The Surat Aboriginal Corporation (SAC) invite parents, grandparents and caregivers of children under 5 years old to join them for Little Marda’s Indigenous Playgroup, Roma. Parents can meet, make friends, let their children interact and share ideas each Thursday 10am-11am during the school term. The program includes free activities like morning tea, arts and crafts, educational play and more. Call Chloe Cleven at SAC on 4626 5288 or email [email protected] for more info. All community members of all ages are also invited by SAC to attend the Yarning Circle, every Thursday until June 20. Afternoon tea is provided at the free event that runs from 3pm-4pm at the Roma Community Gardens. The Yarning Circle is about working together to talk about how to become a stronger community and gives you a voice to discuss issues of importance within the community. Call 4626 5288 or email [email protected] to find out more.

Community work As part of the Roma Freemasons involvement with the Community a cheque to assist with expenses was handed to local Health Workers, Yowie Thomas, Meagan Benson and Anne Bousefield. They will soon be travelling to the city of Arusha in Tanzania. They will be assisting with mid-wifery and rearing babies. Their goal is to help reduce the mortality of mothers and babies in that community by teaching the latest health care methods to the women of a third world country. They are all prepared for a very different and potentially challenging working environment. 60 Year Jewel Peter Thomas recently recited his 60 Year Membership Jewel from the Very Worshipful Brother Matthew Bidgood. Peter started his Freemasonry journey in Victoria before moving to Goomeri then Roma 15 years ago. He is currently a member of Maranoa and Raphael Lodges in Roma and a strong supporter of Corona Lodge in Wallumbilla.

Novice and advanced bowlers took advantage of this great opportunity to improve their bowling. Even Town Crier Sir Francis Drake made an appearance with his old-fashioned wooden bowls and was instructed on using the modern bowling arm. The Club also congratulates Johnny Hammond on his achievements at the Queensland Junior State Titles held on the Sunshine Coast in April. Johnny took home gold and two silver medals.

The Mitchell Show is done and dusted for another year. The community rallied to put together some great entries across all sections in the pavilion, despite the prevailing dry conditions. Rhonda Mansfield took home the Champion Rose sash while Kyle Mansfield received the Grand Champion Art Exhibit sash for a wooden ram’s head sculpture. Commercial Cattle gave way to a popular Pet Parade this year which proved to be lots of fun. In the ring, Chelsea McKellar and Riley Thurston were standouts taking home a swag of ribbons. Ring Results: Supreme Led Exhibit - Flavanka/Chelsea McKeller Supreme Hunter Horse - Flavanka/Chelsea McKellar. Supreme Show Hack- Cymera Willow/Alannah Ladbrook. Show day concluded with a brilliant performance from world class entertainers RoofTop Express followed by an amazing fireworks display. Well done to the committee and all show participants for putting on a great display of what Mitchell has to offer.

On Tuesday 7th of May, Karen Purves launched her new book "Gratitude Prompts" at the Mitchell Library. Karen discovered how powerful and life changing gratitude practice can be after her marriage ended and a chain reaction of events began; she became homeless, without a job and abandoned by friends. With this book you will prompt yourself everyday to practice kindness to yourself. But how does it work? Well you open the book at a random page, guided by your intuition. Turn to the beginning of the topic. Read the quote and the story which you then combine with your experience and information to spark thoughts about how the topic fits in your life. Finally, there are three suggested actions to get you going. This all means you no longer have to wonder whether you are covering all the bases and really helps if you are overwhelmed when facing a new blank page each day. What's more, even if you return to the same topic, it will spark different thoughts because you are not the same.

On April 12, 13 and 14 Dunkeld Pony Club hosted their 50th Woodlands Pony Club Camp. It was a fantastic, fun weekend for young and old and 36 riders participated in two days of instruction with some of the best instructors Queensland has to offer. Our 50 year celebration held on the Saturday evening was a great success with many faces from the past returning to share their

experiences from camps gone by and celebrate this milestone in true Woodlands style. Our competition day followed on the Sunday with all the children displaying exceptional horsemanship.Overall Camp Champion was split between Archie and Beau Campbell. Most Points for a Dunkeld member was won by Ellen Caskey. Dunkeld Pony Club also thanks Mitchell Rotary for their generosity and support through the drought relief program, it has been greatly appreciated by members.

