Flu season is upon us and one shot could save you two weeks of suffering, says the Centers for DiseaseControl (CDC).

This is recommended for everyone over the age of six months, except for those who may be adverselyaffected because of a weakened immune systems.

There are a variety of vaccine options available to help individuals avoid the virus, or to lessen its impact, and they come in multiple forms - typically a shot, or a nasal spray.

This year, the CDC says that the nasal spray vaccine should not be used during the 2016-2017 flu season.

The CDC recommends the inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) or the recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV).There are vaccines with three components (a trivalent shot) or four components (a quadrivalent shot). No matter which you choose, it usually takes about two weeks for the vaccination to fully take effect.

If you're interested in getting a flu shot, there are a variety of places where you can go to get thatvaccination, including your doctor's office. A local health clinic, a pharmacy or even a drive-through flushot clinic, if you can find one, are all places where you can get a flu shot.

If you're going to get a flu shot, now is the time to do it - too early and you may suffer later on, fromwaning immunity around the time that flu peaks next January or February.

No Flu for You!

Christmas in the US officially begins Nov. 30 when the 45,000 energy-saving LED lights on theRockefeller Center Christmas tree burst into a dazzling display. The American event began in 1951when only 9 percent of Americans owned a television. By the end of the decade 90 percent ofAmericans owned a television and the New York City Christmas celebration became a holiday tradition.

When NBC broadcasts the one-hour tree-lighting special every year, the cameras emphasize the tree, ice skating rink, and surrounding magical decorations. They don’t reveal the marvel of the Centeritself.

Rockefeller Center itself is a complex of 19 commercial buildings, themselves icons soaring up onlegendary streets with names such as Avenue of the Americas and Fifth Avenue, and 30 RockefellerPlaza, headquarters of NBC. The buildings take up 22 acres in Midtown Manhattan and they werepart of the largest private building project of all times, a project of glamor wrought in gloomy times.

In 1928, John D. Rockefeller Jr., had already leased land from Columbia University to build a newfacility for the Metropolitan Opera when the stock market crashed in 1929. With a global depressionunderway, the Opera board backed out of its commitment. Other financing fell through. Rockefellerknew if the Art Deco 'city within a city' would be built, he would have to finance it himself.

And he did. Although Rockefeller suffered losses himself on Black Tuesday, he pressed ahead withthe project that became a symbol of success and hope for the future, a public space where New Yorkerscould appreciate art, and a commercial boon for the city.R

A Poem Shared By Helen AugustI CANNOT but rememberWhen the year grows old— October—November—How she disliked the cold! She used to watch the swallowsGo down across the sky, And turn from the windowWith a little sharp sigh. And often when the brown leavesWere brittle on the ground, And the wind in the chimney Made a melancholy sound. She had a look about her That I wish I could forget—The look of a scared thingSitting in a net! Oh, beautiful at nightfallThe soft spitting snow! And beautiful the bare boughsRubbing to and fro!But the roaring of the fire, And the warmth of fur,And the boiling of the kettle Were beautiful to her! I cannot butremember When the year grows old— October—November—How she disliked the cold

A Message From YourResident Chairman

Thank you all for your comments duringour monthly meetings. There seems tobe a strong feeling of comradely, evenfamily between us. The American writerRichard Bach once wrote "The bondthat links your true family is not one ofblood but of respect and joy in eachother's life." I believe this family-likebond is becoming more and moreprevalent throughout our community.

Each of the puzzles below provides a visual representation of a commonword or phrase. Can you decipher the clues in each puzzle box?

My name is Robert McManus, and I was born in TorontoCanada on April 6, 1929. I served in the Canadian Navyas a radar technician, I also was a Navy photographer. Iwas a photographer for many years for the VancouverHarold newspaper, and the Vancouver Sun. I met my wifeShirley at a super club, she asked me to take her pictureand two months later we were married. We moved toCalifornia in 1961 and adopted our son Robert Jr. Who isnow the Lieutenant of the city of San Leandro. The mostexciting thing that happened in my life was attending the35th birthday of Sugar Ray Robinson, it was unforgetta-ble. I enjoy reading the newspaper, visiting with my wife, and spending time with my Son. My words of wisdom areto stay young and do that by being happy, and neverforget to love your wife.

At the age of 97 years, is one of the world's longest-serving physiciansand•educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St.Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke's College of Nursing.

After World War II, he envisioned a world-class hospital and college springing from the ruins ofTokyo; thanks to his pioneering spirit and business savvy, the doctor turned these institutions intothe nation's top medical facility and nursing school. •Today he serves as chairman of the board oftrustees at both organizations. Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 bookssince his 75th birthday, including one " "” that has sold more than 1.2million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live along and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself. Here are someof his views to ponder:

. We all remember howas children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep thatattitude as adults, too. It's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime andbedtime.

.•For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoonof olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and afew cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work.Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.

My schedule book is already full, with lectures and my usual hospital work.

. The currentretirement age was set at 65, half a century ago, when the average life-expectancy in Japan was 68years and only 125 Japanese were over 100 years old. Today, Japanese women live to be around 86and men 80, and we have 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will have about 50,000people over the age of 100.

I give 150 lectures a year, some for 100 elementary-school children, othersfor 4,500 business people. I usually speak for 60 to 90 minutes, standing, to stay strong.

When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, askwhether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure.Contrary to popular belief, doctors can’t cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery?I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine.

. If a child has a toothache, and youstart playing a game together, he or she immediately •forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to thebasic need of patients: We all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art classes.

.
