It’s Time for the Six O’clock SystemBy Bill Smith “Mr3Cushion”, Old School Pool.net

FREQUENTLY THE BALLS will be left in a straight line, resembling the 6 o'clock position of a clock's hands.I place a very high priority on knowing exactly how to aim at the object ball in this situation, because if you don't strike that object ball

properly, the rest of the shot is doomed to failure. Accordingly, this is another ball-aiming and cue-technique system of sorts. The basic information you'll need is how the cue ball caroms off the object ball when certain strokes are applied, and on center-ball as well as high-center cue-ball hits. When you hit the cue ball in the dead center and strike the object ball half-full, (that means you aim the cue-tip at the edge of the first object ball), you achieve a carom of wider angle than you would by applying 12 o'clock English. Also, by keeping the cue tip on the cue ball a fraction of a second longer, you can create a wider carom than with a shorter stroke

All three diagrams show the most common position for this type of shot. The cue ball and the second object ball are in opposite diagonal corners; the first object ball lies at varying distances from the second, and all three are in a straight line for the 6 o'clock look. The setup in Diagram 1 requires you to strike the cue ball dead center and aim the tip of the cue at the left edge of the first ball (in other words, you're aiming for half a ball). Use a normal follow-through, that is, the same length as your bridge.

An added bonus for the correct execution will be a favorable position for your next shot. In Diagram 2, the first object ball is one diamond closer to the cue ball, giving us a different angle into the first cushion. Thus we'll apply 12 o'clock English here, but the hit always remains the same. Your normal stroke will serve well again here. In Diagram 3, use the same hit and English as

in Diagram 2, but use a shorter stroke. That will help keep your cue ball from making too wide a carom and will flatten its path a bit as it rebounds off the first rail. If the second ball lies up the long rail a diamond or so, use a little running English or a different stroke. com for a complete list of each month’s host and their theme.] One of the biggest breakthroughs that I personally made, particularly in big table 9-ball, was to understand when to play position for a ball in the side pocket versus in the corner pocket. Having more of a bar table 8-ball background, it’s very natural and often times preferred to play position for balls in the corner pocket. On the bar table, the corner pocket is much more forgiving and does not require as pinpoint position to get to the next shot. However, once you step up to the big table, your patterns must also. In Diagram 1, take a look at where the 1, 2, 3, and 4 balls are sitting. Beginner players will often play position for these balls in their nearest corner pockets. If they’re not careful, they can turn a connect-

the-dots run out into a hairy one. Whenever possible, consider playing position for balls in the yellow shaded area in the side pocket. For instance, take a look Diagram 2. A careless player may opt to just shoot a stop shot on the 6 ball for position A. If they're lackadaisical, they may just eyeball the shot on the 7 ball. Without being deliberate on their position, they now flirt with the side pocket. The path to get from the 7 to the 8 now becomes much more limited and the shot on the 7 ball also becomes a little more difficult. They’re forced to shoot above

center and just come one rail against the line of the shot for the 8. The player could also roll forward (not shown in diagram) to get on the inside of the 7 ball. This leaves a longer shot on the 7 ball and also adds an extra level of difficulty to the shot. There is also a risk of scratching in the opposite side pocket for position. Instead, when they draw back to play position for the 7 ball in the side pocket, the window to play position for the 8 ball now becomes much greater. The 7 in the side is a much easier shot and it’s natural to move the cue ball three rails for position on the 8. If they draw back too far, they can go forward one rail to come straight across for position. Choosing to play the 7 in side reduces the chances for error. Once I began playing position for these shots in the side pocket, it increased my run out percentages and made them much

more effortless. Look for balls that can go in the side pockets and play position for them three balls ahead. Keep in mind,

there are times when the corner pocket trumps the side pocket. See Diagram 1. A good rule of thumb is to play position for balls in the blue shaded area into the corner pocket. When balls fall in that region, the opening to the side pocket becomes

much narrower. Side pocket shots are less welcoming and often times impossible. If you’re ever in doubt, draw an imaginary line from the center diamond to the side pocket.

