This month we start a new series of Bewdley Musings from Neville Farmer:

View from the Redthorne .....Ludlow has its castle but what draws the crowds today is food. Stow-on-the-Wold ispicture-postcard-pretty but the antique shops give it the edge. Bewdley has the river and anunrivalled programme of events but, as a friend asked me the other day, what is its UniqueSelling Point from day to day?

The other day I spent some time soaking up the art that formed the focus of the BewdleyOpen Studios weekend. I was astonished. This was no cobbled-together outpouring ofenthusiastic hobbyists. The paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture and ceramics fromover 50 local artists were quite outstanding, diverse andinspirational. Over the weekend at venues around the town it wasclear that arts and crafts are flourishing in Bewdley... and not justfor one weekend per year.

Bewdley is already a centre for arts and crafts but it’s just notshouting it out loudly enough. Let’s turn every empty shopwindow into an art exhibit! Let’s make the crafts market weeklyand bigger! How about the pubs, cafes and restaurant devotingpart of the wall space to selling local art? As someone suggestedat a meeting recently, let’s turn the old Phipps and Pritchard officeinto “The Bewdley Shop” selling local arts, crafts and produce. Themore people see Bewdley as a focal point for artists and artisans, the more they will come, to the benefit of the whole town.

One down - three to go!The team from Bewdley Baptist Church which isagoing to the Dominican Republic for two weeksto work on a building site for homeless Haitianrefugees have raised its first £2,500. This isenough to build one new home and the target isto raise funds for another three. Every singlepenny that they raise will go towards building thenew homes – the team members look after thecost of flights and accommodation themselves.Like to help?Promises AuctionHave you anything that the team can auction when they hold a promises auction inSeptember. That smell takes me back a bit……

As I walked up the road from town the other day I was transported back tomy childhood. I was walking back home from school with my brother in thehot sunshine back in the days when a six year old could safely walk alongroads as yet relatively traffic-free. The memory was brought on by the scentof the flowers on a nearby hedge; my way home all those years ago wasalong suburban roads lined with dark green clipped privet hedges. By Julythe hedges were spattered with white strong-smelling flowers, and the smellis forever associated in my mind with imminent holidays. Nearby were somelittle bindweed flowers. We used to fit them over our noses and hold themthere with a sharp inhalation. This sometimes had the effect of jamming a bug up one’s nose, but who cared? They smelled delicious. Lawn mowings, lime tree flowers, peony flowers allcombine to carry me back to Northamptonshire. I bet I’m not the only one. Come on,‘fessup and tell us what pings your memory. We’ll put together a page next month if we getenough contributions.

I was pleased to receive more contributions on another subject altogether this month. Mychance remark about Stanley Baldwin, Robert Barbour’s reply and last month’s letter fromStanley Baldwin’s grandson have brought two more very thoughtful contributions. Do keepthem coming; it’s good to hear what the town thinks about our famous son of Bewdley and ifand how we should remember him.

Lastly, thank you to everyone who told me how much they enjoyed the colourful cover lastmonth. I’ve passed the compliments on to Gary, who is usually responsible for our coverpictures and took last month’s - apparently swinging from a lamp post judging by the angle! Ihope you enjoy his cover this month too.

I thought I would write about somethingdifferent this month – smells. We oftenencourage the children who come onschool trips to use all their senses toexperience the forest and have someentertaining and eye-opening activities tohelp them do this. That plants have smells atall is quite a shock and there is no shortageof interesting material. This month you should be able to enjoy twoof the strongestWyre Forest smells. First, the good news. Honeysuckle is one of themost fragrant of our wild flowers. Itswoody stems twine up obliging trees tocapture the sunlight that is in short supplyon the forest floor. You may only becomeaware of the plant when you walk into apocket of sweet scent as you pass under ornear it.The nectar is popular withbutterflies, moths and many other insects, and the little dormouse also feeds on theflowers as well as using the easily-shreddedbark to weave its nest.

Now the bad news. The stinkhornis a fungus with attitude. It looksand smells quite disgusting.Thetoadstool appears pushing throughthe leaf litter looking like a whitishegg covered in gelatinous slime. Ithas a white stem with a ribbed

head covered in dark olive-coloured slimewhich gives off its unmistakeable smell –pungent and penetrating, similar to rottingmeat. The smell attracts flies, which land onthe head and pick up the slime on their legs. The toadstool thus achieves its objective asthe slime contains tiny spores which theflies will then carry to other suitablegrowing places. This fungus is quite commonso use your nose and track them down!

