The Bell
Mission Statement
We, the people of
St. Mary Parish
because of our
baptismal promises and compelled by our Catholic
identity, seek to be an example of
God’s presence by worship,
education, and service to our neighbors
with sensitivity to those most in
need of God’s love.
~ Ash Wednesday - February 18 ~
This Wednesday, February 18th is Ash Wednesday. The times available to receive Ashes are listed in this bulletin. Ash Wednesday hits us squarely between the eyes, forcing us to face our mortality and our sinfulness…
“Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return…”
These are some of the opportunities for us to open ourselves to God’s transforming grace this Lenten season:
Fasting and Abstinence
Fasting and Abstinence are mandated by the Church during the season of Lent. Although people are encouraged to do more for their own spiritual growth, the currently designated fast days are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This applies to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. Fasting is defined to mean only one full meal a day. Two other smaller meals may be had. All Catholics 14 years old and older must observe the law of abstinence. This means refraining from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, or dairy products. Prayer and Almsgiving
Prayer and Almsgiving are two of the time-honored traditions of the Catholic Church during Lent. Most Catholics try to find time for extra prayer during Lent, either as individuals, as a family, as parish groups, or by attending daily Mass. All are encouraged to spiritual development through reflection on the readings of the season, attending the Stations of the Cross, attending the Lenten Speaker Series and by personal attempts to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. One of the ways we demonstrate our unity with Christ is to care for his/our brothers and sisters. Any form of charity, donations of time, talent, or treasure to benefit others can be viewed as almsgiving. Reconciliation Service
During Lent most parishes offer extra times when the Sacrament of Reconciliation can be celebrated. Our parish will celebrate a communal reconciliation service which includes individual celebration of the sacrament on Monday, March 23rd at 7:00 PM with Fr. Peter Heidenrich being the Celebrant of that Service. Part of the intent of the communal celebration is to acknowledge the communal effect of sin, and our need to be reconciled with one another. This is an opportunity to affirm our interdependence as we prepare for Easter. Lent is a time for us to do something different and unique in our lives to allow God’s grace the opportunity to change us and turn us away from sin, making us better Christians.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Your Parish Family is proud of you!
“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty.” ~ Pope Francis
Rice Bowls will be distributed to each child in RE and School the week before Lent. The following letter helps us all to take this parish project to heart. Thank you all, Sr. Margaret
+ + + + + Dear Families,
This Lent we will participate in the CRS Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that will help you experience Lenten spirituality by living in solidarity with people in need around the world. As we, the global Church, prepare for the World Meeting of Families 2015 in Philadelphia this fall, it is especially appropriate to come together in prayer as a family this Lent. Your cardboard CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar are great tools to guide your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Read these materials together and consider what you will give up for Lent as a family or as individuals. Be sure to write your goals on the side of your CRS Rice Bowl. Your Lenten Calendar has brief activities for each day of Lent, Stories of Hope from people around the world and recipes for simple meatless meals. Consider reading the Lenten Calendar as a family each day at dinner. Try one or more of the recipes for a meatless Friday dinner and be sure to watch the CRS Rice Bowl Global Kitchen videos to learn how to prepare each meal. Be sure to visit crsricebowl.org to view videos of people whose lives are touched by your support of CRS Rice Bowl. You can also find fun activities for your family. And download the CRS Rice Bowl app to receive daily reflections right on your phone and to track your Lenten sacrifices. We will be collecting your CRS Rice Bowls at the end of Lent, so stay tuned to learn more. Thank you for using the CRS Rice Bowl with your family this Lent.
Randy Lee Belice, a parishioner of St. Mary Parish, is scheduled to be ordained to the Order of Deacon on May 17, 2015 at Holy Name Cathedral by Archbishop Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. Catholics are obliged to reveal any impediments or circumstances that would prevent Randy Lee Belice from receiving Sacred Orders and should contact the pastor or the archbishop with such information as soon as possible if there is a serious question about the candidate’s suitability for ordained ministry.