If your shot falls in that area, take it up to the corner.Remember to look for patterns that require natural movement of the cue ball. Whenever we have to force/create an angle with the cue ball it makes the shot much more difficult. Look for the nearest pockets to the balls and see if there’s a natural track for position from that pocket. We always want the path of least resistance. DENVER, CO On January 9th, 2010, 15-rack pool leagues held their $300 added “end of the session” tournament that was designated for players that participated in last years Fall session of league. Players got into groups of three and played 15 racks of 10-ball the ghost, which also included their handicaps. The players that finished with the highest scores after 15-racks then made it to the TV table and were guaranteed in the money. The top-three players then played an additional 10-racks to determine their finished places. Avery Pier finished third place with 50 balls, and Doug Conry and Roger Ellis tied with 57 balls a piece leading to a exciting playoff game to determine 1st and 2nd place. Roger went first and pocketed the first fives balls before missing and then Doug broke and ran out to win the championships. Doug was very excited to win the tournament for this was his first time ever competing in ANY tournament. Congratulations to all the players that qualified for this tournament and hats off to Doug for winning his first tournament ever!! 15--Rack Ends SessionBy Kurt HammPORTLAND, OR - Cascade Pool League held their Mid-Season pool tournament at Rodders Dec. 4th-6th with 9-Ball singles on Friday evening, 8-Ball singles on Saturday, and bring your own scotch partner on Sunday...this pool tournament was handicapped by skill level and gave everyone a chance to win!Friday night brought the most players at 26! There were two novice players, 13 "B" players, 7 "A" players and 4 master players... The crowd went wild when open "B" player Joe McCraw sent master player Bill Rosenberry to the loser's side. Joe lost his next match to Damit Dan Rodriguez. Todd Gooch took care of Dan and won the point match. On the losers side the crowd went wild again as open "B" player Lenny Andrew Zuniga took out Bill Rosenberry one out of the money.... too bad Bill better luck next time! Meanwhile, Todd patiently waited for an opponent from the winner wanna be's side... Lenny proceeded to win 2 more matches only losing to Dan Rodriguez... then Dan met the same open "B" player that he beat on the winners side, only this time the outcome was quite different...yes Joe McCraw beat Dan, advancing to the winners side to face Todd Gooch in the Finals.... Happy New Year from Hard Times. Twenty Nine One Pocket players entered the Monthly event. The ‘new year’ brought in new entry fees. $30 for Open players and $20 for local B level players. The new entry fee structure is a reward for the local B level players for supporting so many t o u r n a m e n t throughout 2009. Robert Aldana

continued to be a force in these monthly tournaments. Mr. Aldana went undefeated and took 1st place and $280 in prize money for this One Pocket Event.

The Nine Ball event had 39 entries and also featured a new entry fee structure for the same B level players. Billy Palmer and Austin Murphy fought it

out in the Hot Seat match and then again in the Finals which went to true double e l i m i n a t i o n . Young Austin winning the first set and then losing a hard fought Hill-Hill finale.

Sheena Mendoza Story Sheena was one of those kind of

persons that when she walked into a room not only did everybody

look for her but every one smiled cause she was such a beautiful person inside & out. She had that soft non-threatening voice & everyone called her a friend. She was a regular at Hot Shots Billiards which was her favorite

