The BRONC NEWSLETTER KERN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL FALL 2018 FALL 2018 Message from the Principal … John Meyers John Meyers Dear Bronc Family, Here at Kern Valley High School we are excited to part of a growing and changing campus. Our enrollment has increased to 481 students, up from a low of 424 in May of 2017. We are altering and changing programs to better serve our students by offering many courses for college credits, using technology in new and different ways and working on work-place skills in classrooms. Many classes require collaboration and presentations done with modern technology. Students are becoming more comfortable with public speaking, and defending or ‘selling’ their position. We are also excited to partner with the community in feeding every student, three times per day, for free! Due to new rules in our system, we can offer every Kern Valley student breakfast, lunch and an after-school snack, for free. Currently about 225 students are taking advantage of our breakfast program. It is our hope that this number will continue to increase. These programs are meant to provide a healthy choice for all kids. Please encourage your child to participate, after all… Free is Good! We believe every student does better with some solid nutrition. Our athletic programs will benefit from a partnership between the school and the Bronc Boosters. We are outfitting every athlete with new warm-ups for game days, new Nike backpacks with a padded compartment for a computer, the computers to take on the road trips, and a wi-fi signal on the school bus!! Hopefully we will look good, play well, and get some homework done on the trips. The Bronc Boosters have given $6,500 towards these goals. The Kern High School District has generously provided the remaining balance. Our school facilities are available for public use. We have to follow some guidelines, and pay our staff to open and clean the facilities, but they are available to use for youth groups, reunions and community gatherings. WE can seat over 400 in the auditorium. Please be sure to sign up with Maggie Rivera in the counseling office’s Parent Center for our notification system and Parent Vue . We use the notification 1

By Jessica Horacek / Pam Stieler Counselors During the first month of school, counselors met with seniors to review transcripts and class schedules to verify that students are on track for all desired post-secondary options. The counseling team visited

seniorclasses to alert the students to upcoming deadlines for college applications and college entrance tests and then provided a senior calendar for students in the class of 2019. The guidance counselors and Ms. Castillo CAL SOAP representative, have conducted a series of workshops to assist students applying to a California State University (CSU) or a University of California (UC) campus. The workshops helped students meet the November 30th deadline for 2019 fall admission. Students and parents seeking information on college entrance requirements, college applications processes, SAT I, SAT II and/or ACT testing can visit the parent center/counseling office or check the internet at the addresses listed below:

C.S.U. Homepage www.calstate.edu. C.S.U. Mentor www.csumentor.edu U.C. www.ucop.edu/pathways ACT www.act.org SAT www.collegeboard.org

On November 6th, the KVHS counselors held a financial aid workshop from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the KVHS library for those parents and students who are seeking assistance with the Federal and State (FAFSA) application for financial aid. We encourage all students who plan to attend a state, community or private college to fill out a FAFSA. Financial aid can be used towards technical trade schools as well as colleges. The deadline to file for the Fall of 2019 is March 2, 2019. If you missed the first workshop, please contact Jessica Horacek to set up an appointment for FASFA assistance.

Senior Scholarship Information Students will receive a resource guide from the Kern High School District that will assist students and their families in

career and college planning. Parents are encouraged to call our counseling office at 379-2611 to schedule an appointment. Check the Kern Valley website for additional high school and college resources. Local scholarship applications

Are you ready for college? Really ready? If you have taken the right courses in high school, you’re on the right track. Students who take the recommended core courses in high school are better prepared for college than those who don’t. ACT score results consistently show this. What are the minimum recommended core courses?

▪ four years of English ▪ three years of mathematics

(Algebra and higher) ▪ laboratory sciences (2 + years) ▪ social sciences (2 + years) ▪ language other than English (2 + years)

Enclosed are Kern Valley Courses that meet college admission “A to G” course requirements. Parents are encouraged to call for an appointment with their student’s counselor if they would like more information or e-mail to: [email protected] or

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (NCAA) STUDENT ATHLETES TIME TO REGISTER WITH NCAA If you are a junior or senior who is planning to participate in Division I or II sports as a college freshman, now is the time to register and be certified by the NCAA Initial – Eligibility Clearinghouse. You must do this in order to qualify for college athletics. Check out the Guide for the College-Bound Student Athlete (http://www.ncaa.org/eligibility/cbsa/). The website provides important information on eligibility standards, financial aid, recruiting and the national letter of intent, in addition to other topics of interest to student

athletes.

TESTING By Jessica Horacek Testing Coordinator

PSAT & ASVAB 10/10

The PSAT is a practice test for college-bound freshmen, sophomores and juniors which is administered at Kern Valley High School in the fall of each year. On the 10th of October, 40 KVHS juniors took the PSAT and in February, freshmen and sophomores will take the PSAT 9/10. Both of these tests give our students an opportunity to practice college admission test-taking strategies and to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses to prepare adequately for the SAT and the ACT. In addition, participation in these tests registers students to receive important information from colleges and

scholarship services. The cost for the PSAT this year is $15.00

SAT

On Saturday, March 09, 2019, students can ride in a KVHS van to take the SAT at Centennial High School in Bakersfield. This is especially recommended for juniors at Kern Valley High School. Sophomores and Juniors will be permitted to ride on a first come-first served basis and a permission slip is required. We will leave from Kern Valley High

School at 6:20 am on March 09th. Students should note that the spring test registration deadline is February 8, 2019. Students should register online as soon as possible at www.collegeboard.com. The deadline to sign up to ride with KVHS is Friday, February 23, 2019. See your counselor for more information. Fee waivers are available.

