MESSAGE FROM THE FIRESIDERSWelcome To Live Oak Camp

Another year has come to an end as we are here at one of the Laze Dazer’s favorite campgrounds. The Firesider’s hosted and provided the coffee at Butterfield Ranch Resort, another favorite campground. This worked out great for the caravan and us.

We began to arrive Monday, couple days early to ensure we had every thing ready by Wednesday for the October freaky Friday event. Good thing we did as Tuesday was a rainy day. By Wednesday 53 Carriages had arrived with a good number of Ghosts and Goblins from the past. On a windy and rainy Wednesday, more Carriages arrived. All the games and fun began with an Evening Movie, Laze Dazy Yard sale, Bingo, and Pot of Gold.

Then came Freaky Friday. But where was Lurlie the director for all the Pumpkin Carving information, Pool area set up, direction, Etc. At last word came she was on her way; seems she had a BIG Tire problem on her carriage. She arrived only to find out we had been without electrical power and water since 2:30 AM. Lurlie got to work with many helpers and had the pool area ready for all the ghosts and goblins, decorated and carved pumpkins. Only thing everyone was waiting on was electricity and water. SDGE got us back on line by 7 PM and the Yearly Halloween Festivities began. From what we observed it was a huge success as always. A good time was had by one and all…. Thanks Lurlie.

Saturday arrived windy but no rain, but we had a “BLAST FROM THE PAST” and we had 68 carriages including (1) First timer. The general meeting was held with lots of pot of gold winners. Also the Pumpkin winners were awarded their 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place ribbons along with some pot of gold tickets. Some ghosts and Goblins departed and some stayed over for Sunday services.

DEATH VALLEY DESPERADOES GOING FOR #14

The Lazy Daze group known as the “Death Valley Desperadoes” is again planning to be in Death Valley National Park for our 14th New Years get together. Please consider this your personal invitation to join us for a safe and fun New Year’s party.

For your information the group started with four rigs in 1997 and has grown through the years. We meet at Sunset Campground right after Christmas, except for those already there, and stay to ring in the New Year. Anyone is welcome to come and join. The only thing we ask of you is to have FUN and a relaxing time! You can make your own plans or join in with a spur of the moment outing, hiking, 4-wheeling, photo shoots, exploring the valley’s wonders, playing games, visiting with new friends, or just sit and watch the sand grow.

Each night we share in a massive array of hors d’oeuvres that everyone brings and on one night we have soup potluck that would put any chef to shame and another night we cook hamburgers. Also, there are other meals planned, plus one morning we will have another fantastic breakfast prepared by everyone and sharing. One thing for sure, you won’t go hungry and you won’t lack for a good time. New Year’s Eve is when we really bring out the food; last year we had about twenty feet of tables filled with enough food to feed the entire campground. Everyone brings their own beverage, be it hard or soft and if you would like, bring a bottle of champagne to share New Years Eve.

To obtain an agenda of what will be happening please come to the meeting listed in the daily activity sheet. If you need to leave before the scheduled meeting please see Frances Smith, #2206.

A HUGE “Thank You” to all. We wish everyone could see the faces of the officers we deliver these precious critters to, as they are always beaming and grateful. The list should also include the many, many officers we have dealt with over these past nine years. Very special public servants who have a very difficult job to do, every day.

Goodwill Ambassador Report

Did you all miss me while I was gone? Well I’m back after a 7,800 mile trip east. We saw a lot of pretty country, but I’m sure glad we live in Southern Califor-nia. Some of the news here is a little late getting mentioned, but I feel it should be noted for those who might have missed it.

Two of our members have lost their mothers recently; Backscratcher, JOHN CAIRES #2851 and Firesider, LINDA GENESER #2745. Her mother was NADINE SALADINO #600.

Outback, BELVA LINDBLAD #1230 died after long battle with cancer last June. Another long time member, Lazy Gourmet, AVESTA KELLER #1577 past in early October.

Outback, LURLIE EDGECOMB #2285 lost her son in August from some major health issues.

Roadrunner, JESSE HONEYWELL #2245 had to redo a skin graft on his scalp, a result of melanoma. This should be a reminder for everyone to remember their sun block and hats.

In late July, At Large, DI FILLER #2783 had surgery for endometrial cancer at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix.

Here we are at the end of another year. We will have a meeting on Friday at 2:00 PM in the “back room” of the Pavilion. Bring your chair and maybe a pen and paper in case you want to write down something of interest. This will be mostly for fun,a light, cheerful meeting in keeping with the holidays. Please plan to come if you never have and see what happens with all of these interesting and fun people. For those of you who are “regulars”, I look forward to seeing your smiling faces once again.

And to all A Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year!!!

Mother Nature had several tire problems and only arrived mid-day Friday. En route, at Sunshine Summit, she espied a large flock of wild turkeys, enough to have made the Pilgrims happy. They were doing the chicken-scratch thing searching for food beneath the oak trees.

