The Bigger Picture: Developing a SySTEM To Change Lives

To position Utah Jazz forward Trevor Booker as a public advocate and brand him as the first ACTIVE NBA player to support STEM education.

To use basketball as a means to increase academic success among students ages seven to 17, emphasizing the importance of STEM Education, and to promote healthy living through physical activity and proper nutrition.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics—STEM. STEM learning is an economic imperative. Experts say that technological innovation accounted for almost half of U.S. economic growth over the past 50 years, and almost all of the 30 fastest-growing occupations in the next decade will require at least some background in STEM.

By The Numbers By education type, STEM jobs will predominantly require a Bachelor’s degree

or better. Still, about a THIRD of all STEM jobs will be for those with less than a Bachelor’s degree.

Total jobs: STEM occupations will grow from 6.8 million to 8 million total jobs by 2018.

Job openings: STEM occupations will provide 2.4 million job openings through 2018, including 1.1 net new jobs and 1.3 replacement jobs due to retirement.

Postsecondary education: 92% of STEM jobs will be for those with at least some postsecondary education and training.

Equity: Diversion of women and minorities is compounded by other factors.

For women and minorities, STEM is the best equal opportunity employer.

Although pay gaps exist between minorities and Whites/Asians and women and men in STEM, they are smaller than in other occupations.

Shortages: We face a chronic shortage in STEM competencies as the demand for STEM talents grows outside traditional STEM jobs.

Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson became the first NBA

player to bring public awareness to STEM education with his recent

partnership with Time Warner Cable.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar became California’s

after-school STEM ambassador, after writing the children’s book “What Color Is My World?”

– a history of African American inventors. Jabbar donated $100,000 from his Skyhook

Foundation to the Los Angeles Unified School District, where 82% of students are from low-

income families.

Carmelo Anthony, John Wall, Allen Iverson, Jordan Hill, Andre Miller, Andray Blatche, and Kenyon Martin have all attended our camp in previous years. This camp will pioneer in a medium in which athletes can use their influence to directly connect major corporations to college university students in STEM related fields. University students will have the opportunity to gain valuable day-to-day field study experience, while providing insight to campers about their chosen career paths. From a business standpoint, corporate entities will have access into the homes of between 150-200 attendees to distribute their marketing material to. Companies will also be able to directly connect to our STEM camp counselors, who can be seen as prospective employees.

Trevor Booker's camp is transcendent in the fact that it will integrate a FULL HOUR of various STEM related activities that will be taught through the basic principles of basketball.

Basketball is simple math. From the angles of the perfect jump shot to the defensive strategies that prohibits a team's opponents from scoring, basketball is STEM. But its not just about basketball as we are also promoting healthy lifestyles, and teaching proper nutrition.

Clemson University instructors and students, who are majoring in STEM related careers will be on hand each day to assist in the facilitation of the curriculum.

We are also requiring a Pre-Camp survey that parents must fill out before they register their kids that inquire about their familiarity with healthy living, childhood obesity, and academics.

Our goal is to encourage today's influencers and hold them accountable for educating our youth in these fields of study because STEM pervades every aspect of our lives. We want them to be informed on their best career options.

NBA FIT Initiative NBA/WNBA FIT is the league's comprehensive health and wellness program that encourages physical activity and healthy living for children and families through programs, events, and products. The NBA/WNBA FIT nationwide network includes more than 1,200 organizations committed to bringing NBA/WNBA FIT programs and events to more than 2.5 million children, adults, and families. Network members include YMCAs, the National Recreation & Park Association, Police Athletic Leagues, Boys & Girls Clubs, Jewish Community Centers and community organizations globally.

The NBA is comprised of 30 teams that are located in 28 cities across the United States and Canada. Each team typically carries 15 players on their roster, which totals 450 players. The NBA development League is comprised of 17 teams, which carries 10 players on each roster. League wide, that is an estimate of 620 professional basketball players. Imagine the global impact on lives we could have, if as little as a third of all players implemented a curriculum like what Mr. Booker is doing with their youth camps.

Trevor Booker endeavors to bring STEM education onto the court through a youth summer camp curriculum that utilizes basketball to reinforce science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts.

Mr. Booker intends to use his celebrity to positively impact the Salt Lake City, Utah Greenville, South Carolina, and Washington, DC communities by creating new business partnerships and increasing youth involvement in afterschool and summer programs in both areas. This has NEVER been done by any other professional athlete before, and in order to make his DREAM a reality; we need YOU.
