What is the California Lottery’s Consumer Protection Plan

The California Lottery is committed to ensuring

that all aspects of our games are conducted

in a secure manner with fairness and integrity.

To this end, the California Lottery has imple-

mented a set of initiatives designed to educate

our players on emerging scams and provide

awareness information to protect our players and

the integrity of every lottery ticket transaction.

Check It – There are many ways you

can check to see if your ticket won a prize.

Here are a few:

Check-A-Ticket – Many California

Lottery retailers are equipped with a

Check-A-Ticket terminal. These terminals

allow players to self-check their tickets

without any clerk involvement. To use a

Check-A-Ticket terminal, simply place

the barcode of your ticket under the red

light until you hear a beep. For draw game

tickets, this is the barcode on the bottom

of the ticket. For Scratchers® tickets,

this is the small barcode under the latex

covering on the front of the ticket.

Internet – To check your draw game

tickets over the Internet, please visit our

Web site at www.calottery.com. There

you will find all the current winning

numbers along with a collection of past

winning numbers of your favorite games.

Newspapers – Many local and national

newspapers print winning numbers

each day. For more information, contact

the newspaper in your area.

What is a scam?

Criminals design ways to take advantage of

unsuspecting people and ultimately cheat

them out of time, money and resources.

What kind of scams are there?

Scams evolve and change daily. However,

some of the typical scams involve face-to-

face communications, phone calls, e-mail

and postal mail. While scams vary in

complexity, typically you will be asked to

provide money or personal information in

order to receive lottery winnings. You can

find examples of common lottery scams

at www.calottery.com/consumeralert.

Buy It, Sign It & Check It

Buy It – Purchase lottery products only from

authorized California Lottery retailers. Never

purchase lottery products from somebody you

do not know, never purchase lottery tickets

over the Internet or through the mail and never

respond to an email asking you to provide

personal information before claiming a prize

for a lottery you did not participate in. For a

list of authorized California Lottery retailers,

please visit www.calottery.com/locations.

Sign It – Keep it simple. Print or legibly sign

your name on the back of your ticket. Do not

write anything on your ticket except your name,

address and telephone number in the space

provided on the back. If anything else is written

on the ticket, it could delay your prize payment.

How can I protect myself?

Trust your instincts and allow common

sense to prevail. Generally, if it sounds

too good to be true, it probably is.

Only purchase lottery products from

authorized California Lottery retailers.

When you purchase a California Lottery

product, immediately sign the ticket to

ensure ownership.

Never cash or claim a ticket for someone

you do not know. The California Lottery

only sells and redeems tickets through

its authorized retailers.

Never accept a collect phone call from

someone claiming to be a lottery

representative.

Never provide money, personal information

or credit information to anyone claiming to

be a lottery representative or representing

a foreign lottery.

If you believe you have been approached

regarding a potential lottery scam or would

like to verify information, please contact

your local law enforcement agency or the

California Lottery Law Enforcement Division

at 1-800-LOTTERY.
