Mookgophong gospel artist Tau Dia Rora ,whose real name is Caiphus Khosa, andconcerned residents’ representative Wally VanTonder have smoked a peace pipe after thecourt intervened in their dispute last Thursday8 October.Tau dia Rora was hauled to court by Van

Tonder, after Van Tonder complained about theartist’s performances in the local CBD (CentralBusiness District). The two parties attended a hearing behind

closed doors at the Mookgophong MagistrateCourt.Tau Di a Rora and Van Tonder agreed that the

artist can continue performing in town, but thenthe sound must be adjusted so that it does nottorment residents.Tau Di a Rora told The Beat that earlier this

year a mob of police officers confronted him

while he was performing for his audience in theCBD and switched off his music. He said he was accused of making noise and

also performing in town without a permit.“At the time the police arrived while I was

performing and switched off my sound. I wasadvised to obtain a permit from the localmunicipality. I went through the relevantprocedures and was granted permission toperform in the CBD during the weekends. Iwas shocked when I received a call from thelocal police station. I was then served withdocuments that instructed me to come tocourt,” he said.He said he is relieved following an agreement

between himself and the complainant. This artist said performances are his only way

of putting bread on his table and enables him topay the people he works with. The Beat is in possession of a video where

the artist was being confronted by the police.Van Tonder said he never intended to stop

the artist from performing in town, but onlywanted him to reduce the volume.“I was complaining about excessive noise.

For the past six years I have been staying intown, and then my friend (Khosa) started withhis music and I went to him twice. I went to thepolice twice and no one wanted to help. I neversaid he must not play, the only thing I ask isthat he must turn his music a little bit down,”he said.Another resident Jan Van Rensburg said this

kind of agreement is all they needed, and saidhe hopes they would now have a peaceful sleepafter the artist agreed to turn the music downduring his performances.Tau Di a Rora has five albums behind his

name, including the recent Shona titled albumMwari Komberera Africa (God Bless Africa).

Poor maintenance result inwater cut-offs

Residents of Bela-Bela have been faced withyet another series of water cut-offs this pastweek. Water cut-offs have been reported byseveral residents since Friday 9 October. Thishas been the second cut-off in less than amonth where residents had been left with nowater running from their taps.

The first cut offs, which occurred on Friday25 September, is said to have been due tomaintenance problems on one of the reservoirs’water pumps.

The most recent cut-offs have been said to bethe result of a faulty pump at one of thereservoirs in Renaissance. This was announcedby the municipality and relevant stakeholdersduring a meeting on Monday 12 October. Itwas announced that a contractor has beenassigned to repair the damaged motor duringthe course of the week.

Meanwhile the Bela-Bela Concernedresidents group Change took to social mediashortly thereafter detailing the nature of the cut-offs and the town’s water status.

“The pumps from Magalies Water have beengiving problems lately such as overheating. This has caused some interruptions in regardsto the water which is pumped into our waterreticulation system, but they are attending to it,or have already. The Municipality will be

meeting with them in this week to get anupdate in regards to this,” the group posted ontheir Facebook page.

It was further stated that some of the boreholepumps, which also pumps water into the waterreticulation system, are not functioning.

It was said the Municipality is investigatingthis and will be fixing or replacing the pumpswhich are not working and installing pumps tothose boreholes which do not have pumps atthis stage.

“Once this has been sorted it will assist toincrease our town’s water supply for the future, but the real cause of our latest water problemsoccurred about two weeks ago was when thepump at the water purification plant stoppedfunctioning properly, the said pump no longerpumped sufficient water to the reservoirsituated next to Renaissance, which is one ofthe causes why this reservoir went empty.”

Change further said that another problemarose when a pump located at the reservoirnext to Renaissance, which pumps water fromthere to the bigger reservoir located above it,broke down. “This pump only starts pumpingto the bigger reservoir once the reservoir it ispumping from is 90% full and switches on andof off automatically. This pump broke downdue to old age, it is said to be older than 20years,”

This pump was reportedly replaced about aweek ago which caused the bigger reservoir togo empty and why certain areas have struggledwith sufficient water as the Municipality is stillstruggling to fill this bigger reservoir withwater.

When asked about why household water issometimes brown, the municipality explainedthat this is often the result when the reservoirsare being cleaned.