spot in Beaverton, Or . It was like a second home to her since most of

the customers were like family. She grew up & went to school in Hillsboro,

O r . She even worked at Hot Shots for awhile where she learned to hone her game of pool. She was not so competitive as she was comfortable with the environment and around the fact she was around people she endeared. She later went to school to become a hair stylist and most recently had been working at Great Clips in Hillsboro,Or as an assistant manager. In late November a terrible tragedy befell her where her life was wrongfully taken by an emotionally disturbed ex-boyfriend who she was desperately trying to keep her distance from. She spoke openly to many people of her worries and about his serious threats to her life. He took her life at the young age of 20. Her father passed away too, just weeks before, in an unexpected death that left the family in a financial mess. She is survived by a mother and a aunt. At the funeral service that was held immediately afterward, it was obvious by the numbers in the room and the overwhelming sounds of tears how much she will be sorely missed. Even though she was soft spoken she was so full of spunk & opinion. She had an amazing deep spirit & a core feeling for people’s needs & feelings. She always seemed wise beyond her years. Definitely, a soul that had much to live for & deserved to live so much longer. Even though the family is stricken with grief, they would like to convey a message. Domestic abuse is not always readily obvious even close friends or family. Much of the time local authorities, agencies, and police’s hands are tied until something serious has already occurred. When it seems a friend is expressing such worries, sometimes we need to listen very carefully and maybe step in to do whatever we can. Lend a hand, possibly emergency shelter or whatever we can to save a life. You never really know when you wont get a second chance. A group of close friends is organizing a memorial tournament in her honor and to raise much needed funds to assist the Mendoza family get through this tough time. They had to spend virtually their last dollar just to cover the two funerals that occurred in such a short period of time. They did not have the assets nor did they have the income to do this. In addition, their income to cover basic needs has been drastically reduced by the deaths of these two family members. Therefore, proceeds from Entry fees, raffle tickets & the silent auction will be going to the Sheena Mendoza Family Memorial Fund. The event will be held at Hot Shots Family Billiards in Beaverton, or on February 6th & 7th .Starting at 9AM. It is going to include a silent auction raffle with lots of prizes and coverage by a local TV station. Local Police officers will be also be present to give information on how you can help others in domestic abuse situations in hopes of preventing another tragedy. Her fellow co-workers from Great Clips will be giving haircuts as well with proceeds being donated. Any one interested in making a donation can do this by going to any Branch of a US bank or by taking it to the counter at Hot Shots Billiards. Hot Shots is proud to have raised & donated $700.00 so far. We ask everyone who knew of her or knows of anyone in a troubled family situation to please come & show your support. April 3-4, 2010, Las Vegas, Nevada Every year statistically 5.3 million women are abused and 500,000 women are stalked by an intimate partner in the United States. Of those abused 1,200 are killed by their abusers. Domestic Violence touches all facets of the abused person’s life. It is a personal, sociological and professional tragedy. It affects not only the abused, but their family, children, and friends.In the workplace alone the stats are astounding. 96% of those abused can directly attribute problems in the workplace due to their abuse, 74% are harassed while at work by their abuser and 54% miss days at work not due to normal illness but because of being abused. Abuse discourages a person from becoming all they can be and expand and develop their natural talents and abilities. (*stats from the American Institute on Domestic Violence).Being our best, making the most of our abilities and passion for pool is something in the cue sports community that binds us all together. Imagine wanting to play your best, but something or someone specifically bound your arms, immobilized you where you couldn’t even pick up a cue, how frustrating and helpless you might feel. People who are abused feel that way everyday mentally towards life. They need support to rebuild their lives. Shelters all across the U.S. are instrumental in helping those abused regain the life they lost or may have never had before.On April 3-4, 2010 the 1st Annual Western Women’s Charity 9-Ball Challenge is taking place to benefit the Shade Tree Shelter in Las Vegas, NV. The event will take place at Rum Runner’s Las Vegas, immediately following the well known bar table event The Andy Mercer Memorial

Tournament.The $1100 added, women’s only handicapped 9-Ball event will have a maximum 32 player field this inaugural year and feature a player auction Friday, April 2 at 8 pm also at Rum Runner’s. The Free Community Christmas Dinner went well this year. We had plenty of help & a lot of it was spearheaded by our own local pool players. Suppliers & vendors provided the majority of the financial contributions. We served Christmas dinner to 280 people & collected $340 cash for the Red Cross of Idaho. When everything was said & done, there was an additional $82 of donations available for the fund. David & I will personally fill in the difference to make a total donation of $500. Well Christmas will soon be upon us and Toadstool Billiard Cafe recently held their quarterly tournament. As a preliminary event and due to the holiday, we put together a Turkey Shoot. The entry fee was one slim dollar and an unwrapped toy for Toys For Tots. We had a great turnout and collected lots of toys for a great cause. However, this was not your ordinary event. First of all, the fame played was more of a skill shot/carnival game with pool balls than an actual game usually played on Friday night. Everyone shot well and the competition went down to a shoot-off with four players shooting for first and second. In the end it would be T.J. Hadley taking first and Morgan Hunt winning second. Oh, I guess I forgot to mention at the beginning that first prize was a live turkey. We really had a good time. I must say the turkey was given a pardon by T.J.’s – or “Turkey Joe” as we now call him – two young daughters and now resides in the backyard at their home. I am not sure that his wife has seen the humor in this though.