"and some there be,which have nomemorial..."

If memorials are seen asendorsements of virtue, there would be a massive

cull of statues in our great cities; no PrimeMinister has an unscathed reputation and itis easy to understand why Baldwin's sufferedin the 1940s, with the backlash against thepre-war National Government. The surveyconducted by Robert Barbour 20 years agowould have comprehended many whose liveswere influenced by events of that time; butinformed opinion has moved on. LordBaldwin's claims for his grandfather deserveconsideration.

Baldwin dominated government for most ofthe inter-war period, a time ofunprecedented economic, political and socialunrest, deep fears of Bolshevik revolutionand the rise of the Dictators. All politiciansreflected a public mood reluctant tocontemplate war and those who wrote post-war history chose to ignore his early moves

to rearmament.

He has rightly been given credit forencouraging the formation of the 1stminority Labour government, demonstratingthat the party could operate in a democraticparliamentary system. His handling of theAbdication revealed tact, determination andpossibly a quiet determination to lose anunsatisfactory monarch. A reconciler whosought agreement rather than confrontationhe was capable of ruthlessness whennecessary, well illustrated by the underminingof Lloyd George and his attack on the Pressbarons. More shrewd than the image hechose to portray, Baldwin was the firstpolitician to master the new medium ofradio, and he was probably the only PM ofthe century who retired at a time of hischoosing, unencumbered by illness orrejection by party, parliament or theelectorate.

It is time to bury the myths and rememberStanley Baldwin as a most effective leader inthe most difficult of times.

James Hickson

The continuing debate on whether ourformer Prime Minister, Earl Baldwin ofBewdley, should have a memorial in the townin which he was born and which herepresented in Parliament for most of theinter war years, shows that the power ofspin endures. Politicians to the present daycontinue to rubbish their predecessors fortheir own aggrandizement and in Churchill'scase, his accusation in The Gathering Storm, written immediately after the war, that theprevious National Government led byBaldwin was 'feckless' is, frankly, self-servingand factually inaccurate.

As Prime Minister in 1935, Baldwin, succeeding the potentially disastrous pacifismof the Ramsey MacDonald led government, immediately set in motion a programme to

equip the RAF with modern aircraft andsupported Radar development at a cost thatmany at the time believed we could notafford. Churchill' s famous 'This Was TheirFinest Hour' speech in 1940 could not havebeen uttered without Baldwin's prescience.

I agree wholeheartedly with the present EarlBaldwin of Bewdley's exhortation that weshould all be proud of the wise andprincipled statesman who steered thecountry through the turbulent inter waryears. It is somewhat bizarre that amemorial to Bewdley's most famous son wasdedicated in Westminster Abbey in 1997 andyet there is an ongoing debate whetherStanley Baldwin is worthy enough forpermanent recognition in his home town.

Kevin Leedham-Green

Stanley Baldwin... the debate continues

Mentor LinkLocal Children’s charity Mentor Link continues to go from strengthto strength and recently has asked the parents of mentored childrento give feedback on the service.

A mentor is there primarily for the young people and someone to listen to and supportthem through various issues they may be facing for example family breakdown. Theindependence of these adult mentors is the key factor for its success. They offer a differentperspective, a listening ear and a confidential service.

One parent recently wrote in to say,

“ I would like to thank you and your team at Mentor Link for all your time support andpatience. It has been a valuable outlet for her coping with friendship issues as well as theseparation of myself and her dad. H has a good support network at home in her closefamily and Mentor Link has helped because it is totally independent and allows her toexpress her opinions and feelings to someone who allows her to talk freely… She has copedfantastically through a very tough year and have no doubt that Mentor Link helped herachieve this. ”

For further information on how you can help support the charity please call01299 400616 or [email protected]

Glamourous Life of an Opera Singer Part 5Here’s another tale from Mozart's Magic Flute. This story is aboutanother tenor; one of the Armed Men. The armed men tell Taminolater in the opera that he must keep his vow of silence, and, inparticular, must not talk to his beloved Pamina, which upsets her somuch that she sings a long though beautiful aria just to let us knowhow fed up she is.

This Armed Man was a very jolly fellow - always ever so friendly andfull of jokes. In rehearsals he used to amuse us all by changing one of his lines from, "Youmay see her, but you may not speak with her," to (you've guessed it!) "You may see her, butyou may not sleep with her." Ho Ho Ho !!!

