Uniform Just a reminder that all students are expected to wear full school uniform at all times. Full school uniform includes black leather shoes for both Primary and Secondary students. On 'Sport' days Primary students are able to wear their sports uniform (with sneakers) all day and Secondary students are expected to change into their uniform prior to sport or PE. 100 Years of Education at Tooleybuc Next weekend we celebrate ‘A 100 Years of Education’ at Tooleybuc. It is an extremely exciting time for our school community with a huge number of people returning to our school to 're-live' their memories from the past. The NSW Minister for Education, Mr Adrian Picolli will also be attending our Official Opening Ceremony. We are hoping that all of our current school community members also come along to celebrate this huge event.
Just a reminder that we are asking current students to please wear school uniform so our guests can see what a wonderful student body we currently have. Fundraising Thank you to all of our families who have supported our fundraising efforts over the past few weeks. We have raised $116 the Leukemia Foundation with Funky Hair Day and $146 for the Good Friday Appeal with our casual dress days. Thank you for your support. NAPLAN Next week we are having NAPLAN Trials. The NAPLAN tests are for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The purpose of these trials is to expose students to the testing procedures prior to the actual test to minimise any anxiety children may experience from the unknown situation. If you do not want your child to participate in the NAPLAN tests please contact the school. Preliminary Examinations During Week 11 our Stage 6 students will undertake their Preliminary Examinations. Currently students should be revising their notes, completing past paper questions and seeking teacher support to prepare themselves to achieve their personal best. We wish them all the best.

Year Three/Four Karen Andrews (Class Teacher) This term Year 3/4 have been working very hard on our reading, writing and spelling. We try to include reading throughout the day, including our DEAR sessions (Drop Everything and Read) when the students can choose to read any book they are interested in.
Alex E, Rhys and Alex W reading
During reading groups, some of the students are working together in a Book Club. They are reading and discussing the same novel and helping each
other with any tricky words and answering comprehension questions together.
Alex E, Ashby, Kayla and Jayla enjoying their books.
Our weekly spelling activities include creating interesting sentences and using a dictionary to discover unknown meanings. We have been very busy working on structuring our writing into paragraphs using more sophisticated language such as similies, adjectives and adverbs.
Jett is pleased with his progress in spelling.
I am very proud of the progress all the students are making in English and I am looking forward to another great term of learning after the holidays.

Secondary News Sean Connell (Head Teacher) It was wonderful to see the support the students had in celebrating National Day Against Bullying and Harmony Day. The creation of Harmony Hands highlighting what Harmony means to each student, truly demonstrates how well the students embrace the school's culture of acceptance and learning. The barbecue raised over $250 to go toward the Year 7/8 school camp later this year.
Students placed their hands to celebrate National Day Against Bullying and Harmony Day.
Good luck to the Stage 6 students undertaking their Preliminary Examinations in Weeks 10 and 11. It's important that students seek out as much assistance as possible during this revision period and practice their time management skills in preparing for the upcoming examinations. Two hours may sound like a long period of time, however when sitting at that desk, it is remarkable how quickly it will pass. Essay writing is daunting at the best of times, and if you have spent all your time on short answer and multiple choice then you will loose valuable marks rushing an incomplete or sloppy response to the extended response sections. Use the five minutes reading time to plot out a rough response to any extended response questions and refer to the ALARM matrix to assist your responses to these questions.
Preliminary HSC 2016 Examination Timetable
All Preliminary Examinations run for 2 hours, with a
five minute reading time. Teachers allocated to a
Stage 6 class when an examination is timetabled will
be responsible for supervising an examination.

As we near the conclusion of Term 1, the Years 7-11 English classes will be involved in completing various Assessment Tasks. Year 7 - Boy...Tales of Childhood, by Roald Dahl Year 7 students are currently composing their own autobiographies after they studied the autobiography of Roald Dahl, “Boy – Tales of Childhood”. Year 8 - The Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson Students are nearing the conclusion of their study of “Bridge to Terabithia” which will provide a springboard into composing a speech, at the end of Term 1, and then writing an analytical essay, early in Term 2.
Years 9 & 10 – Came Back to Show You I Could Fly, by Robin Klein Our study of “Came Back to Show You I can Fly” culminated in two major pieces of work – a journalistic exploration of a chosen issue, which is due on March 31, and an analytical essay, which is due in Term 2.