Pre-ACT Kern Valley High School administered the Pre-ACT test to 105 sophomores on Thursday, October 4th. This test provides yet another opportunity for students to experience taking a college entrance exam. The Pre-ACT is offered free of charge and will provide great insight on career interests and college readiness. The results will be available in late November, 2018.

ACT On Saturday, December 8, 2018, students can take the ACT at Kern Valley High School in the Fine Arts Building. Taking the test on our campus offers the students a tremendous advantage; they do not have to get up outrageously early to drive to test sites as far away as Bakersfield, Visalia, or even Riverside, and they are testing in familiar surroundings. Students should note that the spring test registration deadline is May 3, 2019. Students should register on-line as soon as possible at www.actstudent.org for the June 9, 2019 test at Kern Valley High School. Fee waivers are available. See your counselor for more information. A prep class may be offered from June 3rd to June 7th at KVHS. Stay Tuned! ACT Kern Valley High School Saturday, December 8, 2018

ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES By Brent Mixon Activities Director Upbeat and energetic, that’s how you would describe the start of the 2018-19 school year for the Kern Valley ASB. On August 10th, ASB officers met with the incoming freshman class and their parents. At that time the class of 2022 received

12

Page 13: The BRONC NEWSLETTER€¦ · The BRONC NEWSLETTER KERN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL FALL 2018 M e s s age fr om th e P r i n c i p al … John Meyers D ear Bronc Family, Here at Kern Valley

their schedules, learned their class yell and was then shown around campus by the ASB officers, link crew and cheerleaders Elected officers and members of the leadership class are taught responsibility and shown ways to give back to the community that has so graciously given to them. Since the first week of school the leadership class has participated in community service projects throughout the valley. Our students have volunteered at our local rodeos, the famous “Rubber Ducky” race, Kern Valley Pride Day, fall festivals and numerous other activities both here in the valley and away. August 27th was a big day for the freshmen class. It was time to see who wanted to run for the class offices for the class of 2022. Over a two-week period students received paper work, campaigned and then the big day came. At the end of the second week the freshmen class put their campaigning aside and the ballots were cast. By the days end the freshmen class had elected a group of 4 outstanding students that would lead them through their first year at Kern Valley.

Congratulations to: Class of 2022 Officers  Max Armes, President Nikki Brooks, Vice President Brooke Jeans, Secretary Karlee Roseberry, Treasurer

On August 22nd, we had our annual club rush day. This year we had great weather, and many clubs represented. Each club had a table set up at lunchtime in the quad so they could advertise their club for future members. It was a great turn out with many students signing up for the club or clubs of their choice. Later that same day we had Back-to-School Night. On this night parents are given an opportunity to visit their child’s classrooms and meet their teachers and to hear what their child would be learning. For September it was full steam ahead. We had our first food sale day. This food sale day was the first of four that we hold each year. This gives classes and clubs the opportunity to sale food items during lunch as a fundraiser for their group. It was also homecoming time. Homecoming week is a fun time for the students and community alike. Sept. 10th through the 14th was no exception. We had a full week of dress up days. The dress up days were centered on the theme “KV Game On”. Friday the 14th was highlighted with an exciting pep rally that Sadi Hartman and Helen Hayes worked hard to put together. As the week came to an end it was time to crown our homecoming court. The court consisted of freshmen prince Max Armes and princess River Sartor, sophomore prince Noah Alexander and Princess Hailey Martinez, junior prince Alexis Morales and princess Aryan Meyers. The senior princes were JJ Forbes, Tanner Tito and Jorge Lopez. The senior princesses were Helen Hayes, Arika D’Amico and Kassy Opferman. Homecoming Queen Helen Hayes Homecoming King Jorge Lopez

Once again, congratulations to all of our court!!

In October, KVHS hosted its annual Powder Puff football game. On October 19th, we held our annual Sadie Hawkins Dance in the Fine Arts Building. The dance was held by KVHS’ FCCLA chapter and was a great success. The theme of the dance was “Sadie Hawkins Galaxy”. October was the kick off and an eye opener for our seniors. This was the start of many activities that often makes them realize that graduation is not far off. On the 2nd, 3rd and 4th we had Ivy Lane Photography on campus taking senior photos. On November 7th and 8th Jostens was on campus to take cap and gown orders for graduating seniors and also took ring and letterman jacket orders. Kern Valley students are off to a great start. The entire student body is working hard to make this school year a great one….GO BRONCS!!!