Come the first night, and what does he say for the assembled audience's benefit? That'sright, and when he came off stage, he didn't even realise he'd done it.

I did something like that myself once, as the Gaoler in Tosca. It was the second productionof Tosca I had been in, and it wasn't long since the first production; this one in the originallanguage.

The second production was in English, and when the cue came for me to tell the prisonerCavaradossi he could write a message for his beloved Tosca before being taken off to beshot, instead of singing him the single word, "Write", out popped the word, "Scrivete" ! Afrisson went around the audience, and our Cavaradossi struggled to regain his composurefor his superb rendition of 'E lucevan le Stelle."

He still got shot!

Free plants, next year!Well we’re about half way through the growingseason now and there will be shortly anabundance of seeds; prototypes of our next cropthis or next year. Seeds remain dormant until allof the right conditions for growth conspiretogether and hey presto we’re off again. This isreally the most efficient and cheapest way ofraising plants in quantities.

Depending on your choice of annuals or biennialschose a dry and sunny day and pick from clean andhealthy stock the seed heads or pods you want. After drying, clean and label and then store forfurther use in a cool and airy environment.

Life, as ever, has its complications and there’snothing different here as we find there are four orfive types of seeds each having differingrequirements for germination.

The first type is small and dust like, needing to beplanted fairly quickly as they will not retain theircapability to germinate over long periods of time. The next class are those seeds that develop hardcasings on storage to protect their fleshy interiorsand will need soaking before germination.

Rally hard cased seeds require cracking: you mayrecall having to chip sweet peas to get them goingor freezing and thawing fruit stones.

Some seeds contain a lot of oil and do not storewell at all; as soon as the oil is gone effectively sois the seeds chance of germination; so sow as soonas possible.

Finally we have the winged seeds, which will needto have their means of transportation removedbefore sowing.

Ground preparation is important; a fine tilth, nottoo wet and heavy, the right weather conditions. You may consider early plantings in doors or thegreenhouse, but do enjoy growing next year’splants for yourself and others with little expenseother than effort.

Tails of a Veterinary Practice – lifeat Riverside Vets

as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

This month saw a very exciting rescuefrom a neighbouring garden.

A mother duck had nested in anenclosed walled garden and hadmanaged to hatch ten ducklings! Theywere very noisy and I’m not sure I’dhave liked to have that many kittensaround me, but the mother duckseemed very pleased with herself.

Unfortunately as the garden wascompletely enclosed, when she cameto lead her offspring to the river theduck was unable to find a way to getthem out of the garden. She managedto alert one of our Veterinary Nursesby quacking loudly and the nurse wentoff in search of someone to help.Thankfully a kindly neighbour let thenurses into the garden, so they wereable to help the mother duck.

From my perch on the balcony I wasable to watch a great game of hide andseek as the ducklings hid in many smallspaces and the mother duck rushedaround making lots of noise.

Eventually she managed to get the ideaand headed off out of the gate withfour ducklings following her closely.

The Veterinary Nurses quickly releasedthe six they had managed to catch andthe family set off en masse. They weregently ushered across the road and allmade it safely over the side and ontothe river. They werelast seen sailingdownriver in a longline.

Better go now andhave my cat nap,

Gavin.

BEST 100 Camp(Bewdley, EveryoneSleeping in Tents)

For the Centenary of Girlguiding locallywe held a camp for Brownies, Guides andLeaders. Not quite 100 people, but hey, there were at least 100 legs and arms.Friday 2nd July saw our openingceremony at Rhydd Scout Camp Site withribbons in centenary colours radiatingfrom the flag pole and hoisting a bespokeflag.Of course the Brownies didn’t sleep and, would you believe it, the Guides complainedabout their noisy neighbours. The next dayRainbows visited and circus skills, doingcrafty things and learning sign language werethe order of the day. After a party tea with birthday cake, the‘circus man’ demonstrated his own superbskills (with some guiding input from a coupleof plate spinners and a uni-cyclist). He lit thecamp fire with his fire-eating torches. Howscary was that? After a lot of singing and hotdogs the Rainbows went home and theBrownies went to bed and, to everyone’s

relief, needed to be woken for breakfast. The rain kept away for the closing ceremony, which took on an international theme. KateDalloway, Megan Williams and Nannie Muller-Jones renewed their promises as YoungLeaders. Kate and Nannie were alsopresented with Baden Powell Challengebadges; the highest award for Guides. AmyOsborne won the ‘design a badge’competition and everybody who took part inthe weekend received their unique badge. Thanks to all who made BEST happen!Brenda GoodeA very proud and privileged DistrictCommissioner

