n celebration of Dia de losMuertos on Nov. 1, Bakers-field Museum of Art, 1930 RSt., will host Altares deFamilia from 3 to 7 p.m. in

the museum’s garden area. Localfamilies will create Dia de losMuertos altars in honor ofdeceased family members.

Over 10 altars will be on dis-play. These altars, normally con-structed in private homes, willinclude pictures, personal itemsand favorite foods that honor thedeparted. The ancient holiday iscelebrated in several cultures, and has roots in the

Aztec era where the spirits ofthe deceased were honored.The altar celebration is in con-junction with the museum’sDia de los Muertos art exhibi-tion.

At 4 p.m., Dr. Jess Nieto ofthe Heritage of America Edu-cational & Cultural Founda-tion, will also host aninformational discussion aboutDia de los Muertos in themuseum’s banquet room.

he Second annual RJ’s WinterGolf Classic, benefiting theKern Secret Witness Program,will be Saturday, Nov. 14 at 8a.m. at The Links at River-

lakes, 5201 Riverlakes Drive. Shotgunstart will be at 9 a.m.

The Kern Secret Witness Programwas formed as a public benefit, non-profit corporation in 1982. It is a col-laborative effort between lawenforcement and the community toinvolve the public in the criminal jus-tice system by removing the fear ofreprisal for assisting law enforce-ment. This is guaranteed by insuringthat those who provide informationwill never be identified by the secretwitness program.

The proceeds of the RJ’s WinterGolf Classic all go directly to the KernSecret Witness Program. The moneyraised by the RJ’s Winter Golf Classic

will supply the reward money avail-able for those who provide informa-tion that leads to the arrest andconviction of suspected persons. Thisprogram is administered by theSecret Witness Board of Directorsand all funding for the programcomes from public donations.

The California Highway Patrol,Bakersfield Police Department andthe Kern County Sheriff’s Depart-ment support the Kern Secret Wit-ness program and recognize it as avaluable tool to help solve crimes andapprehend wanted persons.

alloween is easily one of the mostpopular holidays for people. Betweendressing up, decorating our homesand all of the free candy, what’s notto love? Well, plenty — if you’re a pet.

First there’s the sight of all of those oddly-clothed kids (and adults) trolling through theneighborhood in the dark, rattling and swish-ing their costumes as they laugh, skip andshout their “Trick-or-Treat” greetings. Anawful lot of dogs are not excited about all ofthat activity. Some are downright horrifiedby all of it, and a fearful dog is, in my opinion,an untrustworthy dog.

I’m not saying it’s the dog’s fault — somedogs have limited exposure to children dur-ing the normal course of their lives, let alonemuch experience with the dressed-up,squealing variety. But if you know that cos-tumed short people (or tall people, for thatmatter) make your dog nervous, then by allmeans do what responsible pet owners do andeither secure them in an area of house wherethey won’t have to be repeatedly confrontedwith it or perhaps pass on handing out theHershey’s kisses. It’s not going to be anyone’sidea of a happy Halloween if a child getsnipped by an overly stressed dog.

Dogs on the other side of the spectrum cre-ate different dilemmas. Maybe your dog lovesthe outfitted little ones. Maybe they love the

hubbub so muchthat every doorknock sends theminto spasms ofactivity, boundingin six directions atonce. To keep your vis-itors safe (and yourdog home), pop a leashon your excitable pupwhile answering thedoor. He can say helloyet remain at home asthe children move on toother hand-outhotspots in the neigh-

borhood.Finally, there’s the candy rant. Yeah, I’m

going to go there. Keep an eye on that candybowl, people. Dogs have bigger mouths andfaster reflexes than we frequently give themcredit for, and they aren’t about to let littlethings like wrappers get between them andforbidden-fruit goodness. Save yourself theclean-up and the possible vet bill by keepingthe candy bowl well out of reach. That wayboth of you can have a happy Halloween.

all is upon us and a wonderful, easy way tocreate a fall photo is to visit your local gro-cery store.

Most of our stores carry fresh, inexpen-sive flowers, as well as miniature pump-

kins, Indian corn, candy corn and gourds. Allperfect fall photo props!

You can shoot outside in the shade or inside nextto a north facing window. Go in for a nice tightshot, so that a lot of background is not visible. Trydifferent angles and heights. Don’t be afraid toshoot at the same level as the arrangement. Justrealize more background will show.

An easy fix is to use push pins and put a piece ofmaterial or even a piece of scrapbooking paper onthe wall behind the arrangement.

Even though the Bakersfield area is not knownfor its fall color, don’t let that stop you. Our localstreets and mountains offer wonderful photoopportunities.

Gosford Road, between White Lane and Stock-dale Highway, the Old Stockdale area and the Ole-ander area instantly come to mind, as well as theKern Canyon, Lake Isabella, Glennville andTehachapi.

So grab your camera, and have some fun.No matter what physical limitations you may
