Wellington
Two full buses of dancers left Canobolas High School bus bay at 7:30am on 5th August to
travel to the Wellington Eisteddfod. The school was represented by two Year 7 dance
troupes and Year 9 and Year 10 dance troupes. All the girls and boys were very excited, as
this was their first chance to take to the stage and demonstrate their dance routines.
Overall it was a successful day with Year 7 Sport A (gold pants) being awarded 1st place on
76 points and 7 Sport B (thriller) being awarded 2nd place on 74 points. The adjudicators
commented on their lovely costumes and sharp movement patterns. Year 9 took to the
stage and were awarded 1st place on 78 points and Year 10 awarded 3rd place on 75
points. The adjudicators were impressed with both dances and loved the cannon and
partner sections.
A big congratulations to the Year 9 dance troupe who also received the Best School Dance
Group from the whole day. Also thank you to Miss CJ for assisting with the make-up on the
bus and Mr Skein for some great photos of the groups whilst they were performing.
Orange
The Canobolas High School dance troupe attended the Orange Eisteddfod on Friday 16th
August. The four groups improved on their performance in Wellington and danced with
great enthusiasm. It was very tough as each group competed against one another.
7 Sport A took to the stage first and impressed the adjudicator and the crowd with their gold
pants and group work. They were award third position with 79 points. 7 Sport B where next
up and really got into character and the adjudicator commented on how well rehearsed
they were. The Thriller group was award HC on 78 points.
Year 10 were a little nervous as they knew they needed to improve from Wellington. They
stepped on stage and showed the audience and the adjudicator how well rehearsed they
were and performed extremely well. For their performance year 10 were awarded first place
with 80 points. The adjudicator commented on their energy on stage and cannons.
Year 9 were the final group after year 10 and they knew they needed to deliver a perfect
dance to beat year 10. They started well with the adjudicator commenting on their opening
routine and their formation, but year 10 proved too good for them, and Year 9 were
awarded second place on 80 points.
As you can see the competition was very close with one point in each position.
Congratulations to all the dancers, they danced outstanding and represented school well.
A massive thank you to Miss Kate Foran for her time and effort in creating the four fantastic
dance routines.
EISTEDDFODS
Dear Parents and Members of our School Community
Welcome to week 6. With only a month to go until the end of term, we are
working exceptionally hard to prepare Year 12 students for their HSC and Year 11
students for their Yearly Exams. It is a requirement of all Year 12 students that they
continue to attend school up until the end of this term. Students who miss school
without a valid explanation place themselves in jeopardy of not fulfilling
requirements for the HSC.
Last week we held our term 3 formal school assembly and I was extremely
impressed with the number of awards we were able to hand out for student
achievements. Awards were given for academic success, sporting success,
cultural opportunities, citizenship and leadership. It is always pleasing to see the
many wonderful programs which operate within our school and I am often
humbled by the number of students we have who represent our school with pride,
passion and determination in all that they do.
May I congratulate the leadership of Ms Lynch and the Home Economics staff
who once again prepared our Commercial Cookery and Food and Beverage
Hospitality students exceptionally well as they cooked for 90 people last Tuesday
evening with our restaurant Buon Ricordo. The food was spectacular as was the
service. If you get the opportunity to attend the term 4 restaurant, I would
encourage you to do so.
Also last week, our school captains attended a dinner hosted by Orange Rotary
and had the opportunity to speak to Rotarians about our school and their
leadership goals. Congratulations to our school captains and to Mr Williams for
the continued leadership in supporting our student leaders within the school.
Mr Hetherington, Mr Riles, Miss Kenneally, Mrs Burrell and Mr Williams recently
returned from the inaugural Year 7 peer support camp. The 55 Year 7 students
and 18 Year 10 students had a wonderful time at Lake Burrendong and
developed some close friendships over the three day camp. It is pleasing to see
our students involved in this type of educational opportunity and I encourage
other families to support the initiatives of our school when given the opportunity.
