ForewordAs of 10 October 2010, Statistics

Netherlands is responsible for the

production and publication of statistics

for the Caribbean Netherlands: Bonaire,

St Eustatius and Saba. The Caribbean

Netherlands in figures 2013 gives a

statistical overview of the Caribbean

Netherlands. It presents figures on some

important aspects of society on the

islands and gives a brief impression of

areas such as population, education,

justice and security, prices and many

more. In addition to previously

published figures, the new figures from

the Omnibus survey are included. All

statistics can be found on statline.cbs.nl,

Statistics Netherlands’ online database.

IntroductionSince Statistics Netherlands started

collecting statistical information about

the islands of the Caribbean

Netherlands, four years ago, a lot has

been accomplished. Compared with

earlier editions of this brochure in 2012

and 2013, this edition encompasses

many more subjects, expanding the

48 pages of the previous edition to more

than 100 pages in this one. The main

cause of the increased amount of

available data is that new surveys have

been carried out on the islands, such as

the 2012 Caribbean Netherlands Labour

Force Survey (LFS). The LFS resulted in

information on the labour market,

employment per sector of industry and

unemployment. The 2013 Budget Survey

aimed to get an insight into how

households on the islands spend their

money and thus adjust the calculation

method for the consumer price index

accordingly. In addition, the 2013

Omnibus Survey was held on all three

islands. This survey comprised various

themes, such as health and welfare,

security, transport, and leisure. The 2014

brochure also includes data on other

areas, such as incoming tourists via

airports, international trade and gross

domestic product (GDP) for Bonaire.

1. BonaireBonaire is one of the so-called ABC

islands of the Lesser Antilles. Some

18.5 thousand people live on the island,

of whom 80 percent have the Dutch

nationality. Most inhabitants –

– 58 percent – were born on one of the

islands making up the former

Netherlands Antilles or Aruba.

Papiamento is the main language of

64 percent of the population; 15 percent

speak mainly Dutch, another 15 percent

Spanish, and 4 percent English.
