The Best of
The Great Motion Picture
Themes
Often you may hear it first before the houselights dim, before the opening credits flash upon the screen. It may start as a quiet refrain, so soft at first that
you hardly notice. Or it may burst forth with a resounding fortissimo
that almost lifts you out of your seat.
It is the movie theme — the recurrent melody that underscores the film’s most
dramatic moments. Perhaps it accompanies a weary Southern lass as she returns to the war-scarred plantation she loves indomitably. Or spurs to greater heroism the freedom fighters of a new nation who have snatched a glorious hope
from the ashes of old hatreds. It may depict the affection of a carnival waif for the puppets who are her only friends. Or add poignancy to the ill-fated
romance of a beautiful Eurasian girl and an American male in Hong Kong.
Here are some of the greatest themes, unforgettable music from outstanding
motion pictures. Among them, they have collected a total of six Academy Awards. The film music from “Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing” was
honored for both best song and best score. “Lili” “Ben-Hur” “Exodus and “Lawrence of Arabia” all won awards for best score. These and the other masterful themes in this album are performed by duo-pianists Whittemore
and Lowe, Jackie Gleason, Frank Pourcel, and Frank Barber’s sound-in-the-
round, as well as by three composer-conductors who are among the most distinguished of the screen: Alfred Newman, Miklos Rozsa, and David Rose.