On Friday last week our dancers competed in the Orange Eisteddfod. Year 10
gained first place, Year 9 second place, Year 7 third place and our second Year 7
team was highly commended. This is an amazing result and one of which we are
very proud. Miss Rouse and Miss Kate Foran continue to bring the best out of our
dance students and I am looking forward to our new dedicated dance learning
centre space being constructed to further provide the necessary resources to
improve our results in dance across the school.
From the
Principal’s Desk
Congratulations must go to our musical ensemble who were placed second by 1
point at the Wellington Eisteddfod last week. Miss Aldrick was very pleased with our
performance and it is great to see our musicians achieving some well-deserved
success.
This week 21 of our students along with Mr Skein and Miss Rouse have travelled to
Perisher for a ski trip. With the forecast of plenty of snow and all lifts open, I am sure
the students and staff will have a great time. I am looking forward to seeing some
photos and reading a report on the ski trip in our next newsletter.
Once again, may I remind all of our families that students are expected to be in full
school uniform at all times and that school starts at 9.00am each day. Students
need to be at school before this time and doing their personal best in every lesson
every day.
I look forward to speaking with you in two weeks’ time.
With my warmest regards
Chad Bliss
Principal
During Terms 3 and 4 we will be updating our medical records
systems to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on
your child’s health.
If you have a child with a medical condition you will receive a
copy of the new forms in the mail and will need to fill them out
and return them to us as soon as you can.
The good news is we have already started collecting some of this
information, which means less for you to do.
The new forms will help us collect your child’s important medical
information and the introduction of new systems will mean we'll
be able to better manage the daily and emergency health
needs of your child.
We appreciate your support as we start collecting the
Information, and if you have any questions please call.
Student Medical Form
On the 7th, 8th and 9th of August Year 7 went to Lake Burrendong Sport and
Recreation Camp accompanied by Year 10 Peer Support leaders and 5 members
of staff.
Despite the second day being one of the coldest in memory at Burrendong,
everyone had a great time taking part in activities such as Canoeing, Archery,
Low Ropes, Rock Climbing, Grass Skiing and Initiatives. During free time the
students could also take part in tennis, volley ball, table tennis and chess, all of
which proved to be very popular.
At night students and teachers took part in Indoor Games and Mini Olympics, both
of which were lots of fun and managed to tire the kids out a little bit, although not
enough to go to sleep immediately!
Some more memorable moments were Mr. Williams having a super stack when
grass skiing and Mr. Riles taking literally the “no rules” applied during the grass
skiing race. Let’s just say he finished first after some dubious tactics! Then there
were the kids having a great time rolling down the hill undeterred by the little
messages left by the kangaroos. Also notable were several boys who unfortunately
parted company with their dinner during the later hours of the evening!
One of the best activities for 100% participation and effort had to be the Paint
Ball/Water Bomb afternoon. Teachers and students all entered this contest with
great enthusiasm and many paybacks took place. The best part was when all
students lined up with their backs to the staff who then had a bucket of paint balls
to direct where they wished!
For many of the students, camp provided opportunities and challenges which
were new to them. These included being away from home, working in groups,
leading activities and trying challenging activities e.g. paddling a canoe, grass
skiing downhill or climbing up a rock face. During all of these activities and
challenges, the Year 10 students proved to be a wonderful group who didn’t
hesitate to step in and help show the way.
The students also had to take turns helping in the kitchen. This included serving out
meals and cleaning up afterwards. All of them were very happy to take part in this
and they did a great job.
It was a wonderful camp. Thank you to the Year 7 students for their good
behaviour and excellent attitude. Thank you to the Year 10 leaders who showed
maturity, initiative and did Canobolas High School proud.
The staff, Mr. Riles, Mr. Hetherington, Ms. Kenneally , Mr. Williams and Ms. Burrell had
a great time and were impressed by the students, both young and old. It was a
pleasure to take you away.