Books We HateWe’ve turned a few heads in the libraryrecently with our display ‘Books We Hate’. Itwasn’t a mistake. Some might question the wisdom of this, when we are supposed to be encouragingpeople to use their library; how will they feelif they walk through the door and find theirfavourite books are the targets of a hatecampaign? The clue is in the heading; love and hate areopposite sides of the same coin, so anythingloved by one person is bound to beprofoundly disliked by someone else - thinkMarmite. On seeing the display people havebegun conversations with staff and otherusers, and added their own contributions. Some have taken books off the stand toborrow and form their own opinion! If one of your favourites appeared on thisdisplay (one of mine did) this does not meanyou are stupid, misguided or without taste. You have taken part in one of humankind’sgreatest attempts - making sense of itsexistence.

I hope it is still running inAugust. If not, pop in andrequest it in the future. Itcan be quite cathartic!

On the 15th June. Frazzle and I set off forLeamington and The Guide Dog Centre. Wearrived and I was driven into Warwick by one ofthe trainers who would explain what Arty wasresponding to as we followed him, with his trainer,at a discreet distance. With pride, I watched himguide his trainer through the crowds, avoiding theobstacles that are so prevalent these days (Aboards, shop displays in the street) as well as bowwindows, lampposts etc. He confidently led thetrainer 'to the chair' in Boots and was only fazedby a passerby insisting on patting him! Pleaseremember that when in harness, dogs areworking and should not be distracted.

Back at the centre, I met Arty who recognised meand nearly bowled me over! Over a cup of tea,his trainer and I chatted. It was a busy area andArty just lay on the floor watching the people anddogs pass to and fro. He looked up at me as ifsaying "This is my world now. Thanks for comingto see me and the good times we shared." It wastime to move on, and I did feel a pang as I saidgoodbye, but Frazzle was bathed and ready forher lunch, so it was back to the car and home.

The hot weather has encouraged us to go outearly and late in the day and we have shared somegreat sights. The last was a breeding pair of GreatCrested Grebe. I have also met some superpeople. More of them another day.

P.S. Latest news of Arty is that he went toSouthampton at the beginning of July for hisadvanced training of 8 to 10 weeks, after whichhe will hopefully be paired with his potentialowner.

Regatta SeasonRegatta season is well and trulyunderway and by the time you readthis races will have been won and lostat Bewdley Regatta.

The rowing rewards system involvespots and points. Pots are usuallytankards made either of pewter orpottery, and marked with the date andoccasion.

They are given to the whole crew of awinning race, and can accumulate intoloft-fuls of boxes over the years I amtold!

Points are awarded for sweep oar (onelarge oar per person) or sculling (twosmaller oars, one in each hand) andmean that the successful rower climbsa ladder of points, with the intentionthat competitors of similar standingrow against each other.

Juniors row in age groups, the youngestbeing around J11...scullers of 11 yearsold or less.

At this age youngsters can only scullbecause it is a symmetrical activity.Sweep oar necessarily involves anelement of twisting which is not goodfor the growing spine!

The crew of 16 year old boys who wonour Pub'n Club regatta in June are nowrowing regularly in an 8 and doing well!

Dear readers,

This month I want to tell you about someevents for our young people that will takeplace on a couple of hot August nights thissummer. If you are too old to indulge inthe festivities, then take consolation fromthe fact that for two nights at least you willknow exactly where the kids are and whatthey are up to.

On 12th August between 6 and 9 p.m.there will be a ‘Party in the Park’ atBewdley Leisure Centre for all 10 to 19year olds.

On 19th August a similar event will be heldon the Memorial Park, Lickhill Rd,Stourport. These events have been run forthe past six summers and have increased inpopularity with over 2000 young peopleattending last year.

A variety of activities will take place, including fairground attractions, stormtroopers from the ‘dark side’ (notKidderminster, the other one), climbingwalls, street entertainers teaching circusskills, and W.F.C.H. NeighbourhoodWardens who have organised a Tug of Warcompetition.

Wyre Forest District Council’s ‘hot spot’team will be running a range of sportingevents and Youth Services are providingpractical activities such as nail art, hairbraiding, and henna tattooing.

There will be a number of educationaldemonstrations and displays including a‘healthy lifestyles’ tent with advice on safesex and the dangers of substance misuse.

