any other in memory. The impact of COVID-19 on our communities has compelled journalists everywhere to examine how they report on local and national news, and the upcoming election. How do you plan to cover the conventions during the COVID-19 pandemic?

SARA JUST • PBS NEWSHOUR: We are constantly evaluating the risks of reporting in the field. As we consider each story on a case-by-case basis, we are considering the reporting that we can do remotely versus the reporting we can accomplish in person. No matter what we do, we are keeping the safety of our team in mind and minimizing the risk and potential exposure to as small a group as possible.

HUGO BALTA • CHICAGO TONIGHT: Given the continued uncertainty about the conventions themselves, we decided that we’re going to cover them from Chicago. We’ll be focusing on covering the conventions from the perspectives of different neighborhoods in Chicago, and then collaborate with PBS NewsHour on their national coverage. As we cover the events, we’ll be speaking about the platforms of the parties, beginning with the

While the COVID-19 pandemic has scrambled the plans for the Democratic and Republican Party conventions, both will still be held in some fashion at the end of August: the Democratic from August 17-20, the Republican from August 24-27. And WTTW News/Chicago Tonight and PBS NewsHour will provide in-depth coverage and analysis of each convention, as well as ongoing reporting as Election Day approaches. Sara Just, executive producer of PBS NewsHour, and Hugo Balta, news director for WTTW News, spoke with us about the conventions, the lessons they learned from covering the election four years ago, and the role of journalism right now.

country and telling the story but not under-standing the communities being covered. So a lesson learned was that WTTW News can’t tell this story from where we are headquar-tered on Chicago’s Northwest Side. In order to really understand the concerns, the needs, and the wants of the public in the Chicago region, we need to go to where people live. We need to spend time talking to them. We need to ensure that our coverage doesn’t presume that what the Republican Party and Democratic Party propose to the public has the same effect on someone who, for example, lives in Lakeview on the North Side as on someone who lives in Hyde Park on the South Side. In our effort to produce fair and accurate coverage as an independent news organization, we must cover the story from a foundation of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We do this by going to different neighborhoods to report on hyperlocal nu-ances and perspectives, and how differences among us impact voting decisions.

candidates and what they’re proposing, and going to the South Side, to the West Side, to the North Side. We will listen to the voice of the voters and find out what they think about what each candidate is presenting.

We will also do what we do best: analysis and in-depth conversations with experts, community leaders, and our local politicians about, ‘What do these proposals mean to residents in Chicago?’ And then unpacking further, ‘What does it mean to the commu-nities that live in the South Side versus the West Side and the North Side? And also, what does this mean to marginalized communi-ties like the Black community, the Hispanic community, and so on?’

The last presidential election led some journalists to reevaluate their practices. Are there lessons you learned then that you are applying to how you cover this election?

Just: In light of 2016, we are more committed than ever to speaking directly to voters, in as many parts of the country as possible, even as that is more challenging during the pandemic. Additionally, we are focused on evaluating and explaining polling data, which represents important insight but sometimes does not tell the whole story of the electorate.

Balta: I think one of the biggest criticisms of media four years ago was the practice of parachuting into different parts of the

What do you think the role of journalism is in covering this election while there are multiple crises facing our city and country that may divert the voters’ attention?

Just: Election Day is coming, no matter how many other stories vie for our attention between now and then. There are important choices for Americans to make, not only at the top of the ticket but all the way down the ballot in their communities. It is our job this year, like every year, to provide information and reporting about who is running, what they stand for and would do in office, efforts to influence the vote, and so much more.

Balta: In these unprecedented times of crisis, the public is looking to local, state, and national leaders to help them understand and navigate these frightening times. I think because we are in the middle of a pandemic, because we are still having conversations about systemic racism, and because of concerns about the economy, people will be making a decision about the next president based on what they’re experiencing now. So I think that this election is of heightened interest and importance to the community. I would say COVID-19 has certainly elevated this election year, as if we needed more visibility for an election.

The Midnight Special Welcomes Marilyn Rea BeyerEarlier this year before announcing his retirement, The Midnight Special host Rich Warren recruited his successor: broadcaster, educator, poet, and storyteller Marilyn Rea Beyer. Marilyn remembers listening to The Midnight Special while growing up in Chicago, and describes her route to her new position as “zig-zagged.” After stints as a radio news reporter and a drama teacher, she served as a host and then music director at an all-folk music public radio station in Boston. Welcome back to Chicago, Marilyn, and to WFMT’s Midnight Special! The series is preceded by Folkstage, which Rich will continue to host.

From the CSO’s Archives: Maestro’s ChoiceCurated by Riccardo Muti, these broadcasts delve into the Chicago Symphony’s rich archives to explore the orchestra’s past and present. The first program focuses on Fritz Reiner; from concerts of the 1950s and early 1960s, we hear him lead a performance with Yehudi Menuhin of Bartok’s Second Violin Concerto and a vivid interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. The second week is centered on the CSO Chorus, directed by Margaret Hillis and Duain Wolf; the featured works are Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Beethoven’s rarely heard Christ on the Mount of Olives. In the third program, Bernard Haitink conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, featuring an augmented orchestra that includes offstage bells and a hammer, plus extra woodwind and brass players. The program will open with a piece from the Grammy-winning CSO ReSound album Traditions and Transformations, featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble. The month concludes with Bruckner’s unfinished Symphony No. 9 under the direction of Riccardo Muti.