Members of Amby Branch QCWA have donated $80.00 dollars from their recent catering at Springhill Country Craft Retreat to the State Public Rural Crisis Fund of QCWA. This assists with any disaster, whether it be flood, fire or drought. The Branch decided to hold their next meeting at Springhill Country Craft Retreat as it will be convenient for our proposed workshop of making a pillowcase and/or a pillowcase dress with no internal exposed seams. The date for the meeting will be June 20 – meeting commencing a 9:30am with a cuppa and then sewing to follow at approximately 11am. All are welcome to come along and join us.

Mitchell’s Booringa Heritage Museum is set to receive a miniature train, carriages and a 100m of track. The Maraona Regional Council has accepted on behalf of the community, both the miniature train, carriages, and track and the MAS 1540 Sleeping Car from the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway to replace Loco 761 that is soon to be removed from Mitchell Memorial Park. Results from a recent survey of Mitchell residents by Maranoa Regional Council revealed that their preferred location for the miniature train is the Booringa Heritage Museum. The train, similar to the train at The Big Rig in Roma, will be a great addition to the already popular museum and will provide a great attraction for tourists young and old.

The people of Mitchell gathered early to attend the Dawn Service and honour the many war veterans who left to fight for our country. As the sun rose, RSL President Mr Daryl Beitzen, spoke about the sacrifice of those who died on Gallipoli and those who have followed in the wars that came after. At 10.30 am community members gathered for the Mitchell Anzac Day march. Numerous community groups participated in the march, including Mitchell State School, St Patrick’s School, Mitchell Magpies Rugby League & Netball Club, Mitchell MPHS, Maranoa and Dunkeld Pony Clubs. Particpants marched down Cambridge Street to the Memorial Park where they gathered at cenotaph to pay their respects to our servicemen and women past and present. Mr Beitzen spoke about the past and encouraged young people to learn about the sacrifice of those who serve their country. He explained the Ode, and how many of the servicemen and women did not get the opportunity to grow old, they died in war so that we all have the opportunity to grow old in a free and fair country. Mr Beitzen acknowledged the

two young flag bearers who are related to Charlie Mitchell, an indigenous man who fought and was killed in New Guinea. Hymns were sung before the wreath-laying ceremony, the ceremony then closed with a touching performance by St Patrick’s school children of the Irish Blessing.

Lifeline Darling Downs, Surat Aboriginal Corporation and RESQ are combining to offer Mitchell residents a free ‘Dollars & Sense’ money management workshop on Tuesday June 4 at the RESQ Office. The workshop will run from 10-11am and morning tea is provided. You will learn how to make sense of your money including budgeting, where to seek help, fee-free banking and how to make better financial choices. Call Surat Aboriginal Corporation for more information on 4626 5288 or RSVP to [email protected].

Considering the weather the day before (a wonderful 4-5 inches of much-needed rain), which prevented people from getting to town, Injune still had a good role up of about 50 for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service. This was followed by the march at 10am and a service in the hall. Rodney Scantelbury, Fiona Caffery and Charlee O’Donohue hosted the ceremony in the hall with the commemorative address delivered by Injune’s Citizen of the Year Brigid Price. They were ably assisted by Peter O’Connor, Mandy Walker singing hymns, Lance Nayda reciting the Ode and Mia Fullerton reading “In Flanders Fields”. Special mention must be made of the contribution of Injune State School student Ashton Hornick who co-led the march with Isabella Gordon, laid a wreath on behalf of the school, accepted the passing of the torch from Peter O’Connor and, when no-on else appeared, voluntarily stepped up to lay a wreath on behalf of Injune Tennis Club. Also thanks to Kim Green who works behind the scenes to ensure events such as this run smoothly. In addition to remembering those who have served in past conflicts the ceremony also paid tribute to current members of Australia’s Defence Forces. On display at the hall were service medals from Injune local Jade Creevey who has participated in operations in Timor-Leste and Afghanistan. Jade is currently posted to the 5th Aviation Regiment in Townsville as a Transport Sergeant.

