PROJECT UNDERWAY! — Jeff Horn (left), James Wood and Chad Huddleston show off the
architect’s drawing of Wood’s new Hyundai dealership in Decatur, across US 287 South from his
General Motors facility. Horn will be the general manager and Huddleston, the sales manager,
for Wise County’s fi rst new-car dealership for imports. Hyundais are built in South Korea.
James Wood doesn’t speak Korean. But he does know that “Hyundai” means “good value” for his customers’ hard-earned money.
Earlier this month, the veteran Decatur retailer received fi nal approval for what will be Wise County’s fi rst new-car dealership for imported brands. It will be located on the south side of U.S. 81/287, across from Wood’s General Motors deal-ership.
This is Wood’s 30th year as a GM dealer. For a short period in the 1980s, he also sold Chryslers, Plymouths and Dodges.
Wood’s Hyundai dealer-ship will open in a tempo-rary building between his used-car facility and perma-nent quarters that should be ready by Jan. 1, Wood said. He combined his late-model pre-owned and fi nance-lot operations into one building to make room for Hyundai.
Several vehicles of an ini-tial order of 100 new Hyun-dais already have arrived.
“We should be open by Nov. 15,” said Jeff Horn, who will manage the Hyundai dealership while continuing to oversee Wood’s extensive used-car operations. “We’re hiring sales and sales-sup-port staff right now, and we could have employment op-portunities for technicians as well.”
Horn has worked 15 years for Wood at his Denton GM dealership, serving in sales, fi nance-and-insurance and management roles.
The Hyundai dealership will have its own service operation. The service drive and showroom will be con-nected. “It will be a state-of-
the art facility, with Internet available right on the show-room,” Horn said.
Wood has named longtime salesman Chad Huddleston as Hyundai sales manager. Wood veteran Rusty Rice will be service and parts ad-viser.
Hyundai and its sister brand, Kia, have grown re-markably in the U.S. mar-ket. “Hyundai offers reliable, affordable transportation that comes with great fuel economy,” Wood said.
A few years ago, Hyun-dai boldly broke from the pack by offering a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, a sure recipe for failure if its products proved to be undependable. It was a gamble that paid off, Wood noted.
The brand’s bumper-to-bumper warranty is fi ve years or 60,000 miles.
Wood’s Decatur operation has become famous for its “hillside of trucks” on the north side of U.S. 81/287, but that won’t be the case at James Wood Hyundai. The brand offers four models of cars and three sport utility vehicles.
The SUVs include the smaller Tucson, mid-size Santa Fe, and the Veracruz, which Horn compared to the GMC Acadia and Buick En-clave. “It’s a nice, roomy ve-hicle,” he said.
Horn said the Accent is Hyundai’s entry-level com-muter car. The Sonata is about the size of Chevy’s Malibu, while the Azera is Hyundai’s answer to the Buick LaCrosse.
The newest offering is a luxury model, the Genesis, with which Hyundai is tak-
ing on the likes of Lexus, BMW and even the Cadil-lac CTS, which Wood sells at Denton. A V8 engine is optional.
While the vehicles will come from across the Pacifi c, the Hyundai dealership’s at-mosphere will be distinctly Texan.
“James intends for us to run the dealership just like we do our other facili-ties,” Horn pointed out. “If we treat our customers right and take care of their wants and needs, then we should be successful selling Hyundais. We have a lot of satisfi ed customers driving Cadillacs and crewcabs all over Texas.”