On Saturday morning we began registration for the tournament. The weather kept some folks home, but at 11 am, we had 40 players who braded the snow to come and play for an $1,800 purse.We had players from three states show for this event. They all showed some great talent. Matches were played on seven and eight foot Valley tables with a fast cloth and tight rails. There were many matches that went to the hill in each race to 4 on both sides in this double elimination tournament.Players battled into the evening competing for the top eight places and Calcutta money plus the added money by the house. Larry Gates came out on top with Ryan Minegar winning second and Willie Alvarez taking third. Local player Suzanne Mackey made an impressive run deep into the field to finish in fourth place. Toadstool Cafe served up some good homestyle cooking and beverages for the players throughout the day. The atmosphere was nice, the games were nice, and the

players were awesome – what a great event this is growing into. We recently got sanctioned by BCA and now have an in-house mixed 8 ball league going with several youth players as well and more leagues to be forming in the very near future. Scotch Doubles in January and a traveling 8 ball mixed will come in February So come on out for one of our Friday night events, quarterly tournaments or just some good food, friendly service and shoot pool in a great place.A special thanks to all the players who continually support our events.We will be starting a Toadstool

inhouse Monday night mixed scotch doubles league on Monday, January 18th that will run for 6 weeks…9-ball & 8-ball (3 games each). We will be hosting a mixed scotch doubles VALENTINE tournament on Saturday, February 13th…. $50 per couple gets you into the tournament & dinner for two. Special menu choices include 10-12 oz Prime Rib or Seafood dinner (shrimp, tillapia, & scallops….all breaded & fried or grilled in white wine, butter & lemon) or Bourbon Chicken & Ribs served with salad, roll, baked potato or steak fries, homemade baked beans & “desert 4 two”….probably cheesecake or berry crisp…..MMMMMMMM! Sometimes a better pool game comes from education or an experience outside of the billiard parlor. The scene takes place in a physical therapy clinic during the summer of 2002. I had injured my knee from an aggressive training plan focused on running. My knee had been so touchy that I saw an orthopedic surgeon who practically laughed me out of his office. He wrote a prescription of

four sessions of PT (physical therapy) and sent me on my way. The good doctor’s diagnosis was simple—my buttocks, quads, and core muscles were weak causing motion in my hips which made my knee wobble while running. The cure was to strengthen those muscles, not work on my knee. Being the summer, evidently vacation time for body workers, I was actually lucky to have three different therapists attend to me during my four PT sessions. Each one had a different personality and style of teaching me, the student, about curing my knee pain by strengthening my supporting muscles. I learned of balance from one, flexibility from another, and strength training from the third. During one of my sessions, I felt like I was being bombarded with strength training exercises. Do twenty reps of this three times per day. Do 30 of these three days per week and stretch that way for 5 minutes three times per day, and on and on. Stress mounting, I burst out, “When am I going to have time to run when I’m doing all these crazy exercises? How long will it take before I can run pain free? Do I have to keep doing these stupid things forever? ” Mr. PT (Pretentious Taskmaster) pacified my irritation with a soothing analogy that I’ll never forget. “Pretend you’ve just been stranded on a deserted isle in the tropics. Think Survivor season one. You’ve made a smart choice by building a hut on the edge of the beach. Close to fishing and swimming, away from the jungle dangers and the best view too. You will have to hike into the jungle to collect your drinking water of course. Just imagine forging a trail to the fresh water stream with a machete, hacking back foliage and establishing a good foot trail to tote your water bucket back and forth. Blazing that trail will be a lot of work. It will take many trips back and forth stomping down the path and hacking back plants to create a trouble free trail. Then after some time, you’ll have an excellent path to traverse day after day. After some time of using the trail, you’ll notice a few leaves dangling in your way or a branch here and there poking out into the path. When you see this happening, you’ll want to grab your machete and do a little house keeping. It won’t be near as much work as making the trail, but it will be good to do this once and a while as maintenance.” I was grinning before he spelled out the concluding sentence. “So all of this physical therapy will be lots of work for the next six or eight weeks, but from then on, you may want to pick a couple of these exercises and do a little brush up every couple of weeks.” No problem Mr. PT (Positive Thinker)! I’ll bust through these things to get strong and remember to brush up on them before a pain in my knee tells me to. As a professional billiard instructor, I have told this story to many pool players who were suffering from an ineffective stroke. Put in some hard work now, get the stroke developed that will carry your game to the next level and beyond, and do some reminder tune-ups when you feel like you’re in a funk or slump. Right the stroke and your pool game will sharpen right up again.