Years 11/12 English Studies – Landscapes of the Mind Language must be used appropriately according to audience, purpose and context. Through the study of a selection of visual arts texts, as well as poetry and Australian music compositions students created a variety of texts demonstrating their proficiency in, and understanding of, written and spoken language related to the visual and performing arts.
Years 11/12 English Studies – Australian Family Life This term, students have also had the opportunity to experience, engage with and critique a range of literary texts, in both print and electronic forms, that explore the diverse nature of family lives in an imaginative way. They further developed their abilities to analyse how language is used to portray and explore ideas and issues such as the significance of relationships within and between families and the experiences of the individual within a family network. Students considered how texts represent a broad range of family structures and relationships in different ways and investigate how attitudes and individuals are depicted in these texts. At the conclusion of a film comparison study of “The Castle” and “Muriel’s Wedding”, which portray two very different types of Australian families, the students will present a speech on a character who enhanced positive family relationships or a character who destroyed family relationships, in the films studied.
Career News Kim Morton (Careers Adviser)
Work Placement: All of our Hospitality students had a very successful week working with local cafes and restaurants in Swan Hill. Well done girls you all received very positive reports and represented the school fabulously!

Students in Year 10 have an opportunity to apply to do Work Experience in Accountancy for the week of 10th May until 13th May. This is a wonderful opportunity with many past students enjoying the week and gaining a lot more knowledge about the profession.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN A NURSING AND/OR MIDWIFERY CAREER? Division 1 nursing involves a three-year degree at university while Division 2 requires an 18-month diploma. Some students who wish to study nursing also wish to study midwifery. This can either be done through a double degree in nursing and midwifery which will take 4 years or by studying nursing and then doing an 18-month course in midwifery. The double degree is offered at Deakin, La Trobe and Monash Universities. The good news for Year 12 students is that Victoria University (St Albans campus) is introducing this double degree in 2017. The aim is to address the challenges in maternity care. Increasing rates of
health conditions such as mental health disorders, diabetes and obesity have increased the complexity of care for women. NOTE: there are many other combinations of double degrees with nursing, providing more employment and interest options upon graduation. For example, ACU offers Nursing/Paramedics at the Ballarat campus and Deakin offers Nursing/Public Health and Health Promotion, Nursing/Psychological Science (and also a single degree called Nursing (Clinical Leadership)). CHECK OUT STUDYING SCIENCE AT RMIT – Deciding where to study after finishing school is a challenge...One way to find out more is to visit the university that interests you and see the facilities. RMIT is offering such an opportunity in the school holidays. Go behind the scenes on a tour of the facilities. Students and parents are invited to visit RMIT’s state-of-the-art learning laboratories and to find out about how RMIT degrees provide the knowledge and skills to tackle real-world problems and advance the way we live. Programs cover biology, biotechnology, chemistry, environmental science, food science, nanotechnology and physics. When: 11am-2pm, 30 March; Where: Building 3, Level 1, Applied Sciences Reception, RMIT City; Cost: Free; Booking and information: www.rmit.edu.au/events/all-events/tours/2016/ DO YOU WANT TO CHECK OUT WILLIAM ANGLISS INSTITUTE IN THE CITY? William Angliss is a provider of courses in hospitality, food, tourism and events. William Angliss is giving school students the chance to delve into the world of Tourism & Travel and Events in the school holidays. Tourism, Travel and Events – a hands-on introduction to the travel and tourism industry via an on-site amazing race-style activity. Students will then go to the new aeroplane interior demonstration area and be given a taster of what a career as a flight attendant could be. After a catered lunch, students will get the chance to jump into the world of Event Management with a table theming activity held in the Angliss Restaurant. When: 9.30am-2.30pm, Thurs 31 March; Where: 555 La Trobe St, Melbourne; Who: Students in Years 9-11; Cost: $120 (including lunch). REGISTER HERE! Enquiries: [email protected] GOOD NEWS FROM BOX HILL INSTITUTE - The good news is that Box Hill Institute has this year re-opened the former Swinburne (Lilydale) campus, providing tertiary education in this area once more. Institute also has plans to offer other programs and facilities on the Lilydale site. MONASH UNIVERSITY – Many of you will have heard the news that, after about 20 years in operation, Monash has confirmed that it intends to abandon its Berwick campus at the end of 2018. MORE SWINBURNE NEWS - In addition to items mentioned in last edition, Swinburne is proposing the following courses/changes for 2017 (some subject to academic approval):
Swinburne is considering an Early Entry Scheme (already offered by ACU and La Trobe universities). The ATAR would no longer be the sole determinant for entry.
Introduction of the Bachelor of Nursing (possibly at Wantirna)
Revised majors in sports science, nutrition and clinical technologies
Introduction of the Bachelor of Exercise Science
Introduction of a common first year for the Bachelor of Engineering, giving students a taste of the different fields in engineering before making a decision about their specialisation (similar to Monash University engineering)
Introducing a Masters in Occupational Therapy. More news on all of this when it becomes available from Swinburne.
Where can I use my ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE? Opportunities are increasing all the time with new technological developments, much more so than in civil engineering for example. Electrical engineering can be used in banking, the television industry, mining, automotive (e.g. driverless vehicles), marketing, solar cells, the health industry and in renewable energy to name a few.
ROBOTICS is another area of growth in engineering (e.g. drones, humanoid robots, Mars rover, robotic vacuums, etc.).

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS 2016 The New South Wales Government provides much of the necessary equipment and materials for the efficient running of the school.
