T he 10th Annual North Whidbey Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the Elks Lodge on Thursday, Nov. 24 from 11 am to 5 pm. This annual community dinner started when friends Keith Bartlett and Jack Stiltz wanted to provide an old fashioned Thanksgiving dinner for people. Three years before the rst dinner, Keith and Jack discussed the challenges, if they could get enough help and if people were interested. The response from that rst year was re- markable. Even though Keith is no longer with us, Jack and a host of key volunteers continue to provide what has become a yearly tra- dition for families and individuals in our community. The dinner serves more than 3,000 people every year. Local businesses and individuals are generous in donat- ing food, owers, and money to cover the costs of the meals. A team of about 20 to 30 cooks and food handlers start anywhere from 4 to 6 am preparing hams, turkeys, smokers and roasters for the day. Other volunteers serve, carve, cut, prepare, set-up and clean. Many hands make light work. No means of transportation? Volunteers are available to bring people to and from the dinner. Besides the meal at the Elks Lodge, a team of about a hundred volunteers deliver meals for those unable to attend due to sickness or disabilities. Meals are delivered to people working that day. No one should go without a Thanksgiving meal. Besides turkey and ham, there are a variety of appetiz- ers, traditional sides, beverages, and a dessert buffet not to be passed up. (Remember, there are no calories on holidays!). Everyone gets to enjoy a good, home-cooked meal. It’s wonderful to see the community come togeth- er and enjoy an old fashioned Thanksgiving with family and friends. The dinner is free and donations accepted. Everyone is welcome. The only thing we truly own is our attitude. Attitudes make or break you. A few years ago, a friend, Diane Olson, would encourage people to stop “Global Whinning”. Another friend, Berta Wallin, taught me the prayer, “Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder, and your hand across my mouth.” A trait both these friends and others have that I admire is what I call the “Gratitude Attitude.” We have been blessed with so much, even with challenges, we need to remem-

ber the little things that bring joy into our lives and always be thankful. One of my favorite early American folk heroes is Johnny Appleseed. I loved his song from the Disney cartoon, “Oh, the Lord’s been good to me.

And so I thank the Lord, For giving me the things I need, The sun, the rain and the appleseed. Oh, the Lord’s been good to me.”

So in the spirit of Johnny, here’s my gratitude list this Thanksgiving season:

I am thankful for smiles.I am thankful for life.I am thankful for family and

friends.I am thankful to be an American.I am thankful to be a Nana.I am thankful for volunteers.I am thankful to live on an island

even if it’s not in the Caribbean.I am thankful we didn’t get hit with

a Tsunami.I am thankful for thank-you’s.I am thankful for people with a

sense of humor.I am thankful for chocolate.I am thankful for friends with

chocolate.I am thankful for hugs.I am thankful I haven’t been

punched in the nose.I am thankful I haven’t punched

anyone in the nose-even when I wanted to.

I am thankful I’ve kept my big mouth shut and didn’t give my opin-ion.

I am thankful for friends who take me out to lunch.

I am thankful the fl u shot didn’t hurt. Not much anyway.

I am thankful for lemonade Crystal Light. It makes water taste good.

I am thankful for the offer of mousetraps if I ever go to Paradise Lodge at Mt. Rainier again to enjoy a little night life.

I am thankful for fl ashlights.I am glad I haven’t run out of gas.

(For the car.)I am grateful for the Dollar Store.

(Why did it take me so long to fi nd it???)

I am grateful I fi gured out how to download from I Tunes. (My husband isn’t.)

I am grateful I don’t have to worry each year about fi tting into a bikini. It would mean giving up chocolate.

I am grateful I’m beginning to look like a mature woman and not my son’s older sister.

I’m grateful I look younger than my three younger sisters. (I may get punched in the nose now.)

I am grateful for tomato basil soup.I am grateful mothers are still talk-

ing to me after I passed out “Bippity, Boppity Boo Fairy Godmother Dust” at Valerie’s Princess Party. (Gold glit-ter with the instructions to only be opened outside in the garden for the magic to work.)

Yes, the Lord’s been good to me.

NEWS FROM THE TOWER

By Ann Votava

CONNIE FERNANDEZA Ray of Sunshine

Connie Fernandez is a ray of sunshine in the dining department at Harbor Tower Village.

Connie was born in Bacolod, Philliphines. She moved to the state of Oregon in 1985. Then in 1988 she moved to Yokosuka, Japan for 15 years. In 2004, Connie and her husband, Roberto Fernandez, moved to Oak Harbor, Washington.

Of all the places Connie has lived– Oak Harbor is her favorite!! She enjoys the weather, the friendliness of the people, the quiet, and our environment. She has no plans of leaving her favorite spot.

When Connie is not working she enjoys camping, fi shing, crabbing, cooking and, of course, shopping!!

Connie’s favorite part of her job at Harbor Tower Village is the ability to serve and love such wonderful and friendly people. We are blessed to have Connie...

Please feel free to stop by and meet Connie. The fi rst ten people who visit Whidbey Coffee, located on State Highway 20 next to Wendy’s in Oak Harbor and mention Connie will receive a free latté. See you at Harbor Tower or Whidbey Coffee.