With the strong winds Friday and Saturday afternoons, smaller birds seemed to be staying put....somewhere. Saturday evening 3 hen turkeys visited the pool area by the Clubhouse and then took flight to the top of the power pole. All the better to stay safe from the coyotes at night. The four-legged, stealthy hunters were heard nightly. The trees in the park do not offer much safety--no thick, high branches, so the turkeys have adapted. Good for them. You may get to see some at Live Oak where they do have nice oak trees to roost in. Be sure to look early and late near the corral area and at the base of the hill.

Halloween 2010 was a spooky, but friendly, moonlit night at Butterfield Village. Freaky Friday Frolics had a double pumpkin contest --Carved with 6 entries and Decorated with 5. Around all this activity, dozens of spooky, costumed creatures slithered and cantered about while 94 of them voted for their pumpkins of choice.

First Place for ornate carving went to Linda Geneser #2745.Second Place ribbon went to Shirley Winslow #2796Third Place was won by Jan Ludolph #2095 A close fourth place or Honorable Mention was awarded to Velna Wells #2638Decorated pumpkins were interesting:A ghoulish First Place went to Donna Laporte #2711Second Place ribbon went to Bill Surbrook #1972 andThird Place went to his wife, Frances, also in rig #1972.The other contestants were Louise Parth, Jan Hawken,

Claude and Carol Potts. Willing pumpkin lovers make this party possible each year. Though available, the floating apples bobbed by themselves in the cool evening. A soaked head and shirt would not have been worth capturing an apple.

A lot of helpful hands put up and took down the decorations. Thanks to all who turned out and made it all possible. The Webb’s mummy stood guard duty at the pool gate. He kept an eye on all and no one ended up in the pool. We have a perfect record (Rosemary W. did go in fully clothed one warm year, but she didn’t fall in!). The ‘”dirty” old man with mirror did not show up this time; never did figure him out. Millie Reiner and Joanne and Bob Wayne helped with the ballots and candy distribution. The accounting firm of Reiner and Edgecomb tallied the ballots.

Until next year, Lurlie Edgecomb #2285

Terry’s Tech TalkTech Talk Article 54 LED Modification of a Fluorescent Light Fixture 12/2010

The two photographs below show the replacement of the fluorescent tubes in a 1980’s “vintage” Lazy Daze fixture (1.9 Amps) with two Maxxima M84403 6 LED Cargo Lamps. This setup draws 1.68 Amps and outputs 680 Lumens. The existing On/Off switch in the old surface mount fixture is used. The rivets holding the old circuit board are drilled out and four holes to receive the machine screws holding the two Cargo Lights are drilled in the bottom of the old fixture.

Terry Tanner Rig #2779

The photograph below shows a Maxxima M844280 9 LED Cargo Lamp installed alongside a “modern” Lazy Daze fluorescent fixture. The M844280 draws 1.15 Amps and outputs 500 Lumens. A 12 volt round rocker switch was installed in the cabinet bottom next to the old fixture. The Cargo Lamp was installed over the kitchen sink.

Each M84403 costs $52.79 for a total of $105.58 plus tax.

The M844280 cost $63.63 plus tax and the rocker switch was about $3.

HEALTH AND SAFETY TEAMIn March, I said I would volunteer to lead the Safety

Team, then I disappeared taking many trips here and there. Now, Bob and I are back and ready to get things going again.

At our Live Oak outing there will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board for those who would like to be on the Team (old and new) . We need many volunteers to cover each outing in case of absence for some reason. We do need a few fireman and first-aiders if possible, but knowledge in fire and first aid is not imperative, so please sign up. A roster will be posted on the bulletin board each month that will be initialed by the team members as they come in, so other team members and host tent volunteers will know who to call in case of an incident needing help.

Please check your schedule to see if there was space for the Safety Team meeting. We need to discuss how we can best serve our Caravan Club outings.

COME BE A PART OF THE TEAM.FIRST-AID KITThe first-aid kit was recently updated for next year.

It will be placed at the host tent every month. When the host tent is taken down, the first aid kit will be in the Wayne’s rig #2236 in the Outback area.

HEALTH TIP:Immunizations are very necessary for adults also, not just children.

Tetanus-every 10 years ( dog bites and lacerations may require another depending on when your last booster was)

Pneumoccal (pneumonia ) a booster is now recommended according to my doctor.Shingles (over 60)Influenza (flu) booster needed annually (H1N1 included in current vaccine)Tdap - (tetanus diphtheria, and whooping cough) if a tetanus booster is needed, get a Tdap followed by

a Td booster in 10 years. In 2006 the Tdap vaccine was licensed as an improved version of the typical tetanus booster,Td. The newer version contains a component to protect against pertussis (whooping cough). Adults who are going to be around young infants should get the Tdap vaccine to decrease their chance of passing petussis to infants, whom it can be fatal.

Check with your doctor to see what he recommends for you.
