Letter from the Chairman of the Board
Dear Donors and Members,It is indeed “viewers and listeners like you” that make the work that we do at WTTW/WFMT possible, and for that I extend a profound thank you. From the stories we tell via television, to live broadcasts on WFMT, to expanded coverage of issues impacting the Chicago region and our state on our websites, and myriad community events – we are where you are, when you want and need us, whether it be on television, on radio, online, and via your mobile device! Your support sends a clear message that public media is valued and needed now more than ever. I assure you that we have plans to be more vibrant, visible, and visionary in the coming year.
In addition to the thousands of individuals who support WTTW/WFMT, we are also grateful to the many civic leaders and organizations who have given us their vote of confidence and made it possible for us to complete another fiscal year with a balanced budget. I would be remiss if I did not recognize our generous and dedicated Board of Trustees, our Community Advisory Committee, and the senior management team and entire staff at WTTW and WFMT who continually make more happen with less. Together, as we honor our past, we are well positioned for an exciting future.
With sincere and enthusiastic appreciation,
Norman R. BobinsChairman of the BoardWindow to the World Communications, Inc.

Letter from the President and CEO
Dear Donors and Members,If you grew up watching public television as I did, Sunday nights meant Alistair Cooke and Masterpiece Theatre – Upstairs Downstairs, I Claudius, Mystery!, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Elizabeth R, The Jewel in the Crown, Brideshead Revisited, and many more.
So it was with great excitement – and more than a touch of nostalgia – that in a year when British programming on WTTW was more popular than ever before, we welcomed the star of Brideshead Revisited, Jeremy Irons, as host and emcee of our annual benefit. Those of you who were able to join us that evening will recall a wonderful event that incorporated the work of several renowned British performing artists and composers (including testimonials from luminaries here in America and “across the pond”), while also showcasing the talents of young local singing groups, dancers, and instrumentalists. That the event was also a great financial success was very gratifying to all of us – demonstrating that our generous supporters value what we offer more than ever.
Celebration 2012 was emblematic of the mission of WTTW and WFMT in a variety of ways – as was true of that event, we strive to provide our audience with the very best of fine arts programming, nurture and encourage developing young talent, and bring Chicago and the world together. And in addition to live events, we do this via our four distinct television channels, over the radio airwaves, via online streaming and social media, and through our content-packed and user-friendly websites, which offer many innovative options for enjoying, exploring, and extending the richness of our programming.
As always, we are deeply grateful for the support of our generous donors, underwriters, advertisers, and especially our tireless and dedicated Board of Trustees, without whom what we do would be impossible.
As Dame Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey’s Dowager Countess, said, “You’ll find there’s never a dull moment in this house.” That’s certainly how we in the WTTW/WFMT family feel on a daily basis. And we hope you do, too.

ExplorationWe explore new ideas and new worlds. We take you around the block and around the globe – exploring the history and architecture of our own hometown, the people and cultures of distant lands, the limitless reaches of space, and the wonders of the natural world. In two new documentaries, Geoffrey Baer introduced us to the controversial architect Michael Graves and took us on a new walking tour of Chicago’s Loop. The Grannies on Safari shared their quirky perspective on more far-flung destinations, and Rick Steves continued to make European travel enjoyable and accessible. And we got up close and personal with the great outdoors on Nature; delved into science, archeology, and astronomy on NOVA; and sailed into the wild blue yonder with intrepid P-51 Mustang pilots as The Horsemen Cometh.

Celebration – WTTWTHE BrITIsH ArE COMINg! The theme of 2012’s benefit highlighted the significant influence of British arts and culture on WTTW and WFMT programming, and was especially timely in the year of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 London Olympics. The evening included a special 60-minute onstage celebration at the Harris Theater, hosted by Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe-winning actor Jeremy Irons and featuring award-winning British actor Simon Callow, best known for his roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, A Room With a View, and Howards End, and for his recent one-man stage show Being Shakespeare at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Also appearing were Rory Hohenstein and Victoria Jaiani of The Joffrey Ballet, Fulcrum Point New Music Project Brass, Under the Streetlamp, and The Chicago Children’s Choir led by Josephine Lee, plus aerialist Danielle Ricciardi. The show, produced by WTTW’s Nicolette Ferri and WFMT’s Louise Frank, was attended by more than 1,000. Following a brief reception in the Harris Theater lobby, 530 VIP guests headed upstairs to an elegant dinner next door at the Millennium Park Rooftop Terrace, catered by George Jewell of Jewell Events Catering. Our guests enjoyed cocktails, a delicious plated dinner and a live auction.
Almost $1 million was raised; all proceeds supported quality programming on WTTW and 98.7WFMT.
The British Are Coming co-chairs were Renée and Lester Crown. Lead sponsor was BMO Harris Bank.

Celebration – WFMTWFMT’s 60TH ANNIvErsAry WFMT has come a very long way since 1951, when Bernard and Rita Jacobs pawned their car and luggage to buy a struggling Chicago radio station. More than 60 years later, after an unimaginable journey into the 21st century, their beloved WFMT has endured, grown, and prospered. In December 2011, the station celebrated its 60th anniversary on the air in style with a special Day of Music from Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center – an unforgettable all-day broadcast, free and open to the public. We were joined for the day by a rotating live audience of dedicated music fans while thousands listened in on their radios and via online streaming. WFMT’s on-air hosts welcomed a variety of artists, including soprano Nicole Cabell, tenor Rene Barbera, violinist Rachel Barton Pine, trumpeter/composer Orbert Davis, keyboardist David Schrader, the Avalon Quartet, the Lincoln Trio (premiering a world premiere composition by Stacy Garrop, created for the occasion), and many others who gathered to pay tribute to this cherished cultural institution.
We are grateful to BMO Harris Bank, who served as Lead Sponsor for this Day of Music. Major funding was provided by Illinois Tool Works Inc., Tiffany & Co., and Park Hyatt Chicago; generous support was also provided by The Crown Family; Andi and Jim Gordon, The Edgewater Funds; Joan W. Harris and the Irving Harris Foundation; Susan and Richard Kiphart; Alexandra and John Nichols; and Patrick and Shirley Ryan.