ANSWER: When I played in my 1st live ESPN match in Manila this last May, I was a little overwhelmed with the amount of people who were watching in the crowd plus the 20 million people watching via television. Mark Haddad (my fiancé) escorted me into the arena and the last little bit of advice was to only look at the table NOTHING else, and it worked! I won my live TV match 5-2 against number two-ranked Pilipino player Iris Ranola. So, in reality it is only you and the pool table. If you immerse yourself in what others are doing then you won’t be focused on your own abilities. It’s a discipline to try and stay focused on what you are doing- easier said then done but you must fight your own demons and try every time you get to the table. Don’t worry about what others are doing- if you see them trying to shark you then remember they are showing weakness and let it go, then concentrate on what you are doing. Best of luck to all, Viper

The Broken Rack in Emeryville, CA was the site of The West Coast Women’s Regional 9-Ball Tour’s fifth and final stop November 21-22, 2009. The stop brought thirty of the tour’s players out to play and get paid. It was wonderful to see so many spectators coming by to show their support of the ladies as well. This event was bittersweet for so many of us. We were ending our successful 2009 but looking forward to an even more successful future for the lady pool players all along the West Coast. Heather Pulford had another

great showing, finishing in third place, as she defeated Kim Benson and Deborah Cullen before being defeated by Eleanor Callado. She picked herself up and won four matches in a row against Holly Robinson, Kim Benson,

Tracy Palma and Revelina Um to come face-to-face against Mary Rakin, who stopped her from further pursuit of a title. Mary Rakin really needs no introduction and finding herself in the finals at yet another tour stop was no surprise to anyone either. She started the tournament off with the same winning ways that she ended the tour stop the month before. She posted wins over Bonnie Plowman, Holly Robinson, Caryl Powell, Tracy Palma and then had a tough hot-seat match; going hill-hill against Eleanor Callado. She earned her way back to the finals by defeating Heather Pulford 7-2. She found herself taking the first set of the final match 7-4. So it was one set down and one to go. Mary finished in second place after the 7-2 2nd set loss. Our champion, Eleanor Callado, came back from a recent WPBA event pumped up and ready to play. She stayed focused and sure-stroking the entire event. She went through

her opponents; Kirsten Karim, Revelina Um, Heather Pulford, Michelle Rakin, Mary Rakin confidently, earning her way into

the finals. She fought hard in the first set but lost 7-4; but she came back strong in the second set, earning herself one of the tour stop titles for 2009. The Broken Rack has been a supporter of pool in the bay area since they opened their doors. They’ve been instrumental in supporting women’s pool specifically. They provide a beautiful environment with delicious food and drinks. The California Billiard Club (CBC) in Mountain View, CA, held its 1st Annual Chet Itow Memorial Tournament on January 16 and 17, 2010 to commemorate the life of a pool enthusiast that was taken from the billiard community by his second bout with cancer. The weekend started off with a Friday night mini tournament with a buy-in of $25, single elimination, race to 5. A 64 player field packed the house, and after all the smoke cleared Jerry Matchin and Deo Alpojora battled for the top prize. Jerry Matchin came out the victor and started his weekend ahead $600. Deo Alpojora took a second place win with $400. To everyone’s surprise, 153 players walked through the door for the main event. Chris Swart and Ben Farmer (Owners of CBC) started the morning off with a great selection for breakfast. Chris Swart gave a thoughtful speech and introduced Chet Itow’s wife and family to the players. Chris thanked all the players and sponsors that helped make the event as large as it was and to top it all off announced that Pete Tonkin had generously donated a

custom Tonkin cue for raffle. The cue was valued at $1,200, and worth every penny. As a small token to the players, CBC gave every player that entered the tournament a free T-shirt that had a wonderful snap shot of Chet playing pool on table #6 (his favorite table) and recognition of the sponsors.

