We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and

missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Worship Services

Break Free Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center opening with a gathering and fellowship time at 5:30 pm. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory.

Traditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service.

Connect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.

Freedom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Welcome to Shalimar UMC

Remembering the Saints

This is All Saints Sunday (week). All Saints is a time to remember those who have gone before us. We will remember the Biblical Saints who walked and lived by faith. In our church we also remember members of Shalimar United Methodist who have gone on to their Heavenly reward this year. On the front of the Beacon, you will find the names of members of our congregation who passed away this year. It is good that we take a weekend to remember and give thanks to our precious loved ones. Our scripture today Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us … “we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses.” No this is not a storage cloud (as Brian Dale said) for our documents or a “pie in the sky” cloud but rather an unlimited and infinite space for our spiritual connection with those before us, now, and those in the future! The writer of Hebrews filed chapter 11 for our benefit. And no this is not to rid us of being spiritually bankrupt but to the contrary the most gifted writing of the Bible of lifting up those who … “lived and walked by faith.” Hebrews tells us… “Faith is the confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1) So many spiritual giants are commended…Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Sarah, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, and others. The writer says their faith “conquered kingdoms, brought justice, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of flames, escaped the sword, became powerful in battle, and dead were raised to life again.” Faith is not easy… “some faced jeers, flogging, chains, and imprisonment”… “some were stoned, sawed in two, and killed by the sword.” One of my favorite passages in this book is Hebrews 11:6… “without faith it is impossible to please God.” We as human beings like control, we like guarantees, we like things now…but the Bible is clear only God controls, delivers, and holds the keys to time! We learn from the giants of the Bible and we are inspired to live and walk by faith. Another dimension of All Saints is remembering those who have passed away this last year from our congregation. As the late, J. Lamar Brown, a former pastor of Shalimar, used to say opening celebration services… “we transfer the membership of the loved one from Shalimar UMC into the Kingdom of God.” One of the joys I have had in the last few years at Shalimar UMC is renewing relationships of the 1980’s. My breath has been taken away with the number of those saints who I have shared in their celebration of life services. We have had so many wonderful disciples through the years at Shalimar UMC. All our Saints will be missed, and we will feel a loss, but our hope ultimately is we all will be in communion again in Heaven! Thanks be to God for all the Saints who have gone on to be with the Lord this year. May we take time to live more fully as we remember them!

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals

Faith Parry, Associate Pastor [email protected]

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen. The Apostles’ Creed is something we say in Traditions every Sunday. For those of us who grew up in a traditional denomination like the Methodist church, we learned it at a young age along with the Lord's Prayer and the Gloria Patri. How many times do you really think about what you say in this creed? The last part of the creed focuses on the Holy Spirit, which unites all Christians on earth and across time, forming the Universal or holy catholic church. Then we talk about the communion of saints. This is the people who have gone before us in the "cloud of witnesses" (Heb. 12), who have lived a life of faith and dedication to God and who now have joined our Lord and Savior in glory. This weekend, as we celebrate All Saints Day, we remember that cloud of witnesses. Take some time and think about who has witnessed to you in your faith and who has now gone on into glory. Thoughts to ponder: 1) Who had been the one person to influence you the most in your spiritual

walk? 2) Who led you to Jesus? 3) Who do you celebrate this year that has joined Christ in glory? 4) Do you think you have the same type of faith as these people you are remembering? For more thoughts, visit www.faithparry.com
