PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Members
A big thank you to all those involved in the organisation and the execution of the Patricia Cam Event. A great event with a turnout of more than 80 guests at the commemoration ceremony. Wonderful and positive comments were heard about the Ferry Tour and the beauty of the Brisbane Waters, the generosity of the Kincumber Rotary Club and the wonderful contribution our club has made to our local community honouring its heritage. I re-iterate many thanks and congratulations to Graeme and Peter fo a job well done. We were fortunate to have a number guests on Monday Night: Rotarian PHF Roy Chikwen from Nigeria, Neil and Bronwen Simpson (Kincumber) and Kathy Hay our guest speaker speaking on Maternity Africa and her links to Dr Andrew Browning and AG David Rivett. A great combination and a lot of fun. A reminder to register for the District Conference. See flyer later in the Bulletin. New Board members should reserve the date 29 April for District Assembly. Venue TBC but likely The Kings School Pennant Hills. PETS 23 Feb Macquarie Graduate School of Management TBC.
Proud grandfather Tim about to give his new grandson, Daniel Timothy Lennox, born Friday 19th January some advice about joining Rotary while Alison documents the occasion in film. Parents Brooke and Matt and big brother, Thomas have already heard about Rotary! Congratulations Tim and Alison.
I have heard from our outbound exchange student, Jordana Booth in Japan. She arrived safely – no problem with connecting flights. “I am settling in very well and am very happy! Language is okay and I can get by but I am studying everyday!” More news as it comes. Please be prepared to advise on Monday night if you and your partner are starters for our Community Service Awards night at Treetops on Mon Feb 19. Numbers need to be confirmed, shortly. Yours in Rotary Christine
LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY RALPH BROWN
Meeting commenced at 7pm with Sergeant Fraser calling for order and introduced President Christine to conduct the meeting. Christine welcomed club guest speaker, Kathy Hay, first time visitors, Neil and Bronwyn Simpson, visitor Roy Chikwen (Rotarian from Nigeria) and Assistant Governor, David Rivett. Apologies included PDG Graeme Davies and Peter Rea (at the Canberra War Memorial function for the 75th anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Patricia Cam), Lillias Bovell, Jan Brown, Tim Bowland and a number of members on extended leave. A toast was made to Rotary International and the Peoples of Australia. President Christine updated members on the negotiations with the Kincumber Hotel concerning meals, room and gear storage rental. The original deal was $120 pw with members ordering their own meals which would be delivered to the room but negotiated at $90 pw. This arrangement was temporary and a committee had been formed to review meeting arrangement options. Members were still requested to advise apologies to Lyn while Lillias was away until Feb, 2018. President Christine referred to the Saturday 20 January 2018 event at Palermo Reserve to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the HMAS Patricia Cam. She thanked all members for their efforts and congratulated Peter and Graeme on the wonderful organisation of this important event of the Shipbuilders’ Memorial Project. Advice was provided that the club meeting scheduled for Monday, 5th March would be transferred to Wednesday, 7th March, 2018 at Breakers club at Wamberal where Past Rotary International President, John Germ would be speaking. Speakers AG David Rivett advised that
278 registrations for the District 9685 conference in March 2018 had been received and encouraged members to attend. There were five registration so far from Kincumber.
It is easier for clubs to apply for Presidential Citations and David encouraged the club to apply. 23rd February is Rotary birthday and the club was encouraged to celebrate in some way
Several new cases of polio had been reported this year and a worker had been killed. These events were slowing the goal of eradiation of the disease.
PHF Roy Chikwen, Nigeria Roy spoke about his Rotary membership in Nigeria where his 28 member club in the suburbs of Lagos focussed on women’s issues including education opportunities and improved health services. He advised he had been a Rotarian for six years and was awarded a PHF. Rotary was considered a prestigious organisation in Nigeria. Roy had a background in banking and NGO administration including child protection before moving to Australia only three weeks ago with his wife and family. He lives in Gosford and works for Revenue NSW. Meals, which had been ordered by individuals at the Bistro arrived and the meeting business continued. The wine raffle (net $47 to TRF) was won by Rodney – a nice welcome back after holidays. H&T was won by first time visitor, Neil.
Fines, totalling $41.80, were made in a lively fashion by Fraser and members. John now has the title of “Tree Fella”; Ernie told a cricket joke that raised much laughter; Dave fined all non-colourful shirt wearers; and Fraser observed that there were more women than men at the meeting (10 to 9). Kathy Hay, our guest speaker, was introduced by Tina. These two women had heard about each other through their work in Africa dealing with women’s health and wellbeing activities conducted by Maternity Africa and Days for Girls International. Kathy is a midwife educator/practitioner on the Central Coast who spent three months recently as a volunteer in Tanzania assisting and training health workers in maternity care working at times with Dr Andrew Browning (honorary member of our club). The program titled, Maternity Africa, is making a real difference to the lives of women in Africa and their children. The conditions for birthing are primitive compared to western culture and very basic equipment is utilised – plastic gloves, string, razor blades and now thanks to the program “birthing kits”. No medication is given to women but there is a strong sense of family and support for mothers. There is a high death rate for mothers and babies in Africa and training programs to identify at risk women, particularly from obstructive birth, is a priority and one of the activities that Kathy was engaged in. Kathy spoke with compassion and used a PowerPoint presentation that demonstrated the mud hut village birthing centres. Kathy showed pictures of a new hospital that would be commissioned soon. Dr Browning has been a leading gynaecologist and obstetrician practitioner and leader in getting this facility built for local use. Kathy also confirmed that Andrew had recently returned to Australia to the Central Coast (Copacabana) after many years of work in African countries. Dave, in thanking Kathy for her presentation said that the work carried out in Africa was “Humanity in Motion” which is a feature of Rotary membership. He presented Kathy with a copy of the Rotary Down Under publication “Humanity in Motion” and members acknowledged Kathy’s talk. The meeting was closed at 8.35 pm Ralph Brown