The tournament started around 1 p.m. and Chris and Janet Okamoto made sure the matches were flowing on all 30 gold crown tables until they were down to 48 players. The amazing thing was the last matches ended around 11:30pm and Chris keep the room open until 5am so players could match up for action.

11:30 a.m. Sunday morning brought back 48 players. The tournament was down to its final 8 players by 8:00 p.m. The final 8 all had matches that went case game, and by 3:30 a.m. the finals began. In the hot seat was Max Eberle who was matched up with Gilbert Arellano. These 2 matched up earlier to determine the hot seat and that match went hill-hill with Max the victor. Even at 3:30 a.m., there were still 50 people eager to see the ending. The match was a nail biter with both players shooting well and playing great safeties. At 5:00 a.m., hill-hill match, Max Eberle survived. 1st place for Max was $3,000 and Gilbert received $1,400 for 2ndplace. The total prize fund was $13,650 and 48 players were paid out. This was an amazing tournament that was handled professionally by California Billiard Club. Ben Farmer and CBC staff handled the bar and kitchen without hiccups. In preparation for the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship scheduled May 17-22, 2010, CueSports International (CSI) would like to announce nine qualifiers for the event will take place in the U.S and Canada. The U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship will be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada immediately following the World Pool Masters and in conjunction with the 34th Annual BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships. It is also a recognized BCA point event and will feature the top men and women players from the U.S. and around the world. Participating regional tours and a select group of independent host rooms will each send one player to the $25,000 added national 10-Ball event. To play in a qualifier spot hosted by a regional tour, participants must be a member of that tour or meet the tour’s membership requirements. The following tours are involved with the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship qualifier program: The Desert Classic Tour of Arizona, The Great Southern Billiards Tour and the Ozone Billiards Predator Tour. The Desert Classic Tour and the Great Southern Billiards Tour will include their U.S Open 10-Ball Championship qualifier spot at one of their regularly scheduled tour stops this spring. The Importance Of The StanceBy Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

Have you ever examined your own pool stance? If you have, did you think it is okay the way it is, or did you think it could use some i m p r o v e m e n t ? Do you know the difference

between a good stance and a bad stance? Does the stance make any difference, anyway? First off, let’s identify the purpose for developing a “good” stance. A good stance will provide two basic elements: balance and comfort. Now let’s examine that first element; balance. In relation to your line of aim (the invisible line the cue stick is stroked along) there are three basic ways the feet can be positioned: The first is the totally closed position. The second is the totally open position. And the third is at some angle between totally closed and totally open.

To understand all this, you have to first imagine the totally closed stance as being that where one foot is placed directly in front of the other, just as you would have to do if you were to walk on a narrow beam. Now imagine keeping your feet in that straight line while leaning over to the side to sight down a pool cue. Would it be easy to balance yourself? Of course it wouldn’t. (If you were actually on a high beam, you would probably fall to your death – ouch!) Now we’ll examine the totally open stance. Imagine this stance as one where you fully face the direction of the shot, with your feet and the front of your body at a 90° angle to the line of aim. And again imagine keeping your feet in that position while you lean over to the side to sight down a cue, and again you will see how far off-balance you would be. So obviously the foot placement you need for balance is neither totally closed, nor totally open. You need something between those two extremes. A good balance angle will be anywhere between 25° and 45° in relation to the line of aim.

Anything beyond those parameters will be either too closed, or too open. Now we’ll look at the second element in a good stance; comfort. It is important to adopt a style that is going to be comfortable, otherwise your back and legs will fatigue quickly and you will be going home early. But as long as your foot placement provides good balance, everything else in the stance should be left up to you. Don’t let anyone else tell you that you must stand higher or lower over the cue, or that you must bend or lock your legs, or that you must point your toes this way or that way. There are no “musts” when it comes to finding a comfortable style. Only you know what feels most comfortable to you. There are always exceptions to every rule, and the stance is no different. There will be times when you have to stretch for certain shots, or jack up for others, and the above advice will be out the window. But you should limit yourself to those times, only. On all the other shots, you should be striving for balance and comfort.

by her 2 children in Great Falls, Montana. Jamie Lynn came on board with Bob Graeser last year