Injune will be holding a three-day photography workshop with Louise Cronold Imagery during June and places are still available. The workshop, running from Friday June 14 to Sunday June 16, is suitable for beginners through to experienced photographers whether you are using a camera or a smart phone. The workshop costs $70 for one day, $120 for two days or $140 for all three days. More information can be obtained by contacting Debbie Duff on 0447 125 115 or emailing debbieduff@y7mail,com. The workshop is being subsidised by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the QLD Government and Maranoa Regional Council.

Injune Race Club invites everyone to join them for a fun day of winter racing at the Santos Injune Cup Race day on Saturday June 8. With five local races, betting on away races available and the calcutta on the Santos Injune Cup, all race goers should be entertained. There will be free kids entertainment and ladies and gents are encouraged to put on their best attire to enter the Black Toyota Fashions on the Field. Categories this year will be Classic Lady, Contemporary Lady and Gents. Once the races conclude stay on and enjoy the live music and bar till late. Gates open from 11:00am

The Cultural Heritage Injune Preservation Society (CHIPS) has been busy of late, under the guidance of new president Veronica Pringle, as they prepare for the lead up to the Injune Centenary in 2022. A successful Mother’s Day afternoon tea was held at the Bowling Club to raise funds and was enjoyed by many women, bedecked in magnificent

hats, who caught the Clip Clop taxi to the event. CHIPS has also received a $10,500 grant to assist with the publication of a Centenary Book. Professional Historian Judith Nissen has been engaged by the Maranoa Regional Council, via the grant, to assist and provide guidance on content and stories. Judith met with CHIPS members on April 25.

Congratulations to the newest member of Injune’s QFES brigade Kacey Nichols who completed her training recently. Kacey brings the brigade numbers up to six. More members are encouraged to join. Farewell to Possum Park caretakers Tina and Patrick Roe who will be leaving us at the end of June. During their short time in town Tina and Patrick have been active members of sporting and tourism groups and their smiling faces will be greatly missed. Congratulations also to Gloria Melcer who was recently recognised for her mammoth 45 years of service with Queensland Health. Good news story of the month: When Pam Girle and partner Peter Sheehan lost their 16-year-old, deaf dog Boss on Washpool Road

east of Injune, hopes for her return were slim. But a week later, after rains raised creeks levels across the area, a wet, burr-covered and limping Boss turned up on a property five kilometres from town. Using the power of the Injune and Surrounds Facebook page and observant locals, Boss made a joyful reunion to Peter within the hour.

ANZAC Day was observed with Dawn Services at Yuleba and Wallumbilla and Morning Services at Jackson and Wallumbilla. There was great community support for all commemorations. Residents of Jackson and surrounding districts gathered at the ANZAC plaque near the playshed. Over 50 people were in attendance to honour family and community members, of past and present generations who have provided service to Australia in theatres of war. Many wreaths and poppies were laid following the address by Tony Hindman who related the service history of a relative who served in World War II. All enjoyed fellowship and morning tea in the hall following the commemoration. As dawn broke in Yuleba, community members gathered to pay tribute to all service personnel in a solemn service at the Yuleba War Memorial in Stephenson Street. The Rev Dr Imelda O’Loughlin gave a moving address. Everyone enjoyed the tea and coffee served afterwards. Wallumbilla hosted both a dawn service and a morning service at the Wallumbilla War Memorial in Chadford Street, with marches proceeding both. There was an excellent turnout and the Wallumbilla SS Concert Band provided music for the march. The addresses were given by Roslyn Stemmler and Ron Swanwick. Breakfast and morning tea were both served in the Wallumbilla Memorial Hall. A special mention must go to Bugler for the day – Congratulations to Sam Collier.

Yuleba State School recently welcomed new Principal Rebecca Boldorac who says she is excited to join the small school. “One of the fondest memories I have of my childhood are the primary years in small one or two-classroom schools where my parents were the main educators,” said Mrs Boldorac. After a detour into theatre, Mrs Boldorac ended up following her parents footsteps into education. "When the teaching principal position came up in Yuleba, my husband and I jumped at the chance!” said Mrs Boldorac. “This school and town seemed like a great fit as they will allow me to extend my career while continuing as a classroom teacher and connecting with great country kids. “Yuleba promises to deliver the country lifestyle my husband and I have be yearning for,” she said. Mrs Boldorac and her husband plan on settling in Yuleba longterm and have so far been blown away by the warm welcome and the community’s kindness. “Thank you for accepting me into this amazing place, I look forward to getting to know the community better,” said Mrs Boldorac.