The Co-op are bringing ‘Pete the Penguin’and ‘Healthy Hound ‘ to promote healthyfood options for young people. All theactivities, including hot food andrefreshments, are provided free, whichallows total inclusion for everyone, whatever their financial means.

The driving force behind every ‘Party in thePark’ is my highly regarded colleague PCJon Harris from Stourport. However hedoes not relish being in the limelight, so Ishall embarrass him no further.

This year’s events will run a themepromoting alternative activities for youngpeople. A large number of clubs andorganisations from across Wyre Foresthave been invited to showcase what theyhave to offer.

The hope is to encourage membership sothat young people will find somethingpositive to occupy themselves with insteadof hanging around bus stops and play areasto the annoyance of other people.

I am sure that there will be those who willgrumble that everything is provided for thekids and nothing for older people. Thesimple fact is that very few elderley peoplecause us any problems.

However if there is sufficient demand wecan organise something for you, but wouldyou really take advantage of climbing walls, henna tattoos and advice on safe sex? Ithink not.

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted.

We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-fairs were correct.

If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you freeof charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5TH JULY 2010Bewdley Car Parking Review

Councillors were pleased to note the recommendations of the District Council’s ParkingReview Panel and Scrutiny Committee which included allowing people with Residents’Parking Passes and Season Tickets to park for a maximum uninterrupted period of twomonths rather than 23 hours as at present and secondly, changing the pay and displaymachines to allow a “roll-over” of paid parking from one evening to the following morning soavoiding the need to move their car before 8.00am. It was hoped these proposals would beagreed and confirmed later by the full District Council

Policing of Public Events

The Council had been given notice by West Mercia Police that their policy of policing publicevents would be changing as from 2011 due to pressure on resources. Whilst the Policewould continue to provide support for Remembrance and St George’s Day parades andsupport community events where they had a stall or there was a risk of disorder, they werewithdrawing from traffic control or marshalling for purely local events such as the Carnival,Christmas Lights or Mayor’s Parade. The Council felt this was an unwelcome move and thata letter to the Chief Constable should be sent regretting such proposal and seeking a changeof mind.

Welch Gate Traffic & Air Pollution

What appeared to have been a useful meeting as between some residents in Welch Gate andthe County Council had taken place following the publication of a report by theirconsultants, Halcrow. They had produced some options including the introduction of trafficsignals or once again giving Welch Gate traffic priority at the junction with Dog Lane. However, none represented an easy solution with the clear risk that there could be knock-on problems for the rest of the town centre. The Council will ask for a presentation byHalcrow at a meeting to which the public would be invited

Blooming wonderfulChildren at Bewdley Primary School have been busypreparing for Bewdley in Bloom.

Each class has been busy planting flowers and vegetablesin their gardens. The main challenge was keepingeverything watered!

They children have set up vegetable patches with a veryspecial scarecrow and pretty flowers in the quiet area. They also have a beautiful court yard which the after

school gardening club have planted using some very unusual plantersincluding wellies, recycling boxes and shoes.

Amy Crowther, teacher said “the children have worked so hard, coming to school extra early in the morning to ensure all the plantsand vegetables are watered”.

Bewdley’s First Harvest Fair25/26 September 2010

On September 25th and 26th, Bewdley Museum and Bewdley Development Trust will bepresenting the first Harvest Fair for Bewdley.

The Fair is a brand new event designed to celebrate the very bestof the town and region’s food and drink offering along withdemonstrations of traditional arts and crafts. With much of theactivity based around Bewdley’s beautiful museum, visitors canexperience basket making, strawcraft, hobby horse making andmuch more. There will also be a focus on local produce andrecipes including rare breeds, fruit, preserves, pickles, cider and perry.

The Fair which will evoke some of the traditions of harvest time, is being held inassociation with the Grow With Wyre programme which aims to restore the naturallandscape in and around the forest. This includes re-planting orchards and hedgerows andincreasing production of fruits such as apples and cherries which have historically beenassociated with the area.

Young people from local schools will be getting involved too with the opportunity to takepart in dance and arts projects, and to learn more about farming and food productionwithin Wyre Forest.

Finally there are plans for a showpiece Coracle Race which will take place across theriver at Lax Lane. These traditional craft have long been associated with Bewdley and theRiver Severn and will provide a challenge to participants and great entertainment forspectators.

For more information about the event or to find out how to get involved, please contactRuth Finney at Bewdley Museum on 01299 403573, or Ellie Hooper at BewdleyDevelopment Trust on 01299 405516.
