcast, and getting more sales for your business.

You need to do it, even if you hate it, and one of the easiest most effective networking groups is the Chamber. But the Chamber does more than just introduce you to others. It offers very strong networking tools and opportunities. Here are several things you probably didn’t know about how you can improve your business networking with Chamber membership. According to HubSpot, 85% of people “say they build stronger, more meaningful business relationships during in-person business meetings and conferences.” Chambers facilitate this on a regular basis in some form or fashion, but there are a host of other ways they can help you improve your networking. Here are 4 ways the Chamber can make you a better networker that you might not have thought of:

1. In Person EventsThe Chamber offers a host of in-person events from formal annual events to informal mixers. There are even opportunities to sponsor events and showcase your business location by hosting networking events.

2. Networking AssistanceIf you’re like most people, you’re not a natural networker. It’s something you do because you know it’s necessary, but not something you enjoy. The Chamber is rich with experience and advice on how to improve your networking skills. Don’t be shy to admit to the Chamber staff that you’re struggling with networking. They can keep an eye out for you and help introduce you to the people who can make a difference in your business. You don’t get this kind of service online.

3. Thought Leadership OpportunitiesMany Chambers offer members the opportunity to share their knowledge in the form of educational ses-sions like our Brown Bag Workshops. This can position you as a thought leader in your industry and helps with networking after the event. People will naturally want to discuss the materials you presented.

4. In Sight, On the MindMost people are extremely busy these days, particularly business owners. While social media can be a very effective tool for keeping in touch, it’s too easy to miss people’s posts there. At an in-person event, on the other hand, you come face-to-face with someone and they’re immediately on your mind again. When you’re an established acquaintance and people know, like, and trust you, they are more likely to buy from you and refer you to others. Plus when they know you (from having met you in person), your social media posts will be more meaningful to them.

A Final Word About How the Chamber Can Make You a Better NetworkerNetworking is painful for most of us but having an organization that specializes in it can help you get the assistance you need to reach more customers. Chamber membership is a small price to pay for that!