Tennis Fixtures Tennis fixtures started with a chill this year on May 5. Players dusted the cobwebs off their tennis racquets and got back into the ‘swing’.

Teams were short so a few extra games were played, resulting in extra muscle soreness for all! Noonga Youth Noonga’s young citizens continue to be extremely active. Both Cory Leahy and Monty Hindman competed in the Miles & District Cross Country. Cory coming 5th in U14 and Monty coming 1st in 11yo, both went on to compete at South West Trials at Tara in late May. Cory Leahy and Monty Hindman again qualified at the South West Trials for Orienteering and also the Darling Downs Trials and have been selected to compete at the State Championships in July. Payton Leahy travelled to Charleville to compete at South West School U18 Girls Touch Trials. Payton was selected and has gone on to contest State Trials at Camp Hill at the end of May. Gold Medallist and Record Breaker Beres Hindman has been swimming since she was a young girl. Her passion for the

sport began at the Roma Pool over seventy years ago. Adding to her long history of achievements in the pool, and not to be outdone by her Grandson, Monty, Beres won six Gold medals at the Queensland Masters State Championships in April. Swimming at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane as a member of the Toowoomba Tadpoles, Beres won Gold in every event she competed in and set a new State record in the 100m Breaststroke. Congratulations to Noonga’s quiet achieving Gold Medallist!!

Jackson Landcare held a meeting at the Jackson Hall on Sunday April 28 to organise the spraying of Harissia Cactus. All landholders were encouraged to attend the meeting as the control of this weed will prevent the dense infestations that can reduce pastures and choke out other pasture species. Around 25 people attended and decided that the next spray day would be in May. Further dates will become available dependant on rain and growth. QCWA Jackson Branch provided a BBQ following this meeting. Attendees provided dessert and it was a great social occasion for all. QCWA Jackson are holding a social event on the last Sunday of every month in an attempt to provide a time and space for community members to get together. All are welcome. Please contact Linda Hyland 0427630270 or [email protected] for more information. Members would like to thank Westrex Services, Jackson for their generous donation to assist with these social events. QCWA Branch meetings are held on second Wednesday of the month at 12.30pm at the Jackson Hall. Please join us if you would like to become a member or meet other women.

The 101st Wallumbilla show was held on May 3 and 4, 2019. Now into it second century, the Show is still demonstrating the care and commitment the community has for its local agricultural sector. Friday was set out for all the regional horse events. There was good attendance from outside competitors which was much appreciated. Saturday was the main day and with the gates open everyone wanted to see what was in store for them this year. The pavilion was set up beautifully and showed off a wide variety of talents from all around the region. The livestock sectors and local horse events showed good attendance again although numbers were down due to the rain earlier that morning.

The day led on with great music and fun in sideshow ally and finished the night with a beautiful bang from the amazing fireworks. A great thank you to all who attended and the help from all the volunteers and sponsors to make the 2019 Wallumbilla Show another success. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2020.

The Faces of Ageing exhibition is a visual exploration of everyday older people in the Maranoa region and beyond. The exhibition challenges the stereotypes associated with ageing.

Photographed by three COTA Community Ambassadors, who are older Queenslanders, the exhibition visually represents the importance of meaningful relationships and community, embracing the present and looking toward the future.

“Every single one of us has our own story, so the lesson is to acknowledge me as an individual – don't just look at the surface and see the wrinkles and grey hair, or frail exterior”

Join us for the opening of the Surat exhibition on Thursday 6 June at 10am. It will be hosted at the Surat on Balonne Gallery, Cobb & Co Changing Station at

62 Burrowes Street, Surat. Morning tea and refreshments will be supplied.

This exhibition is a collaborative project between Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and is being delivered in partnership with the Maranoa Regional Council and the Surat on Balonne Gallery.

Please note that images of deceased Indigenous people are contained within this exhibition