On January 14th, he stopped in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and spent a little free time helping the senior citizens down at the senior center's pool room, then he spent a couple of fun hours with the kids at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club. Mr. Lee talked to them about rules, etiquette and the fundamentals, as well as showing them a few trick shots. He played a few games with some of them, before he left. Quite a few kids were there for the event. His time was well spent and greatly appreciated. Also donating their time and efforts to make this event a success, were Gene La Viness, of Crown Cues, who regularly keeps the club's pool cues tipped and functional and Josh Homes, of One Billiards, who was kind enough to level the tables for the event. A big thank you to all involved in making this event such a great success for the kids. When people come together for a good cause, great things can happen.

HEader BREMERTON, WA On the weekend of January 16th and 17th, Stixx & Stones Billiards hosted its first Annual 9 Ball for the New Year Tournament. Travelling across the Narrows Bridge to East Bremerton, WA, forty-five talented players converged to meet for what would play out to be an intense competition of skill with a touch of luck. Play began at high noon, beginning with Stan Tourangeu and Damian Pongpanik, two very experienced and revered players here in the Pacific Northwest. First game of the day went to Stan. With up to eight matches playing at a time, the spectators present were well entertained and in awe of the amazing skill exhibited during gameplay. As matches continued throughout the day and late into the night, out of forty five that arrived to meet the tournament challenge, twelve would return the next day. With twelve of the best players of the tournament returning for the finals, Sunday proved no less intense. Four thrilling matches included Junior Sarconsillo vs. Val Alvarado, Eddie Carrido vs. James Gifford, and Shawn McIntosh vs. Scott Thurston and Eddie Mataya vs. Rick Hodges. Battle of the Eddies for point proved to be electrifying and truly intense as Eddie Carrido went head to head with Eddie

Mataya. Since only one Eddie can stand victorious, Eddie Mataya came through as winner of the matches. On the other side of the bracket was Stan Tourangeu. Not wanting to be denied the opportunity for a chance at first place, Stan,

having lost his second match, plowed through the other players to face off against Eddie Mataya. Up to this point, Eddie stood undefeated. The tournament being double elimination, Eddie would have to just beat Stan once, but Stan would have to beat Eddie twice in match play. In their first set of matches, it truly was incredible as the two players battled back and forth. Eddie played brilliantly, but in the end succumbed to

Stan. For the final match up of the tournament, it was a race to seven, with each player having lost once. The final match up was more straightforward. Eddie was only able to win one game against Stan. Winner of Stixx & Stones 9 Ball for the New Year was Stan Tourangeu, with a score 7-1. Annie Gay will be hosting a Women's 8 Ball Tournament at Jake's Bar & Grill in Salem, Oregon Saturday February 20th. The entry is $10, double elimination. Open players race to 3 and master's race to 5. Jake's will match the pot and the field is limited to 64 players. Start time is 10 am, Jake's will open at 9 am. Winter Warm Up

The 30th Annual Montana Coin Operators State 8 Ball Championships will be at the Holiday Inn Grand in Billings, Montana. The 2010 State 8-Ball Championships will also be adding $25,000 prize money (see ad below) and is sponsored by Crown Royal and Bud Light. There has also been a change in the dates which used to be the last weekend in April has been moved to the last weekend in March 2010. Play starts on Friday night March 26th at 7pm and will continue play through several rounds in the winner side. With 2 divisions, A and B each for men and women. Pool players come from all across Montana by qualifying in local bars. There is no entry fee to the tournament. Entries are determined by an 8 week qualifying bracket each winner of each week plays in the finals and the top 2 players are entered into the State Championship. The winner takes A Division and

second place takes B Division. The same process is also held for the women’s division.

This year the OTBnTV crew will be on hand to film all the excitement. The tournament will be Live Streamed Friday, Saturday

and Sunday so even if you couldn’t make it to the tournament you will be able to be a spectator anyway. Besides the Live Streaming there will be a Live Chat where you can talk about the play, ask questions or make comments. Your feedback is all given in real time. After the tournament is over and everybody has gone home you will still be able to watch all the Live matches through our Video on Demand. It will be available immediately following each match and you can access it through www.ustream.tv/channel/otbntv-live.Don’t miss any of the action!
