EXPRESSION YOURSELF!

OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

When Older Americans Month was established fifty six years ago

in 1963, there were only 17 million living Americans who had

reached their 65th birthday. Today that number is over 46 million.

Each year The Older Americans Administration creates a theme to

celebrate throughout the

month. This year it

is Connect, Create &

Contribute. Every day

here at The Fountains

there are various ways to

connect, create and

contribute, all while

staying engaged and

active in the community.

Attention all residents! Calling

all residents! “Expressions 2020

Calendar” is a chance to enter

your artwork in a competition to

represent The Fountains in the

Watermark Communities

calendar. This award winning

annual calendar features art by

residents of Watermark

communities nationwide.

Now is your chance to connect

with your “artist within” and

express your creative self! We

will be hosting an exhibit of

recently completed works in

June. So, listen up painters, woodworkers, knitters, crafters,

sculptors, quilters and other artists, let’s get creative together.

Please limit your entries to two works of art. Your work will be

exhibited in our Main Hall Gallery as well as the Card Room. See

Abbie or Joanne for more information.

LIVING WELL

In many ways, our memories shape who

we are. They make up our internal

biographies—the stories we tell

ourselves about what we've done with

our lives. They tell us who we've

touched during our lives, and who has

touched us. Our memories are an

integral part of who we are as human

beings. That means age-related memory

loss may represent a loss of self. It also

affects the practical side of life, like

getting around the neighborhood or

remembering how to contact a loved

one. It's not surprising that concerns

about declining thinking and memory

skills rank among the top fears we have

as we age.

What causes some people to lose their

memory while others stay sharp as a

tack? Genes do play a role, but so do

choices. Proven ways to protect memory

include following a healthy diet,

exercising regularly, not smoking, and

keeping blood pressure, cholesterol, and

blood sugar within the recommended

parameters. Living a mentally active life

is also important. Just as muscles grow

stronger with use, mental exercises help

to keep mental skills and memory in

“tone”.

The activities with the most impact on

memory are those that challenge you to

go beyond what is easy and comfortable.

Learning a new language, volunteering,

and other activities that engage your

brain are most effective and are offered

daily in our community.