LA Opera on AirThis month, the Los Angeles Opera presents Bizet’s Carmen starring Ana María Martínez and Brandon Jovanovich, and Puccini’s La Bohème with Saimir Pirgu and Marina Costa-Jackson in the leading roles, plus Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (The Mercy of Titus). This was Mozart’s final opera - a stylistic throwback to the heyday of the Opera Seria. These were elaborately staged but somewhat static works that were notable for their florid, virtuosic, highly ornamented arias. Perhaps Mozart chose this archaic genre because Tito was intended for a ceremonial occasion: the 1791 coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia. In this production, tenor Russell Thomas performed the title role, with Elizabeth DeShong in the trousers role of Sesto.

Best of the Grant Park Music Festival: Grand FinaleTo mark the centennial of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution that guaranteed women the right to vote, the Grant Park Music Festival presents a program almost entirely devoted to women composers – the only exception being the Harlem Symphony composed by James P. Johnson and conducted by Marin Alsop. Also, Carlos Kalmar and Christopher Bell conduct the Grant Park Orchestra and its chorus in works by Stacy Garrop, Jennifer Higdon, Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Caroline Shaw, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. To close out the season, Kalmar leads the orchestra and chorus in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, from the 2019 festival. The soloists are two alumnae of Lyric’s Ryan Opera Center: soprano Amanda Majeski and mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio BroadcastsSir Andrew Davis, music director and principal conductor of Lyric Opera since 2000, is also active and in demand as a conductor of symphony orchestras, and not long ago he led the Chicago Symphony in a concert that featured his fellow Briton, pianist Paul Lewis, in two concertos by Beethoven. The program also included two works by Sir Michael Tippett (1905-1998), a British composer who’s not as well known. There are, however, Tippett-Chicago connections: Sir Georg Solti and the CSO gave the world-premiere performance of Tippett’s Symphony No. 4 in 1978, and a few seasons earlier, Northwestern University gave the U.S. premiere of his opera The Knot Garden. Sir Andrew chose Tippett’s Little Music for String Orchestra and his Praeludium for brass, bells, and percussion to contrast with Beethoven’s First and Fourth piano concertos.

The New York Philharmonic This WeekNew York Philharmonic music director Alan Gilbert leads a performance of the first Mahler symphony from a 2014 concert. After Mahler conducted the first performance of his Symphony No. 1 in Budapest in 1889, it underwent a number of revisions, reaching its final four-movement form in 1896; the original fifth movement, Blumine (Flowers), survives as a separate composition. The first and third movements quote from the composer’s earlier song-cycle, Songs of a Wayfarer, and the third movement begins with an eerie, minor-mode rendition of the folksong Frère Jacques, and the second movement commences with an Austrian dance called the Landler. The concert opens with the Finnish clarinetist Kari Kriikku playing the U.S. premiere of a concerto by Unsuk Chin.

Music of the Baroque EncoreChicago’s Music of the Baroque is planning a gala 50th anniversary season for 2020-21, including Bach’s St. Matthew Passion next March. To celebrate not only the anniversary but the organization itself, WFMT presents a weekly series of highlights from past MOB seasons. Led by the British conductor Jane Glover with Nicholas Kraemer as principal guest conductor, Music of the Baroque centers its repertory around the major choral and orchestral works of Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart, and generally performs in the Harris Theater and at Skokie’s North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. Music of the Baroque will select works from its most stellar programs for this radio series, to run into mid-October.

The Chicago Symphony and AidaA highlight of our summer-fall opera season is Verdi’s Aida, with the Chicago Symphony and its chorus led by Riccardo Muti, and a cast headed by soprano Krassimira Stoyanova in the title role and Francesco Meli as Radames. The performance, from June 2019, was the fourth concert presentation of a Verdi opera that Maestro Muti has undertaken as music director - the previous ones were Otello, Macbeth, and Falstaff. Mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili sings the role of Amneris, a princess who loves Radames, general of the Egyptian army, but Radames loves Aida, Amneris’ slave. Aida, however, is also a princess: daughter of the King of Ethiopia, a nation the Egyptians have defeated in war. The Ethiopian king is portrayed by baritone Kiril Manolov, while Eric Owens plays the King of Egypt and Ildar Abdrazakov is Ramfis, the Egyptian high priest.

The Royal Danish Opera: L’OrfeoL’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) is the earliest opera still performed today with some frequency. Monteverdi wrote it in 1607 for the wintertime Carnival season in the Italian city of Mantua. The story is the familiar mythological one of Orpheus and Eurydice, and moves between sunny landscapes to the darker confines of the Greek underworld. The composer called for strings and harps to accompany the earthly scenes and brass instruments for depicting the underworld. Orfeo is sung by French baritone Marc Mauillon, and the role of Eurydice, which would originally have been taken by a castrato, was portrayed by soprano Sofie Sund-Tonnesen. Lars Ulrik Mortensen conducts.
