Hello, I would like to tell you something about me. As you know, I’m the ex-ecutive director at Beehive Science and Technology Academy. I have about 12 years of teaching experience in the sciences. I received my Bachelor degree from Bogazici University, which is one of the top uni-versities in Europe. I’ve worked not only in the United States, but also in five different countries around the world. During my teaching experience, I’ve served in many ca-pacities. I’ve taught chemistry, organized all kinds of after school and tutoring activities, organized and lead science fairs, field trips, as well as act as vice principal and principal. My main interest in teaching chemistry was to integrate the curriculum with technology. I applied this method to preparing Science Olympiad stu-dents. Happily, my students had won many awards in Azerbaijan. I re-ceived an award for my efforts personally by the president of Azerbaijan in 2000. After teaching high school chemistry in the public school sys-tem, I started a charter school in San Diego and was the acting principal. I enjoy many sports including table tennis, volleyball and ice skating, as well as getting to know new friends. My wife and I have two little boys. (The cutest in the world). —Mr. Frank

More on Henry Korous

Henry Korous will be honored by the Mayor of West Valley City! The Mayor of West Valley City wants to honor Henry on April 28th at the West Valley City Hall at 6:30p.m. for winning the Salt Lake Valley Spelling Bee. Channel 2 News conducted an interview with Henry and his mom Friday, April 3rd. You can view that online at Channel 2 News, search for Henry Korous. WOW! Imagine, winning a competition and all the glory that goes along with that. This is something Henry will remember for the rest of his life! This boy is going places... If any of you are will-ing and able to attend this event, our staff and his family we would love to see you at West Valley City Hall on the 28th. This is a very important accomplishment for Henry! Our hats are off to you, Henry!

On being an exchange student, it seems really hard to go overseas by ourselves, leaving our family for a year to live with a host family, which we’ve never met before, going to a new school and speaking an-other language. But, actually, being an exchange stu-dent is a great experience! I can improve my English, learn a lot of new things, make new friends, and of course, make my parents proud of me. It is the best thing! My mom and dad are really happy whenever I tell them of a new experience I’ve had during my ex-change year. It was really hard at school during the first three months. Especially in US History and Language Arts. There are a lot of new words and new ideas to learn. But luckily, as the time goes on, I enjoy all my classes in this school. I feel like I’m not a foreigner anymore. I am part of the US be-cause it feels like home! I love the quote, “I come as a strange and I live as a part of the family.”

SAVE THE PLANET

BSTA is now offering THE SAVE OUR PLANET CLUB! It is an environmental club in which students get to choose which projects and inventions they want to make or do to

help our planet. Maybe you want to make a solar power water distiller! Or maybe you care more about global warming! Our greatest goal is to convert a BW Bug into a solar powered

electric vehicle! If we have peaked your interest, put your name on the club list with Thomas in the office.

ATTENTION All Students- The Cell Phones For Soldiers drive has be-gun! Please bring in used cell phones so they can be recycled to earn money to buy calling cards for soldiers overseas. -Character Education

-Turkish

Character Education is a class where students are using their imagination to create ideas to share with other students and to have fun. For each character trait, students are working in teams where they learn team dynamics, create movies, stories, and posters. Equally important, are study skills, presentation skills, resumes preparation, and looking to students’ career future.

Turkish Class has been a lot of fun and gone very well this year. Students have had the opportunity to do a lot of fun and new things. One event of particular interest is the Turkish Olympiad we attended in Los Angeles. Students received second place! Often Turkish class is taken to Mr. & Mrs. Durmus's house where Turkish dishes are prepared and eaten. Yum! Also, Turkish class had the exceptional opportunity to at-tend the Turkish Festival held this year in Los Angeles. Sometimes, Turkish class even has sleepovers where the language is practiced and the culture is observed. Looking forwarding to next year, I hope to continue to teach my current students as well as new students.

Dear parents,

Time flies when you’re having fun…

We are near the end of our school year. I am so

excited and grateful to know that most of my

students think Math is their favorite subject.

CRTs will be held at the end of this month. I am

currently preparing my students to take this

test. I will review the year’s concepts we’ve

been working on in class during the upcoming

two weeks. Students need to complete their

worksheets one more time at home in order to

do well for this test.

Please encourage your student to not miss any

school during these two weeks. Also, it will be

so helpful to remind your student to study using

class notes every day.

Gratefully,

Mrs. Ho

April 21st 2009

Mr. Omer took high school students to visit three universities during Spring Break. They learned about campus life and academic programs from University of Nevada at Reno, Stanford Univer-sity, and UC Berkeley in San Francisco. They had a totally fun time.

Mr. Durmus and Mr. David took six students to see the wonders of Germany and Turkey. They visited many historic places, doing many exciting things, including ferrying across the Bosporus in Istanbul, rafting in Anta-lya, and seeing the first li-brary in Efesus. WOW! Any librarians out there? They visited an amusement park, Hollywood Safari Park, which displayed animals like lions and tigers in their natu-ral setting. Also at this park were all the rides you’d ex-pect of a great amusement park. Imagine, they were in two continents within 10 minutes while in the same country! Europe and Asia. “This trip was a great suc-cess,” says Mr. Durmus, “we are looking forward to it again next year.”

Mr. Steve and Mr. Aybek traveled to California with several students. They visited Universal Studios, Disney Land, Sony Pictures, and my favorite, Santa Monica’s beach! They played in the ocean and walked on the moon with Apollo 13! Spring Break offers students many different opportunities to travel far and near. Oftentimes, they see things they’ve never seen before, go to places they wouldn’t normally have a chance to see. Learning through all avenues, including first hand experiences is key during Spring Break. “We had remarkable days and we will remember those days with a smile on our faces in the future. Next year I am plan-ning to take more students to San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego during Spring Break,” says Mr. Steve.
