THANK YOU FROMA FAMILY PARTNER
Upon entering our newtownhouse, the smell of fresh
paint still in the air, my familyand I realized that the foundationthat holds up this house does notconsist solely of steel andcement.
The physical and emotionalsupport of all the volunteers andorganizers has made this miracle
possible.Not only have we been
given a house, but a "habitat."Our neighbours are friends, andwe are not afraid for ourchildren's safety.
Thank you, Habitat forHumanity, for a house we cantruly call home.

ORGANIZED LABOUR
KEY TO PHASE ONE
By Don Jantzenand Tyler Sampson
In April of 2002, the Habitat for HumanitySociety of Greater Vancouver finished PhaseOne of the Government Street project, the firstfour townhouses of a planned twenty-seven-unit development.
While there have been many, manyvolunteers working on-site and in-committee,the key to the successful completion of PhaseOne has been the participation of organizedlabour.
The British Columbia Federation ofLabour and the BC Yukon Building TradesCouncil have both endorsed HabitatVancouver and the Government Street project. Thanks to their cooperation and activesupport, Habitat has been able to reach out to
both active and retired union members fromall trades.
The efforts of these union and tradesvolunteers have made a large and verysignificant difference throughout Phase Oneof the Government Street project. The HabitBoard originally estimated a 1:3 ratio ofvolunteer to paid labour on the site. In fact, ihas turned out to be the converse, largely duto volunteers from the building trades.
These highly skilled tradesmen andtradeswomen work quickly, are good leaderand provide excellent instruction to theircrews of unskilled and semi-skilledvolunteers. These qualities have made them
an important partner in Habitats mission toeliminate poverty housing.Organized labour has also assisted
Habitat Vancouver is other ways. Unionlocals have provided significant donations,
postage for mail-outs and technical supportfor the Home Dedication Ceremony on Apri27, 2002.
All signs point to a blossomingrelationship with organized labour and theircontinued support in the fight against poverthousing.
